Custom Replacement Windows Measure Up, Unlike Some Other Windows

Measure Twice Cut Once

This post will look at fitting or measuring custom replacement windows.

Are you familiar with that old saying or shop rule – “Measure Twice, Cut Once”? I am. Problem is, I can measure ten times and come up with ten different measurements. When you have to (or choose to) spend the money to replace the windows in your home, they need to fit correctly. You’re spending your money and making an investment, after all, so you want to spend that money wisely.

If you don’t have the correct size replacement windows you could end up having to have your openings, headers and walls all rebuilt to accommodate that window. It’s messy, noisy, labor intensive work. If you “engineer” a way to use them in an existing opening anyway, you’re defeating two of the reasons you replace windows – appearance and energy efficiency. To ensure the best fit a custom replacement window is the best option. Yes, you can go to a big box home improvement store and buy a stock replacement window. Stock means, well, stock – made for everyone in general and noone in particular. If you have an odd size opening, as we did, using a stock window can cause more problems and expense then it’s worth. A custom replacement window easily goes right into your existing opening, with no “engineering” needed. It looks great because it fits correctly, which is also what will give you maximum energy efficiency and save you money.

Time and the way your home was constructed are two of the big factors that effect your windows. You can’t just measure one window and assume that another is the same size, it might not be.

The other factor that effects your measurements is you – human error. As already mentioned, I stink at measuring. The folks at Jantek Windows will give you an estimate based on your measurements but for installations they do the measuring. The folks at Jantek are very proud of their company and their work. They operate with an attitude that’s akin to something I was taught over fifteen years ago – do it right and do it right the first time. Every window they make there is custom sized, and they want to be sure that every custom replacement window they manufacture fits its opening correctly. That’s a good thing – good for you and good for them. Win – win.

This is Bill, by the way. He works at Jantek. He’s terrific, but I can say that about every single person from the company that I met ans I met quite a few.

Why Custom Replacement Window Offer More Options

This post will look at different options to consider when purchasing replacement windows.

So you know that you need to replace your windows. Maybe you have high energy bills, drafts, condensation issues or windows that are in bad shape. The next thing you need to do is figure out what you want to replace them with. If you go to the big box home improvement store they’ll often tell you that you need to replace like with like or similar, and that you need to replace with the same size. The thing is, the windows in the big box home improvement stores only come in certain premade sizes and styles and options. Why should you be stuck with a style window you don’t necessarily want? So what do you do? You probably know my answer here – get custom replacement windows. Now I’ll tell you why.

My house is over forty years old. Every window in the house was a wood frame single pane window with no coating.

This is the old window from my laundry room on the left and the old window from TJ’s from on the right.

Tj Laundry Windows

What did I hate about these? Well I hated that they were falling apart but I didn’t hate them for that. I hated them because they were nearly impossible to clean. Because of where they were located they were hard to clean. To raise the windows up and clean I had to stand on my son’s bed or stand on the washer and dryer. What a pain! Those windows were double hung with a wood casing, sealed on the inside and painted on the outside. Over the years they chipped and started to rot and fall apart. We checked the two major home improvement stores and they said we couldn’t replace with vinyl tilt-in windows because of the size. Why is size important? The main reason, but not the only one, is because if your windows are the wrong size then they will not have the best fit and be as energy efficient as they can be.

Now take a look at my old kitchen window.

Kitchen Window

That window was single paned and opened with a crank on the inside. What a pain! Over time the crank mechanism got difficult to use and after a while we couldn’t even open the right window. When the left window was open it seemed like someone outside always hit their head. And these two were difficult to clean. I had to kneel on the edge of the sink to clean these. The local home center wasn’t sure what to suggest we put there, because they carried no window to fit an opening that size.

Now for our biggest problem.

This is my old living room window.

Living Room Windows

Nobody wanted anything to do with that window. They told us the windows on each end were odd sizes and that the picture window was an odd size too. Numerous sales people as well as a few companies told us we’d have to rebuild that wall, which we didn’t have the money for.

I started looking into custom replacement windows and discovered that I could replace any or all of my windows with many styles of windows including tilt-in, casement, awning, slider, vegetable, architectural, bay, bow and fixed frame. My choice was suddenly not so limited! And it got better! not only could I choose the type of window I could have, I could choose it’s decorative look and it’s energy saving level!

