Know The Night

Know the Night: A Memoir of Survival in the Small Hours

  • Author: Maria Mutch
  • Hardcover: 224 pages
  • Publisher: Simon & Schuster (March 25, 2014)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1476702748
  • ISBN-13: 978-1476702742
  • Cover price $25.00

In this soul-stirring debut memoir, Maria Mutch explores the miraculous power that care and communication have in the face of the deep, personal isolation that often comes with disability. A chronicle of the witching hours between midnight and six a.m., this meditative book takes place during the twoyear period in which Mutch’s son Gabriel, who is autistic and also has Down syndrome, rarely slept through the night. In this tapestry composed of interwoven memories, we see both Gabriel’s difficult childhood and Maria’s introduction to the world of multiple disability parenting.

As a counterpoint to Gabriel’s figurative isolation is the story of Admiral Richard Byrd, the polar explorer who journeyed alone into the Antarctic wilderness in the 1930s. His story creates a shared and powerful language for the experience of feeling alone.

In these three characters—mother, son, and explorer—Mutch reveals overlapping and layered themes of solitude that, far from driving us apart, enlighten, uplift, and connect.

Did any of your children have problems sleeping? How did you handle it? I’d really like to know, so please leave a comment!

Are You Normal? 2 by Mark Shulman is my personal favorite of the three. This book consists of over 100 questions that will test how “normal” or “weird” your child is compared to other children! All in good fun, this book lets you tally up your weirdness quotient for every chapter based on your answers. A very interesting premise that will have your child finding out new things about himself!

My daughter is 9 and has loved “fact” books since she first began reading. All three of these books are right up her alley and can keep her entertained for hours. She loves books with storylines too, but these provide a fun-filled break she enjoys once in awhile!

WIN IT!

Three (3) winners will each receive the books Ultimate Weird but True 2, That’s Creepy! and Are You Normal? 2.

REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – DK Publishing’s Sophie la Girafe Children’s Books

The product featured was provided free of cost to me for the sole purpose of product testing and review. Please note that any personal opinions reflected in this post are my own and have not been influenced by the sponsor in any way.

DK Publishing's Sophie la Girafe Books

DK Publishing’s Sophie la Girafe series is a set of 4 board books for babies and toddlers. The books are Sophie’s Busy Day, Let’s Get Counting!, Peekaboo Sophie!, and Colors. Adorable Sophie interacts with your child in each book in educational and fun ways!

DK Publishing's Sophie la Girafe Books - Peekaboo Sophie

Peekaboo Sophie! is a lift-the-flap book that lets your child find Sophie’s friends hiding behind various objects and helping to build fine motor skills and problem solving skills. There are also a few texturized pictures to help sensory development.

DK Publishing's Sophie la Girafe Books - Sophie's Busy Day

Sophie’s Busy Day follows Sophie throughout the day as she wakes up, goes to the store, bakes a cake, and goes to bed. Several objects are textured, like Sophie’s blanket, yummy apples on a tree, and even the sprinkles on a cake!

DK Publishing's Sophie la Girafe Books - Colors

Colors has a unique tabbed layout so baby can easily flip to his or her favorite color. Open up to a specific color and baby will see an object of that color and a cute friend hiding behind it. The tab aspect can help baby develop find motor skills!

DK Publishing's Sophie la Girafe Books - Let's Get Counting

Let’s Get Counting! follows Sophie as she interacts with her favorite objects, counting them along the way. The book counts from 1-10, as well as 20, 50, and 100. The cute pictures provide a fun visualization of each number for your child.

My fiancé’s first thoughts when seeing the Sophie la Girafe set of books was “Those are girly.” Typical man! I thoroughly disagree. I think Sophie and the books’ illustrations are created in a way that makes both boys and girls enjoy them. The pictures and colors caught the attention of my toddler boy and he loved flipping through all the pages and feeling the textures. The pastel colors used are very calming, but there are bright little pops of color that stand out on each page and pull in baby’s interest. Overall, these books are an absolute hit with me (and my son)!

REVIEW – Candlewick Press Summertime Activity Books

The product featured was provided free of cost to me for the sole purpose of product testing and review. Please note that any personal opinions reflected in this post are my own and have not been influenced by the sponsor in any way.

Though summer is nearing its end for my daughter, who starts school in August, she has made the most of her last few weeks with some wonderful activity-filled books from Candlewick Press. These books help beat the blues on days we relax at home when she’d rather be at the park playing. They are also great for long car rides when travelling on vacation!

