Sesame Street S’More Digital Magazine For Kids For iPad Released

I grew up on Sesame Street. My kids grew up on it. I loved all of the characters, but always thought Cookie Monster was just too funny. My youngest loves Elmo. The digital magazine that Sesame Street just released sounds like it will be lots of fun! Here’s some more info about it.

Sesame Street S'more App

SESAME STREET’S FIRST DIGITAL MAGAZINE FOR IPAD HITS NEWSSTAND

New York, NY, March 27, 2014 – Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization, today announced the launch of Sesame Street S’More, a new digital publication for families and Sesame Workshop’s first offering on Newsstand. The first-ever Sesame Street interactive magazine app for iPad, Sesame Street S’More presents child-friendly theme-based issues, which provide preschoolers fun ways to learn letters and numbers, be creative and build listening skills with Elmo, Big Bird, Grover and other favorite characters.

Every page of Sesame Street S’More features read-aloud narration and present educational games, puzzles, stories, videos and more. Each issue includes a wide range of activities, varying from memory games to letter tracing and mazes. Children earn badges for activities they complete within each issue. A parent section also provides tips associated with each activity to help increase learning opportunities for children both on and beyond the screen.

“Sesame Street has a 40+-year tradition of creating educational and fun magazines for preschoolers, so re-imagining all of that rich content for the digital world is a natural fit for us,” said Jennifer A. Perry, Vice President, Worldwide Publishing. “Based on research with families, we created Sesame Street S’More to offer interactive hands-on activities about ABCs, 123s and other important early learning skills. We also filled it with read-together moments, humor and music so that families can enjoy a variety of experiences together.”

The premiere issue features the theme Love & Friendship and is brought to readers by the letter V and the number one. Some of the activities include a match game, a story about best buddies Big Bird and Snuffy, an animated video, and the ability to record your own voice in many different languages.

Sesame Street S’More is published bi-monthly and available for $3.99 per issue or by subscription at $2.99 monthly. An annual subscription of six issues is available for $15.99 for a limited time. A free “lite” version is also available. The app is currently exclusive to Newsstand and is optimized for iPad.

We’re big Sesame Street fans here. I remember watching Sesame Street when I was young. I remember introducing Sesame Street to my oldest son early on. My youngest developed interest in it around the time that Elmo’s World segment came out, and for a while it was his favorite. He’ll still sit down and watch from time to time, which he did with this video. My son got a big kick out of seeing the familiar characters and seeing them talk all about animals. I love Elmo, he is adorable. I enjoyed seeing Elmo help us learn more about the animals in the environment around us, and how they live. This DVD, and the show in general, is wonderful because it teaches and reinforces early learning skills. This DVD is a must have for all Elmo fans.

If you have children, or even if you don’t and you’ve spent any time with some, you’ve probably heard “no fair, you cheated” or something along those lines. Maybe you’ve encountered a bad sport? I know I have. We’ve all seen sore losers. “I’m taking my toys and going home.” Or my own personal favorite, “My game my rules”. That one came from my sister-in-law. And there are bad winners too. Wait, what, you’ve never seen a bad winner? Of course you have. “Nanny nanny boo boo.” “You stink”. “Loser!”

Sesame Street: Be A Good Sport seeks not only to entertain children, but also to help reinforce lessons we as parents should be teaching our child. Lessons such as how to play fair, how to be a graceful loser as well as a gracious winner. Here’s the synopsis.

When Abby keeps winning at Hot Potato, Elmo gets frustrated and starts taking the game too seriously. Abby then tells Elmo that she doesn’t want to play anymore, but, since Elmo is still upset about losing, he convinces Telly to help him improve his skills. After training with Telly, Elmo feels ready to try to play Hot Potato again and this time, beats Abby in every round! Elmo can’t stop showing off and is bragging to Abby about how good he is at Hot Potato. Abby is done playing with Elmo, but Elmo is not done proving his new skills. Elmo then challenges Leela to Hot Potato & she quickly realizes the problem. She explains to Elmo that it is okay to be good at something and to feel proud of yourself, but sometimes it is easy to get very excited about winning and get carried away. Winning is exciting, but it is important to remember how your opponent feels when you win. The trick is, when you win – don’t show off; when you lose, don’t get too upset. With Leela’s help, Elmo learns what it means to be a good sport, and then he is able to show Abby that he knows how to be one, too!

In addition to Be A Good Sport there are also two bonus segments on the DVD, “Elmo Learns How To Bowl” and “Winter Worm Olympics”.

My son enjoyed watching this DVD. He loves to play and doesn’t really give a hoot if he wins or loses, he just likes to have fun. The way it should be. This DVD would be perfect for Sesame Street fans of all ages.