All of Janek Industries models come standard with multi-chambered maintenance free vinyl frames and double insulated glass. After that you can choose to upgrade to triple glass or a foam filled frame, as well as choose things like half or full screens, color and grid style! Yes, I said color! How cool is that! Using their AccuMatch system they can color window interiors, exteriors or both! So if you’re trying to match an existing color or look, or maybe restore to a historical look, you can do so easily! Or, if you live in one of those “association” communities that have become so popular in our area, you can match all of your neighbors and conform to the rules. I never wanted grids because I thought they’d be too much work to clean. Turns out the grids are built inside of the window, so they wouldn’t attract all of the pollen and dirt that I’d expect they would have accumulated. You can not only choose where to have the grids, top or whole window, you can choose how many squares are in the grid too. Now that’s a lot of options! More options than we were ever given at the local home improvement center.

I’d love to help with any questions on replacement windows that you might have, or to hear any window replacing stories. Feel free to leave your question or comment below.

Why We Need Custom Replacement Windows And Why They’re Superior To Stock Windows From A Home Improvement Store

Heating Bill

For the last three months our gas bill has been substantially higher than usual. Like a good $100 – $140 more per month higher. That’s a lot when you consider that I live in a small one level ranch. Plus, the house seems colder and draftier to us. My Dad’s been over and told us it was cold, despite the fact that our thermostat was set to 68-70. Finally I called the gas company, with whom we have a maintenance contract. I told them the house always seemed cold and we wanted to get the system checked out. A week later they came out and took a look see. The gas man (sounds funny, doesn’t it?) told us a couple of things. The first thing he told us is that we should use a different filter, that the one we were using actually blocked air. He took the filter we had out and told us what to get. Unfortunately, things didn’t seem any different after removing that filter.

The other thing the gas man told us is that it part of the problem was our windows. My house is more than forty years old. Most of the windows are that old as well. The only exception is the windows in our bedroom, which were replaced two years ago. I will never forget the troubles we ran into when those windows were replaced. (You can read about it in my 12/04/09 post.) We had damage to the bedroom windows and the walls around it. We went to the nearby home improvement store to get replacement windows. It was at that point that we discovered our windows were not a standard stock size. Our windows were a few inches different. That may not sound like a big deal but it is. It’s a really big deal. See if you don’t have the same size window as the opening then you probably have to make changes to the walls, the window opening and the surrounding structural support. In our case in the bedroom, the walls, the window opening and the headers above all had to be torn out and rebuilt to accommodate the new size window. It was a lot of expensive lumber and a lot of man hours. It was noisy and messy. I had no idea at that time that you could actually order custom replacement windows.

So here we are. The old windows in my house aren’t sound or efficient. Some of them are completely falling apart, to the point where if you’re outside you can almost see through to the inside. Take a look.

Laundry room window on left and TJ’s window on right. These are the worst ones of the bunch. You can see that on the bottom of the frame it’s eroded away and you can see right in. That means the cold air gets in there too.

Tj Laundry Windows

I’ll have more pictures to show you another time, but I’m sure you get my point. So. If we attempt to replace our current ourselves we’d run into the same problems that we had the last time. RB and I don’t have the know-how on how to build and rebuild. We could try but we’d wind up looking at who knows how much in cost for lumber and materials to get the openings ready for stock windows, on top of the window cost itself. After researching, custom replacement windows are the only solution that makes sense to me.

There are numerous advantages to using custom replacement windows instead of diy stock windows.

  • Size and fit. A custom built replacement window will fit my existing opening. No extra costs to change an existing opening. This also means that since the window will be made for the opening the fit will be perfect, making the window more energy efficient.
  • Simpler installation. As replacement windows just slide into your existing opening you aren’t looking at days of messy and noisy construction, which is just unpleasant.
  • Design. Instead of being stuck buying the plain old white window that’s in stock you can specify what you want your window to look like.
  • Cleaning. I don’t like cleaning windows. Old casement windows like I have now are a pain to clean. Many of today’s replacement windows tilt in for easy cleaning.
  • Cleaning again. The house this time. A window that fits properly will allow less dust and dirt in because there won’t be gaps.
  • Maintenance. The vinyl won’t need scraping, painting, or caulking every couple of years like the old wood windows did.
  • Noise. Today’s windows actually help filter and block outside noises, unlike my old single paned windows.
  • And of course there’s the big reason. Money. You’ll be saving money because your heating and cooling bills will be lower. Your home’s resale value will be higher. You’ll save time and money by not having to perform maintenance on the windows.

