Spring is arriving and you’ve probably been contemplating spring cleaning. After all, spring cleaning can leave you feeling like you’re living in a completely different home. Spring cleaning isn’t just for your living space, though. Your garage can also benefit from a deep-cleaning and decluttering each year. Here are a few ideas for you to keep in mind as you tackle your garage to help you make it clean and more organized.
Get Rid of Unnecessary Clutter
The first step in the garage is also something you did in your house. You need to go through all of your things and decide what is no longer useful or needed. Do you have car parts for a car you no longer have? Boxes of holiday decorations that don’t work? Go through everything with an honest and open mind, keep only what is truly useful and will be used.
Items in your garage tend to accumulate dust quickly, courtesy of the large door connecting to the outside elements. Spring cleaning is a great time to dust all of your garage surfaces with a micro-fiber cloth. You may need several cloths, as they will fill up with dust rather quickly.
Clean the Floor
Spring is the ideal time to do a major floor washing. You want to get rid of dirt, as well as salts and more that got tracked inside over the course of the winter. Start by using a large broom to clear the bulk of the dirt away. Then, take a bucket and mop with some soap and vinegar, and wash the floor as thoroughly as possible.
Some of the items in your garage will need to be cleaned, as dusting will not have been sufficient to get them clean. Inspect things like extension cords, bicycles, and seasonal equipment that have mud or other grime caked on them. Take the dirty items outside and give them a good rinse, using soap when appropriate and necessary.
Make Room for Your Vehicle
Now that everything is clean, it is time to get organized. One of the main benefits of having a garage is being able to park your vehicle indoors. Unfortunately for many families, there is not even enough room to fit their car in, thanks to all of the accumulated junk.
Assuming you have gone through all your things and sorted them, you can now decide whether to keep or get rid of them. After you finish this, put whatever things you are keeping away in their proper place. Take care to organize and arrange things so that you can once again fit your vehicle back in the garage.
Install Storage Solutions
If you have completed cleaning and organizing and you find that everything doesn’t fit in your space as it currently exists, you may want to consider getting a storage system. Browse around for various storage systems, and choose something that works for you. There are systems that include everything from stackable storage boxes to weather-proof storage to overhead storage.
No matter what, always put safety first. Use every precaution when taking on a job such as spring cleaning your garage. Be sure to secure overhead storage properly so it does not fall down later. Unplug electrical items before cleaning. Be cautious about sharp objects when digging in boxes. A little foresight can save you both time and pain later.
Spring cleaning your garage can take a lot of effort, but is worth the time and effort that you put into it. When you are done, you will have a garage that is efficient and useful once again.