Bonus features:

  • “A Celebration of Me, Grover!” full-length video
  • Grover Talks About The Dark
  • Going To The Doctor
  • Cousin Bear Is Afraid Of Monsters

Ever feel afraid of a booming thunderstorm? How about those big bumble bees? Grover knows preschoolers have lots of the same kinds of fears. Sesame Street: Being Brave is packed with stories to help every preschooler feel brave and fight their fears. The curriculum focuses on helping children use strategies to overcome obstacles and face common fears. Children are encouraged to recognize and label their feelings and use different strategies to help manage strong emotions, such as feeling worried and scared. The home video also focuses on empathy, taking the perspective of others and understanding the feelings of others (reading facial cues and body language). To help build children’s vocabulary, words such as pollinate, hexagon, and veterinarian are introduced. Finally, the home video touches upon math skills such as counting and geometric shapes. But even monsters get scared sometimes, Grover thinks there is a monster at the end of the DVD and doesn’t want you to watch! If you are brave enough to keep watching get ready for some of Sesame Street’s most classic lessons complete with a bonus full-length Sesame Street video “Celebration of Me, Grover.” Also included is a glow-in-the-dark sticker sheet for keeping the night fun and cheerful.

My youngest isn’t afraid of much. He really hates being at the dentist, that’s about the closest thing he has to a fear. I remember when I was a child I knew  other children that were afraid of things like thunder and lightning. And being afraid of the dark. I know those are all pretty common fears for children. The newest Sesame Street DVD might help reassure young children about their fears, by showing them that some of their characters have fears too.  This DVD would be great for both old and new Sesame Street fans.

Sesame Street Segment “Elmo The Musical” Inspires New Storytelling App

(New York, NY May 2, 2013) The 43rd season of Sesame Street debuted a brand new segment, “Elmo The Musical,” where Elmo’s imagination creates wonderfully musical and mathematical stories. Not only can Sesame Street viewers enjoy Elmo’s fun-filled and educational adventures on the television show, families can now create their very own stories with Elmo using the Elmo The Musical—Storyteller app. This week Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, announced the new app for iPads, available today from the iTunes store. Elmo fans can create and narrate personalized stories with characters from “Elmo The Musical,” using interactive tablet technology.

Elmo The Musical—Storyteller is a customized story building experience focusing on creativity and imagination. The app allows users to create their own stories using vivid graphics and characters from the televised “Elmo The Musical” segment. Stories are personalized through a variety of decisions made by the user by simply dragging and dropping images into each page of their digital story book. Children learn to tell a story from beginning, through middle, to end as they choose from a library of story backdrops and props, different costumed Elmo characters like “Astronaut Elmo,” and even unique characters created with the user’s personalized pictures. After a masterpiece is completed, users can either choose to listen to Elmo’s friend, Velvet, narrate their stories aloud, or record their own narration using their own voices. These special stories can be shared with other friends and family through email or sharing accounts created on the app.

“It is always important to us at the Workshop to extend the Sesame Street learning experience beyond television, so preschoolers can continue to learn and play in any setting,” said Scott Chambers, Sesame Workshop’s Senior Vice President and General Manager, Worldwide Media Distribution. “Never before have families been able to use our characters to tell their own stories, and this new app allows them to learn and connect to Sesame Street in a way that’s more personal and very special.”

Elmo The Musical—Storyteller is available now in the U.S. for iPads through the iTunes store, at a limited introductory price of $0.99. Regular prices of $3.99 will resume after this promotional period. Later this month, the app will also release on Amazon.com for Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7 and 8.9, and Kindle Fire Gen 2. Elmo The Musical—Storyteller is just one component of a greater transmedia experience themed around “Elmo The Musical.” Engaging and educational games, clips and activities are available on www.sesamestreet.org/elmo-the-musical and mobile devices, enabling families to extend their learning and engagement beyond the broadcast program.

“Elmo The Musical” is an exciting new segment that premiered in Sesame Street’s 43rd season. An extension of the STEAM curriculum, each 11-minute segment is an interactive, fun-filled musical adventure created by Elmo and the child at home. Focusing on imagination and math skills such as enumeration, relational concepts, addition, subtraction, geometric shapes and many more, Elmo takes viewers on thrilling explorations as he imagines himself in “Sea Captain the Musical,” “Guacamole the Musical,” “Prince Elmo the Musical” and even “President the Musical!” Children can sing, dance, play and imagine along with Elmo on math-filled adventures!