The View – President Obama

the view 072910

Whoopi was wearing what looked like baggy judge robes today. Joy was wearing – you guessed it, black. Sherri was wearing a black and white checked outfit that reminded me of a tablecloth. Elisabeth looked lovely in white. Barbara Walters made a special visit to the show and looked wonderful in black and white.

President Obama was today’s special guest. As the 44th President he is the first sitting President to ever guest on a daytime talk show.

Obama said that when he took office the country was losing 750k jobs per month and economy shrinking. He said that the economy is stabilizing and starting to grow again. Joy asked why the White House staff wasn’t being more aggressive in letting the country know how many things the President has accomplished. You know that saying  – there’s truth in humor? I believe it. His answer to her question – “Joy, that’s your job.” I have no doubt one of the biggest reasons that Obama went on The View is to attempt to deliver his message as a form of damage control, an answer to some of the negative things some people are saying and thinking.

Obama feels that if people treat each other with fairness and stand in someone else’s shoes and see through their eyes and relate to where they’re coming from we’ll make more progress. Whoopi asked Obama “who are we”, which I took to be a question about them as two African Americans. Obama said that if someone looks or sounds different people are cautious and people need to fight against that. Barbara asked Obama why he doesn’t describe himself as biracial, as his mother was white. His answer was that if the world saw him as African American he needed to embrace that. He said that he’s less interested in how we label ourselves than in how we treat each other. I found these statements particularly interesting, knowing that Obama himself has made at least one inappropriate statement that I took very personally. (Click here if you want to read my post about that.)

Remember those statistics at the beginning of this post? Elisabeth questioned how Obama could boast that jobs had been saved when the country has an all time high rate of unemployment. Obama answered that jobs had risen for the past five months and had the government not taken the steps it took we would be in a great depression. I didn’t see this as an answer to her question but rather one of those wishy-washy non-answer answers that some people give in the hopes that the audience will think the question has been answered.

Congress voted to spend another $59 billion on the war in Afghanistan. Barbara asked about the recent vote on funding for Afghanistan, in which she said 100 Democrats refused to vote on the funding presented. Obama never addressed that and instead said that we’re ending the war and leaving Iraq within the next month, and that we have a lot more work to do in Afghanistan and the target date for more transition there is July 2011.

The best part of the show was when Joy asked some quick questions. Check it out.

To summarize the rapid fire round.
He said that he did know Lindsay Lohan was in jail.
When asked if Snooki should run for mayor he said he didn’t know who Snooki was.
I laughed so hard when Joy asked if Mel Gibson needed anger management and Obama said he’d rather answer the Afghanistan question.
There is an official presidents tweet but someone else tweets for him.
He has a Blackberry but said noone will share any of “the juicy stuff” because they’re afraid.
He has an iPod. There’s all sorts of music on it but no Justin Beiber.
He was not invited to Chelsea Clinton’s wedding, which he said was proper because the wedding should be about the couple and not other people.

The View – Secret Documents, Southwest, Jersey Shore, Boobies, The Dry Land And Sex

the view 072710

Did the ladies coordinate their wardrobe’s today? Whoopi was wearing a white shirt and black pants. Joy was wearing a black (is there any other color?) dress. I loved the cut of the top, with the deep vee neck – very flattering for cleavage! Elisabeth was wearing a white, gray amd black pants outfit. Sherri was wearing a grey dress.

There is speculation that Chelsea Clinton’s wedding could cost $3-$5 million dollars. Wow! The ladies did make a great point, considering what the Clintons make that amount isn’t that much if it’s accurate.

