I say to myself many times ‘I don’t need to bother about what people think of me’, and you most likely have made this confession too. In spite of myself, when I have visitors, I freak out a little bit. Why? Because having visitors means I have to make the house presentable, and in making the house presentable, I have to clean. In cleaning, I have to scrub this, wash that, arrange this, fold that… you know the drill. I’m pretty sure this happens to many of us, and not just because low-key (yes, low-key) we don’t want people viewing us as sloppy humans, but because unlike diapers, the house is not something we can throw away when dirty. We have no choice but to keep it relatively clean.
You probably have learned quite a lot when it comes to making your house tidy, but it all seems tiring, time-consuming and expensive. It’s basically the pits when you’re trying to clean and discover you don’t have what you need in order to clean something. Well, here are 6 cleaning hacks that you, and everyone else, should know.

SCRUBBING THE OVEN
You obviously are- it takes a lot of time and energy! The easiest way to get the job done is by using a combination of vinegar, baking soda, and water. Mix these ingredients in an oven-safe bowl till a paste is formed and pour the mixture into the oven. Let the mixture do its thing for about 45 minutes (which is a reasonable amount of time for you do some other important things), at 100C. When the time is up, clean the oven with a sponge, and you’d most definitely notice the ease with which the grime comes off. Bye bye scrubbing!
GREASY STAINS ON THE WALL
Not a fan of this, are you? Yep, that’s what I thought- you loathe them. All it takes is a stick of white chalk, a little water and a cleaning cloth. Cover the stains with white chalk, wait for a few minutes, and then use a damp cleaning rag to wipe the chalk away. Easy, right?
GREASY STAINS ON CLOTHES
Don’t know about you, but to me, this is definitely worse than wall stains. Well, here’s what to do when you find yourself in a ‘greasy’ situation- Using a paper towel, blot out as much oil as you can. Now, here’s the trick- glued to the cloth would be some oil, so sprinkle some corn starch on the stain, or color over the stain with white chalk. This action will produce a crust after some minutes. Carefully brush off the crust, and then launder the clothing item as usual.
Hopefully, your guests don’t notice them- if they only look at the ceiling. Carpet stains can be incorrigible, I tell you, incorrigible! What can be done? Vodka, which has a lot of cleaning benefits, can be of great help. First, blot out the stain with a cleaning towel. Next, pour vodka onto the stain, and let it do its thing!
Asides from the fact that cleaning bathtubs can be tiring, I never seem to get all of the stains out, no matter how hard I scrub. Here’s a simple way to clean your bathtub- Mix a cup of vinegar, half a cup of baking soda, with some hot water, and pour into the bathtub. Allow to sit for five minutes, and then fill the bathtub with more hot water until about ¼ of the bathtub is filled. Let it sit for five minutes, and then release drain and rinse thoroughly.
Oh, the thought of this is not delightful, and its actual manifestation is definitely worse. The sad thing is we’ve all been there. If your plunger is MIA, here’s the way out- Squirt a lot of shampoo or dish soap into the clogged toilet. Next, add a gallon of very hot water and wait for a few minutes. You’d be out of that situation in no time.
With these cleaning hacks, you have the time and energy to do the things you actually like! Enjoy!!
