Years ago I worked in a call center, selling computers to corporate accounts. It was stressful more often than it was not. One day I found myself having a particularly difficult afternoon. I leaned back in my chair to rub my own scalp and found a bump. I had a friend come over to see what it was. It turned out to be an engorged deer tick. I knew tick removal could be tricky, because if you don’t do it correctly you don’t get the whole tick out. My friend lived on a farm in the woods, where she had gotten some experience dealing with ticks as it was a horse farm with deer in the area and because she had a dog. She removed the tick for me. When I started not feeling well a while later one of the first things the doctor and I discussed was that tick byte.

Ticks can cause many diseases and illnesses, both to humans and to pets. Our pets cannot check themselves though, so they must rely on us to check them regularly. At the beginning of summer we were outside with Dobby and noticed a tick had gotten onto his fur. Fortunately Dobby has light-colored fur, and we saw the tick before it ever had a chance to get to the skin and feed. This is why it’s so important that we check out dogs carefully after each and every time they go outside. Whether they’re just outside for 1 minute to go to the bathroom or 30 to play, our dogs are at risk to be exposed to ticks and the diseases they bring with them.

To check your dog for ticks, part the dogs’ hair and ruff up his/her coat. Carefully look for ticks through the whole coat, remembering to check in the ears and between the paw pads as well. (More info on checking for ticks can be found at If you find a tick, it’s a good idea to consult your veterinarian for advice on how to remove it from your dog if you aren’t completely certain.

Along with checking our dogs for ticks, we need to give them protection. BRAVECTO® (Fluralaner) is a relatively new product in chew form that provides protection from fleas and ticks for up to 12 weeks*. BRAVECTO kills fleas, prevents flea infestations, and kills ticks (black-legged tick, American dog tick, and brown dog tick) for 12 weeks*. BRAVECTO also kills lone star ticks for 8 weeks.

(For full prescribing information go to There you will also find the following important safety information: The most common adverse reactions recorded in clinical trials were vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, polydipsia, and flatulence. BRAVECTO has not been shown to be effective for 12-weeks’ duration in puppies less than 6 months of age. BRAVECTO is not effective against lone star ticks beyond 8 weeks after dosing.)

FDA approved BRAVECTO is prescribed by a based on the weight and age of your dog. It is super easy to administer, all you need to do is feed your dog one chew. This simple dosage means less for you to have to remember to do and longer protection for your dog. In fact, BRAVECTO’s 12 week protection is nearly three times longer than a monthly treatment. I should note that BRAVECTO is approved only for dogs 6 months or older, because puppies under 6 months of age grows rapidly and their weights change too much over the 12-week treatment period.

As summer heat changes to the cooler weather of fall this month, some species of ticks thrive. Now is a very good time for you to schedule a visit with your veterinarian, to discuss which tick and product is best for your pet. BRAVECTO is only available from your veterinarian or veterinary clinic, so it makes sense to discuss this convenient solution while you are there. If you need to find a vet, use the vet locator to find the vet nearest you.