Six years of secret documents on the US war in Afghanistan have been leaked. Afghanis that have helped the US have been exposed. The information was leaked by an intelligence specialist. I completely agree with Whoopi that the situation isn’t right and it could have repercussions for those helping us as well as their families. Plus news like this could make people thinking about helping the US decide not to, don’t you think?

It seems that recently Southwest Airlines asked a thin woman to give up her seat because an overweight teen needed more room. Elisabeth said that just because the young girl was trying to get somewhere the adult should make the situation work. I agreed with Joy that that all depended on what was happening and why you’re traveling.

Governor Christie feels the show Jersey Shore gives the Jersey Shore a bad image. Jersey Shore is the highest rated show on television right now. Sherri thought that the show might be good for tourism. As a resident of the real jersey Shore I can promise you that we are nothing like those people. They may or may not be good for tourism but they don’t do a lot for positive image. Any other Jersey residents want to weight in on this?

Christina Hendricks of Mad Men is becoming a role model because she’s a “real woman with curves”. How would you take it if someone said you looked healthy? Curvacious? Robust? Sherri informed the audience that big booties are in for white girls now. ???!!!??? Whopi pointed out that women now want their lips to be gigantic too.  Joy asked if people called Christina real because she is real. The women had a funny discussion about Christina’s boobs, I was laughing so hard. Phrases used to describe included “Snoopy nose” and “The bigger they are the harder they fall”. Check out this clip of that segment.

The women speculated on why ladies might be becoming lesbians later in life. Joy feels people don’t become gay, they are or they aren’t. Whoopi said that physical relations with the opposite sex is about teaching where as relations with someone of the same sex might be intriguing because they know exactly what to do because they have the same parts. Sherri says that men and women are designed to fit together. What do you think? Can a person become gay or straight or are they one or the other all along?

Whoopi recommends taking a ride on the Gray Line tour bus for an interesting way to see the city.

America Ferrera is in the new movie The Dry Land, out in select theaters this Friday. The movie looks at post traumatic stress disorder and transitioning from war to being home and how it affects not only soldiers returning home but their families as well. I agree that we as a country need to do more for our soldiers, when they’re serving and after they’ve returned. Whoopi raised a good question – why do we send people to fight for us and give them no place to go when the come back. America struck me as a well spoken person who believes in supporting our soldiers and making a difference.

Dr Martie Haselton is an expert on sexual behavior. She said that studies have found that women change their behavior when they’re ovulating and men seem to know it and treat women differently. It’s been a while since I’ve ovulated but I don’t recall RB treating me any differently at any one time of the month.

Don’t forget, Barbara Walters will be making an appearance on Thursday’s show, on which President Obama is the guest.

The View – Obama, Twitter, Sob Stories, Marriage, Plus Sized Modeling and Disney Imagination Movers

theview 072610

Sherri looked particularly well endowed today in a gray and white dress. Elisabeth was in a green plaid and black pants outfit that looked like it was a tablecloth but it seemed awfully dark and serious. Joy was wearing a black pants sit with a greenish jacket – blah blah boring. Whoopi was wearing some black and white combo of shirt/jacket/trash bag – why does she wear such loose, unflattering things!

The big news of the day was that the special guest for Thursday July 29 is President Obama. Barbara will be joining in from home for the show.

The ladies discussed Twitter and accessibility. The segment started by mentioning a woman who was going to have total body plastic surgery to look like Kim Kardashian. Kim sent a tweet to the woman telling her that she shouldn’t and that she should be with someone who likes her for who she is. Do you think that a responsibility goes with tweeting? Joy thinks Tweeting is “nefarious” and out of control. She didn’t like that people can discuss where someone is, without them participating in the conversation. How is Twittering different than one person calling another, which is what people did back in the days before texting when they saw a celebrity. For the record Whoopi stated she has no social media profiles, because they scare her.

Here’s a clip from the segment discussing social media. Check out Whoopi trying not to crack up at the beginning of the segment.

One contestant on Big Brother said that his wife had a disease that she didn’t have in order to try and win Big Brother. In the end it turned out she didn’t have the disease and knew nothing about what he’d said. Whoopi said that these “sympathy stories” are becoming more and more common in reality tv. The ladies then discussed how they feel most of these sob stories aren’t checked out. Well maybe people are using them more because they know they aren’t checked out. Speaking of sob stories. A contestant on the British talent show Britain’s Got Talent is suing Simon Cowell because she was subjected to humiliation and degradation while on the show. She was mad because Simon said “it is a beautiful song when you’re not singing it” in reference to the song she sang. I totally agree with Whoopi – anyone who goes on these show should have no expectation of anything less than the brutal truth.