You’ll be sure to find your favorite in Sesame Street: Best of Friends, a compilation of fan favorite clips containing over 2 hours of content. Sesame Street: Best of Friends uses music and movement as a vehicle to teach math, literacy and emotions. Featuring classic gems such as Snuffy and Big Bird skating in the Ice Follies, to new favorites such as Elmo, Cookie Monster and Elvis Costello singing “A Monster Ate My Red 2,” there is something for the entire family to enjoy. Sing with Rosita and Gloria Estefan, and join Ricky Gervais as he sings a rather unusual lullaby to Elmo. Catch up with all of these hits and more with this latest DVD for the entire family to enjoy!
Now in its 43rd season, Sesame Street is the longest-running program in children’s television. The series has received more Emmy awards than any other show in television history (146), as well as a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award honoring the 40th year.

MY THOUGHTS

What child (and parent) doesn’t love Sesame Street? I was raised watching it and my kids are too. I love everything about it – the characters have real emotions, there are many educational aspects of the show, and there is always a moral to be learned in every episode. It’s fun, colorful, and engaging for young children.

I was given a copy of Sesame Street: Best of Friends to review, but all opinions are my own. This new DVD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment brings you and your child over 2 hours of some of the most loved Sesame Street clips. Your child will get to see all of the Sesame Street friends he knows and loves, along with some great music and laughter.

The thing I love most about this DVD, as well as other Sesame Street DVDs and episodes, is that it is so visually entertaining for young kids. With my son’s hearing impairment, it is crucial to me as his mom to find visually stimulating toys, games, and movies for him. Sesame Street’s colorful sets and characters are perfect for him. He might not be able to understand the words, but he sure can see the big, colorful numbers and letters and adorable characters on the screen.

Also, as part of Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization, Sesame Street helps bridge the literacy gap with this DVD and all of their television episodes and movies. Sesame Street helps cover important issues that other kids shows fail to touch upon, like divorce, military deployment, and health. You have to love a show that helps promote lifelong learning like Sesame Street!

There’s only one way to quiet Nick’s rumbly tumbly… a chewy chocolate chunky chunk chip cookie!

“Planet Name Game”

Nick and Sally have run out of things to name in the garden. Good thing Cat needs help putting his model of the solar system back together – they can help him name the planets! Off in the Space-a-ma-racer they go on a whirlwind trip around the universe, learning the names of the eight planets as they go.

“Top of the Sky / Jiggle Bones”

“Top of the Sky”

Sally, Nick and Cat are playing with their toy rocket. Using the Cat’s “Whoa-Look-At-It-Go-Launcher,” he shoots the rocket up, up, and up! But now they need to go find it. Off to the top of the sky! They keep going higher until they’re in space! They meet Audrey the Astronaut who explains that there is no top to the sky. The sky turns into space and space goes on forever! Just when the kids think their rocket is lost, they find it in Audrey’s space station. Though they can’t launch their rocket to the top of the sky, launching it to the moon is just as cool!

“Jiggle Bones”

Nick and Sally are wiggling and jiggling like the jelly mold in front of them. But they can’t quite wiggle the same way. How come? “Bones of course!” announces the Cat. Bones keep their bodies from being wiggly and jiggly. But why do they need bones? A visit to Dr. Giggles will answer that question! They learn about the big strong bones that help us stand and walk, the small bones that help us bend and move, and the all important bones that help protect our squishy bits! Even though they won’t let you wiggle and jiggle like jelly, bones are important!

About THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT!

THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT! was created in response to recent findings that children graduating from kindergarten are less prepared to learn about science than about other subjects. The series supports young children’s science learning by introducing scientific inquiry skills, teaching core science concepts and vocabulary, and preparing preschoolers for kindergarten and first grade science curriculum — all in whimsical style.

Featuring social-emotional themed stories and songs, children will learn all about important skills they need to get along with others and strategies on entering social groups. Join Elmo and Grover as they share stories and songs about making friends, taking turns and sharing and laugh along with Professor Grover’s silly antics!

MY THOUGHTS

I received a copy of Sesame Street: Preschool is Cool – Making Friends for review. Though the DVD is aimed for kids a bit older than my 9-month old, I am sure he could appreciate the loveable Sesame Street characters just as any older child does. I love that Sesame Street always provides a simple, yet important message, and kids love that it’s entertaining, colorful, and cheerful. In this DVD, Grover and Elmo learn how to make friends at a new, intimidating place: preschool. Perfect lesson for any little one. I am sure I will get more use out of the message when my son is a bit older, but for now he can enjoy the stories and songs about making friends and working together with others. The DVD even includes English and Spanish subtitles and a bonus full length video, “Ready for School”.
