I have been wondering where some of my stuff is from many years ago lately, specifically photos and trophies. You see, recently my son has been asking many questions about what it was like when I was his age. He’ll be twelve next month. By that age I’d already been working as a newspaper carrier for a while. Within another year or so I’d saved enough money to pay for a trip to England out of my own pocket.
I’ve been trying to figure out where some of my old stuff is because I’d like to show it to him. When he heard I went to England he asked if he could go. I will consider it when he is older. I would actually really like to take the whole family.
If we went to England as a family, we’d have to make a big tour of many places. Obvious;y London would be a must, but there are some other places that visitors enjoy as well.
If we were in Northeast England and went to Newcastle I’d definitely want to take my youngest son to the Seven Stories which is a centre for childrens books. I’m sure it’s near a number of Newcastle hotels so we could even stay if we wanted to stay longer and see some historical landmarks like Earl Grey’s Monument, St. Nicholas Cathedral and the old Castle Keep.
In Northwest England we could get a Manchester accomodation. This large city is rich in arts and culture. They have many galleries and museums, and are host to a number of festivals. And I bet my older son would love to see the Manchester United soccer team.

Scotland would be a must. We would have to get an Edinburgh accomodation because there is so much to do in that city. I’d want to go back to
Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh University and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence in Scotland. I’d like to see the Royal Yacht Britannia which the Royal Family used for forty four years and I know my son would enjoy visiting the cafe where JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone as much as I would. A number of famous people grew up in Edinburgh including Sean Connery, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Alexander Graham Bell, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
Now all I need to do is convince my hubby we should go. And we need to save the money.

  1. Edinburgh is a must see if the opportunity presents itself. Bath blew me away. Back then I stayed at youth hostels, but now that I’m 25, ok damnit 39, I’m 39. Now that I’m 39 we be needing more comfortable digs.

    1. I agree. Now that I’m older I think I’d appreciate everything I saw even more. We stayed in hotels when we went, there were like ten of us or so that went from my high school.

  2. That must have been a helluva paper route. I always wanted a paper route but my parents were overprotective and said I would get killed on a paper route, collecting money.
So I accompanied my friend Karen who had a paper route. She never got killed collecting money, incidentally.

    1. Glad your friend never got killed collecting money. Neither did I but that was over 25 years ago. At one point I delivered to more than one neigborhood. And I saved for a long time, over a year.