Levi Johnston, Sarah Palin’s daughter’s boyfriend. I don’t know what he did now but Whoopi said he’s like a period. I thought that was funny!

Cameron Diaz admitted publicly that she doesn’t think marriage is made to last a lifetime. Sherri said that she thinks marriage is work. I agree! Joy thinks of divorce as a kind of death and that marriage has a shelf life. I agree on divorce being a kind of death but I totally disagree on marriage having a shelf life. With work it can last. Whoopi said she believes that she can not and should not be married.

Crystal Renn was a guest. She is considered one of the most successful plus size models in the world. Years ago she overcame anorexia and bulemia. Recently some photos raised some concern that she was battling some old demons – the eating disorders. She said that the controversial photos were altered to make her look thinner. She was so afraid of being too thin that she wouldn’t exercise for six or seven years but she now feels healthy and is exercising through yoga and hiking. She told the audience that there are different types of modeling. One is if you have a 34 inch hip and is called straight size modeling. Another goes from size 8 to 20 and is called plus size modeling. Crystal has a new book out called Hungry. I thought she looked healthy and would have never called her a plus size. If she’s a plus size then I don’t even want to know what the size I used to wear was called.

The Disney Imagination Movers performed a song. Wow are they energetic! I don’t know who looked like they were having more fun, Sherri or some of the children in the audience.

Tomorrow’s guests is America Ferrera.

The View – Financial Abortion, Selena, Carol And Miscellaneous Silliness

the view 072110

Joy – In black again? What more can I say? Whoopi had on a shirt and vest today, it seemed a little more fitted and flattering than some of the others she’s worn. Elisabeth was wearing a black and white striped dress that made me think of black and white candy canes and black and white candy striper uniforms.

Guest host Jacque Reid brought up the topic of what she called “financial abortion”. I hadn’t heard of this one before and I was pretty appalled. Apparently a sociology professor at Brown is saying that if a man says up front they don’t want a baby before they have sex then they should not be held responsible if the woman gets pregnant. HORSESHIT! I am 200% with Elisabeth on this one – this will make things worse and create even more deadbeat dads. I can’t say this clearly enough – if you willingly participate in sex then you need to be responsible for all consequences. If you don’t want to have a child, don’t have sex. The ladies discussed contracts. Imagine whipping out a piece of paper in the heat of the moment. Whoopi made a funny remark, saying perhaps they should package the contract with the condom. Check out this video, and let me know what you think.

Lindsay Lohan started her 90 day jail sentence today. She could serve as little as a quarter of that.

87 year old CBS Sumner Redstone CEO of Viacom and CBS was recorded asking a reporter to reveal is sources, saying “we’re not going to kill him, we’re not going to fire him, we just want to talk to him”. Perhaps it’s due to age that he clearly was not in possession of his full faculties to leave a message like that.

Did you know that some members of the cast from the show Jersey Shore were on strike? I didn’t. Do you care? Not me. Apparently Snooki, Paulie D, The Situation and J Woww took a pay cut. The rest got a small pay increase but their gel and tanning won’t be included. Apparently the show has been so successful that execs are hard at work creating an Asian American version of the show for LA.

Forever 21 sells younger style maternity clothing. The question was raised why they had so many stores in areas with high teen pregnancy rates. Do you think cute maternity clothing encourages young girls to get pregnant? I think that’s ridiculous.

Selena Gomez, star of Disney’s Wizards Of Waverly Place and starring in the movie Ramona and Beezus was on. Her singing career is doing well. She’s got a new fashion line called Dream Out Loud, available only at Kmart. They did a little fashion show of some of her outfits. Did any of you see that hat that the one girl wore with the jeggings and boots? Yech!

the view 07210 whoopis mismatched shoes

Did you notice Whoopi’s feet? She was wearing 2 different shoes – one black and one white. What’s up with that?