Magical Mix-Ups: Pets and Parties by Marnie Edwards (illustrated by Leigh Hodgkinson) reminds me of a Wreck This Journal-type book for kids. It does have a story, but it also allows your child to draw and color on the pages to make the book their own. In this book, Princess Sapphire and Emerald the Witch live in Mixtopia, an odd place where princesses and witches can be best friends. On Sapphire’s birthday, Emerald takes her to an amazing animal show where the star, a magical cat, disappears. The girls attempt to find her on their own while navigating through mix-ups along the way! Your child can doodle, design, draw, and color while she reads to make the story uniquely her own. Recommended for ages 7 & up, $6.99

Candlewick Press Summertime Activity Books

Where’s Waldo? The Totally Essential Travel Collection by Martin Handford is as much of a treat for me as it is my daughter. I have loved the WHere’s Waldo? series since I was younger than her, and this collection has enough searches to keep you busy for months! Each search folds out to show the checklist of ALL the items and people to find in that search – and there are many! This is the perfect time-passer when travelling or lounging. Recommended for ages 5-9 (though I think 5-105 is more like it!), $14.99

Candlewick Press Summertime Activity Books

Sneaky Art by Marthe Jocelyn is a unique book of crafting ideas. The idea of the book is to make “sneaky” surprises to hide for people – whether for a clever puzzler or an easy pick-me-up. The crafts include simple materials often found in the home – paper plates, cardboard, tissue paper, buttons, ribbons, etc. Some of my favorite cute ideas are the Tissue-Paper Cupcakes (shown on the cover of the book), the Cup Dangler, and the Lucky Penny. Recommended for ages 8 & up, $12.99

REVIEW – Nick Lachey’s “A Father’s Lullaby” Book

The product featured was provided free of cost to me for the sole purpose of product testing and review. Please note that any personal opinions reflected in this post are my own and have not been influenced by the sponsor in any way.

Nick Lacheys A Fathers Lullaby

ABOUT NICK LACHEY’S A FATHER’S LULLABY

Parents and their children will soon be soothed by the voice of multi-platinum recording artist and new father, Nick Lachey, who released his first-ever lullaby album, “A Father’s Lullaby,” this March in partnership with Fisher-Price, Inc., a subsidiary of Mattel, and Mood Entertainment.

Lachey and wife, Vanessa, welcomed their son Camden in Sept. 2012 and have been reveling in parenthood ever since. “When I first learned that I was going to be a father, I was inspired to create a special tribute to my son,” said Lachey. “Music has always been an incredibly significant part of my life and a meaningful way in which I express myself. Creating this album allowed me to further connect with Camden while also sharing the experience with families who are on a similar journey of welcoming a new life into their world.”

MY THOUGHTS

As a former teenage-obsessed 98 Degrees fan, it’s hard for me to imagine Nick Lachey all grown up too, complete with a wife and beautiful new baby. Nick set aside his boy-band days to focus on his newborn son and create a soothing lullaby CD for him and his fans to share with their children. Nick and lullabies truly go hand-in-hand – this seems to be what his gorgeous voice was really made for!

The album includes 12 tracks, 4 of which are originals co-written by Lachey.
1. All Through the Night
2. Baby Mine
3. Another Day is Done (Original track)
4. You Are My Sunshine
5. All the Pretty Little Horses
6. When You Wish Upon a Star
7. Father’s Lullaby (Original track)
8. Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)
9. Hush, Little Baby
10. Once Upon a Time (Original track)
11. Sleepy Eyes (Original track)
12. Brahms’ Lullaby

“Father’s Lullaby” was written as both a tribute to Lachey’s father and to his son. “Another Day is Done” is about embracing each moment with your loved ones.”Sleepy Eyes” is a song Nick sang to little Camden while Vanessa was pregnant with him. Aww!

As a mom who sang to both her children while pregnant and as newborns, I’m a sap when it comes to lullabies. My daughter listened to lullaby albums every night until she was about 6 years old. This album takes me back to when she was a newborn and I’d lay in bed with her some nights listening to her lullabies with her until she fell asleep. Nick’s voice and songs have a way of taking me back to those special moments of creating a special parent-child bond that can never be broken. My favorite song is “Another Day is Done.” This beautiful song tells the importance of slowing down and watching your child grow up into the man or woman they’ll become. It’s a truly touching song that I can see being in our lives for a long time.

REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY – David Carter’s 100 Children’s Book

David Carter’s 100: Lift the Flaps and Learn to Count!

  • Age Range: 3 – 7 years
  • Board book: 20 pages
  • Publisher: Sterling Children’s Books (February 5, 2013)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1402787383
  • ISBN-13: 978-1402787386
  • Cover price $17.95

MY THOUGHTS

I always enjoyed the ‘lift the flaps’-type books with my daughter when she was younger. I got a kick out of seeing her get excited to see what was underneath each flap. David Carter’s 100 takes this type of book to a whole new level with 20 pages completely filled with flap upon flap upon flap! As your child lifts the top flap, another one is underneath, waiting to unleash another surprise. Each flap is numbered to help your child count as he lifts each flap.

I think the recommended age of 3-7 is just right for this book. Though it is a board book, the flaps are obviously not made of sturdy cardboard, so very young hands might just be inclined to tear at each flap rather than life them. Though my 13 month old isn’t yet allowed to get his hands on the book for this reason, he still enjoys looking at the book with me while I read. The pictures are beautiful and colorful, just as I would expect of any book for young kids. I like that it’s not too wordy either, which really puts the focus on what the book is meant to do: help kids count!
