It’s been two months since Hurricane Sandy traveled up the East Coast and devastated my area of the New Jersey shore. Areas hit hard by Sandy are still dealing with damage and trying to clean up. Tractor trailers and dump trucks go through my neighborhood all day long, carrying out the garbage and debris. We personally have had items out in the street waiting for pickup for over a month now.

Garbage Pile

One of the things we became painfully aware of following Hurricane Sandy is how badly the floor in our back hallway needs to be replaced. The tiles on the floor are about 40 years old. They’re cracking and chipping and in some places there are even pieces missing. During the eleven days we were without power we tripped back there a number of times. I told hubby that redoing the back hall would make a good weekend project. First me, hubby and our son will go through some things we have stored back there. Then hubby and my son can tear up the old floor tiles. Then we’ll pain the walls, something that hasn’t been done since we moved in 18 years ago. Then hubby can lay down the new floor tiles. The problem is, going through all that stuff and tearing up the old floor tiles is going to create a good amount of trash. We only have one robocan (trash can), and we’re not supposed to put construction type of stuff in there. I don’t want to put any more in the street, because as you can see from the picture above there’s already enough trash and debris out there all over the place from the storm. Being asked to join in The Bagster Bag Blogger Challenge was perfect timing.

Wondering what The Bagster Bag is? I’ll tell you. The Bagster Bag is a solution designed by Waste Management just for DIY home improvement projects. It’s a single-use woven bag that can hold up to 3,300 pounds of debris. In short, it’s sort of a small, portable dumpster in a bag. It can hold things that your garbage can can’t or shouldn’t, including construction materials like plywood, doors, and even a bathtub. It’s perfect for those weekend home improvement projects that need more then a garbage can but don’t need a full sized dumpster. And because it’s made especially for DIY projects, it’s got to be easy to get. Unlike a dumpster that must be scheduled for delivery, The Bagster Bag is available to you at any time – all you need to do is go to your local home improvement or hardware store. Yep, that includes stores like The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware and True Value. Once you get to the store, you might find The Bagster if you look for a display like this.

That display was actually one of a bunch of them, all located inside just one of The Bagster Bags.

Once you’ve bought The Bagster Bag, which retails for $29.95, you are free to use the bag for as long as you need. Just be sure to set it up in a location where it will be able to be picked up by the truck. When you know you’ll be finished with it you can schedule its pickup. Pickup can be scheduled online at www.thebagster.com or by calling 1-877-789-2247, and Waste Management will collect the bag within three business days. There is a fee for collection of The Bagster Bag, it ranges from $79 to $249 per bag, depending on your area.

I’m very curious how well The Bagster Bag works, specifically how much it will hold, if it will break and how easy it is to pick up. We’ll find out soon enough, as we’re going to be beginning our DIY hallway update this week. You’ll want to be sure to stay tuned and watch my posts, or maybe even subscribe to my feed, because I’ll be posting with the finished project and our thoughts on our experience with The Bagster Bag, and a fun giveaway you will not want to miss.

  1. That’s a brilliant idea. We spend way more than that on extra pickup fees every Spring when we clean out our garage. Sounds like a great alternative.

  2. We have used the bagster before! Love the product…its nice because here in our city if it doesn’t fit in the city designated garbage can they don’t take it. This gives us the chance to renovate parts of the home and not have to haul the debris all the way out to the edge of the county.

  3. Wow, this is a really neat concept! I had honestly never heard of it so I am happy you are sharing information. I will have to go check out their social media channels to stay connected with them!

  4. I’m sorry for the damage caused by the hurricane. Eleven days without power must have been very rough! The bagster looks pretty interesting, I could definitely use it to clean stuff out of my garage.

  5. What a great idea! We’re about to do some remodeling to our very old house (I think the flooring in our back hall is a good 50 years old), so I’ll be interested to see how it works for you.