Carol Channing was on to discuss her new CD called “For Heaven’s Sake”. Wow has she had a long career! Not quite sure what was going on with her hair though – doesn’t The View have someone make sure the guests look good before they go on? Come to think of it, don’t they have someone make sure the hosts look good before they go on?

Don’t forget. Tomorrow, Thursday 7/22, Bethenny Frankel will be guest co-hosting and Lorraine Bracco and Christina Hendricks will be on as guests. Frigidaire – In The Heat It Has Power Plus

power plus buttons

(Pardon the awful picture. I have a terrible time taking pictures in my kitchen due to the lighting.)

Summer is here. This past week we’ve had temperatures as high as 104. This is the kind of weather that I hate to go grocery shopping in, because my food always starts to get warm and melt before I’m home. We all know it takes longer to freeze a lot of things than just one or two. With my last fridge there were times I bought ice cream in the summer and after six hours in the freezer it was still soft and not as cold as it should be. This weekend was the first time I got to use a feature on my Frigidaire 22.6 Cu. Ft. Counter-Depth Professional Refrigerator that I was very curious about – Power Plus Freeze. Power Plus Freeze activates a faster rate for freezing food quickly. The freezer runs colder for 12 hours to achieve -6 degrees Farenheit. This feature is great in the summer, but also in the winter if you stock your freezer full of your favorite foods.

You may recall that the Frigidaire has a built in ice maker. It rocks. (Rocks,  as in on the rocks – get it?) It can dispense both crushed and cubed ice. Plus, the ice is filtered! The ice maker produces eight cubes every 75 to 90 minutes under normal circumstances. We’ve never run out of ice. On the panel is a setting called Power Plus Ice. This feature increases ice production, providing up to 37 percent more ice in a 24 hour period. Yesterday was the first time that we’ve entertained and needed a lot of ice on a really hot and humid day. I wasn’t sure how my Frigidaire would handle the challenge.

Yesterday we had guests over from 2 pm until 9 pm for a little party. It was a smoothie party so we had lots of beverages. Those that weren’t drinking smoothies were drinking juice, water and soda – all on ice. With our old fridge, whenever we entertained we had to buy bagged ice. That’s because we just couldn’t make ice fast enough in the ice cube trays. Even when the ice machine worked it took a long time to make the ice. The Frigidaire kept up beautifully. I’m so thrilled to say there was no challenge at all, the Frigidaire surpassed my expectations in the ice making department.

It’s a beautiful thing to open your freezer and always see this when you need ice, don’t you agree?

The View – Summer Diet Show – Cleansing, Lap Band And Exercise DVDs

the view 071610

Today’s episode was the Summer Diet Show, a special edition focusing on weight and diets.

Joy -what’s with the all black, all of the time? Today’s outfit was not flattering at all, it reminded me of upholstery. Whoopi’s shirt was a bit more fitted but still loose. Elisabeth looked great in black and red shirt with jeans. Sherri was in another blue that looked like one she wore a few days ago.

Contestants from The Biggest Loser were on. Helen Philips was the oldest contestant to ever win The Biggest Loser, and Michael Ventrella was the heaviest contestant ever on. They looked great. Helen denied rumors that show contestants go to extremes to lose the weight, stating contestants are tested weekly and that every moment is under camera scrutiny.

Ashton and Demi doing the Master Cleanse Diet as a couple. Elisabeth didn’t think two parents should cleanse at the same time. I don’t know about that, maybe they were doing it for support. Whoopi and Elisabeth are currently doing a cleanse. Apparently cleansing diets are all the rage right now. I’ve never done a cleanse. In all of the diets I tried to lose weight I’d hoped to lose weight permanently. I can’t see going to all of the trouble of some of these diets if the weight won’t come off permanently. If you’ve done a cleansing diet I’d love to know why you did it and if the weight stayed off.

Keri Glassman from Women’s health magazine was on and discussed cleansing – what it is and what it’s supposed to be used for. She said that most people do a cleanse to lose weight fast, rather than the original intent of detoxing your body, and that the weight doesn’t typically stay off. She showed a number of the popular cleanses being done today including Iso Cleanse (900 calories, $150 per day), Blueprint Cleanse (1000-1200 calories, $65-$85 per day), Master Cleanse (Sherri did this one – about 600 calories, no price given), Organic Avenue (no calories or price stated). It was very interesting to see and hear about the different things people are drinking with the hopes of losing weight and/or cleansing their body.

Next up was the Liber family, three members of whom had Lap Band surgery together – the mother and two children. Their doctor, Dr Strain, did a nice job explaining it but my Dr Hottie does a much better job. The family didn’t really seem to say much to me. I think they could have had much better guests speak about Lap Band (like me, cough cough). I’m guessing they had them on because they chose to do it together.

FYI – For those of you that know I had Lap Band and are wondering how I’m dong, check in tomorrow.

Next up were some popular exercise videos. The first was The Wave. It was great watching Sherri get on the board and do the wave. After that it was Jillian Michaels Yoga. Sherri tried, I really think she did. It was hysterical watching her hand on Jessie Pavelka, the handsome trainer that was demonstrating the moves. The last was the Brazil Butt Lift. I was just about crying when she asked him to touch her butt to make sure she was doing it right. Here’s some video from this segment. Check it out, it’s so funny!

Heads up!

The View – Clay, Gay, Mel, Bret, Hungry Girl, Hungry Whoopi And Selfish Only Children

071310 the view

I am so behind this week from doctors appointments.  Plus RB’s worked a couple of evenings so there’s been a battle for the television. As a result, I’m just catching up on my shows.  The guest cohost for 07/13/10 Tuesday’s episode was Clay Aiken, who’s getting ready to go out on tour with Ruben Studdard.

What was that baggy labcoat/shirt thing Whoopi wore? Sherri looked lovely yet “well endowed” in her blue. I thought the burgundy that Elisabeth was wearing didn’t suit her especially well. Joy was back in black, as it were.

George Steinbrenner’s death was the lead new item. Whoopi reminded us that people didn’t like him all of the time but who like anybody all of the time. Excellent point and I agree.

The first hot topic of discussion was more of Mel’s taped phone conversations with his girlfriend. The discussion about his behavior started with speculation that he won’t work again. It then turned to religion and redemption. Whoopi let a “bad” word escape. Do you think Mel’s behavior can be redeemed? How do you think this will affect his career? I think it might affect its short term but long term people forget things and he’ll still get work.

The next hot topic up was the military’s survey of troops asking how soldiers would feel if they had to shower with homosexuals if the “don’t ask, don’t tell” rule was repealed. Clay feels that if the law is repealed then all that will be effected is the amount of people willing to die for this country. He shared the fact that his brother, a Marine, is not thrilled with the idea of repealing the rule.

The next hot topic was that a survey was done to disprove the myth that only children are more selfish. Almost everyone, except Sherri, did not find that only children are selfish. I agree with them, having seen both only and not only children be selfish.  I do think that they don’t always play well with others. Clay got beeped when he said “some kids are a**holes” and everyone got a kick out of that. Sherri said she was raised with the “do as I say not as I do” approach. She thinks that parents are tired because they’re trying to do and explain more today, rather than back in the day where they just said “because I said so”. Do you think only children are more selfish or less social than children with siblings?

Note of interest. Sherri fell in a restaurant and learned that a Twitter follower was in the restaurant and tweeted about it before coming over to help.

Bret Michaels made a guest appearance. He looked great and sounded so positive and energetic since having a brain hemorrhage in April. He said the scariest moment for him was when he heard doctors ask his wife if he had children and to bring them to the hospital. He won the Celebrity Apprentice. He’s just released a new album, Custom Built. He sang a song from the album called Nothin To Lose. He sounded great and so did the song. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the album. He’s going to be being considered as Simon’s replacement judging American Idol, I look forward to seeing his outlook on the contestants.

Hungry Girl Lisa Lillien was the final guest. Lisa showed how to make lower fat and calorie versions of popular snacks from her book Hungry Girl Happy hour. The snacks included pigs in a blanket (Whoppi came out and snagged a snacks), dip, (Whoppi came out and snagged the rest of the pigs in a blanket) potstickers, tartlets (Whoopi came out again and snagged the potstickers) and two alcoholic beverages. Whoopi just cracked me up with the food.
