Reading Is Fundamental - Help Save The RIF Program

reading is fundamental banner

I’ve always loved reading. I think reading is one of the most important things that a child can learn to do. That saying “reading is fundamental”? It’s true. Without the ability to read everything is limited - education, career and even financial matters. Everyone should learn how to read.

I recently learned that President Obama’s 2011 proposed budget cuts  funding for Reading is Fundamental - RIF is a longtime kids’ program that provides free books to millions of kids. RIF receives 80% of its funding from the government. Without federal funding, more than 4.4 million children and families will not receive free books or reading encouragement from RIF programs.

Currently, the organization is rallying parents, educators and the community with a ‘write your politician campaign’ on the internet - already thousands have offered their support. If you’d like to support this effort just go to http://www.rif.org and sign your name - that’s it!

The following is a statement from Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO, of Reading Is Fundamental:

“On February 1, President Obama released his proposed FY2011 budget which eliminates the funding for Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and its nationwide services. Without this federal funding, over 4.4 million children and families will not receive free books or reading encouragement from RIF programs at nearly 17,000 locations throughout the U.S.

“Unless Congress reinstates $25 million in funding for this program, RIF will not be able to distribute 15 million books annually to the nation’s children at greatest risk for academic failure. RIF programs in schools, community centers, hospitals, military bases, and other locations serving children from low-income families, children with disabilities, homeless children, and children without adequate access to libraries. The Inexpensive Book Distribution program is authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (SEC.5451 Inexpensive Book Distribution Program for Reading Motivation) and is not funded through earmarks. It has been funded by Congress and six Administrations without interruption since 1975.

“Since its founding in 1966, RIF has played a critical role in improving literacy in this country by providing new, free books for children to keep and build home libraries. Access to books and the power of choice ignite children’s hunger for knowledge and a passion for learning. In addition, research has shown that children who have more access to books not only perform better academically, but also become productive individuals whose contributions help create strong communities. On behalf of RIF and its network of over 400,000 volunteers nationwide, I urge all Americans to contact their congressional representatives and ask them to reinstate funding for this vital program.”

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), founded in 1966, motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provided 4.4 million children with 15 million new, free books and literacy resources last year. For more information and to access reading resources, visit RIF’s website at www.rif.org.

Words Move Me - Sony Reader Giveaway

words move me

What moves you?

The two things that move me the most are my children and knowledge. Knowledge takes many forms and my favorite form, by far, is the English language. That’s right - words. I love words. To me, words are interesting. They form knowledge. And you know the old saying - knowledge is power.

I’ve always loved words. The daughter of a 7th grade English teacher, I learned to read before I was 4 and have loved it ever since. As a teenager, when I was supposed to be delivering my newspaper route I
could be found sitting on a corner reading a book instead. Seriously. It was tough for my Mom to yell at me because I wasn’t getting into trouble - I was reading. You can’t get mad at someone for reading, right. Reading was my escape from everything back then. I could fall into a book and disappear for hours, not putting it down until I’d finished (or sometimes until it was too dark outside). To this day one of my favorite activities is to curl on on the couch with a book with a cup of coffee and read.

Sony has created Words Move Me to foster interest and interaction in words between readers all around the world. Readers can share their feelings via widgets. Other readers can search by emotions to find people with like interests. It’s pretty cool. My widget is below.

Sony and I are wondering what moves you. So let’s talk about that.

Daniel X - Watch The Skies Book Review

Last summer I reviewed a book entitled The Dangerous Days Of Daniel X, by James Patterson, on Val’s Views. The Dangerous Days was the beginning of a series Patterson had started writing with the specific purpose of getting young boys to want to read. I wonder if he realized how many girls (and moms) would want to read as well.

I received Daniel X - Watch The Skies as a member of MotherTalk. The second in the series, Daniel X - Watch The Skies picks up where Dangerous Days left off. While I think it’s even better if you have read the first, the book can stand alone for those that haven’t read the first.

In this book we find Daniel still using his powers to change form, move objects and create people. He’s still trying to seek revenge for his parent’s death and fighting evil. His nemesis this time around is the alien Number Five. Number Five has decided to use the town of Holliswood for his own Survivor style reality show. His plan is to wipe out all of the contestants and if he succeeds he’ll continue playing until he fulfills his goal of wiping out everyone on the face of the earth.

Once again I couldn’t stop reading this page turner until the end. Better words could not have been chosen to bring the story home and allow the reader to see it in his mind. I love the short chapters because I think they really quicken the pace and keep the reader glued. I can envision boys in their beds thinking “just one more chapter”. What a terrific book! I can totally see a movie being made from this series.

Daniel X: Watch the Skies is now available at Barnes and Noble, Walmart, and other leading book retailers for the suggested retail price of $19.99.

Your Baby Can Read Giveaway

I’m a great believer in the importance of learning to read. I was fortunate in that my Mom taught me how to read at a very early age. She was a teacher who knew it’s better to teach children to read as young as possible, rather then to let it wait until the child goes to school. She made reading fun, which made me enjoy it. As a teenager when I was supposed to be collecting money from customers on my newspaper route I could be found in quiet areas of the street, sitting on my bike and reading a book. I still love reading to this day.

The folks at Your Baby Can Read also feel the earlier you teach a child to read the better. Read a little about their product and the explanation on why it works. They’re so confident in their product that they’re willing to prove it to one of my readers. Stick around!

Learn What the Experts Already Know: Teaching Reading When Children Are Most Receptive Enriches Them In School And Life For Years To Come

San Diego, CA—June 16, 2009 – Guiding infants through early literacy skills is a natural, stimulating activity that strengthens the parent-child bond and encourages a life-long love of reading. Now parents can develop this exciting time in a child’s life to the fullest with the Deluxe Edition of the “Your Baby Can Read!” Program, offering a multi-sensory approach to early reading skills with a complete set of interrelated books, cards, activities and music, all of which work together to open up a new world of communication for even the youngest children.

The remarkable “Your Baby Can Read!” infant literacy program has been used by hundreds of thousands of babies around the world and changed the way many people view the needs and abilities of even the youngest children. This scientifically-based program builds on the fundamental principle that reading is a natural extension of a young child’s acquisition of spoken language, and that waiting until the age of five or six to learn to read misses a key developmental window in a baby’s life. The complex language-learning process happens at a specific time in a baby’s brain development, when even the youngest baby can easily absorb the visual aspects of language. Introducing basic reading at this critical time makes the whole process easier, more exciting and more interesting for the child. The amazing success of the “Your Baby Can Read!” program has literacy experts and early childhood educators worldwide changing the way they think about reading in young children.

There could be no better gift than the gift of reading, and the lifelong advantages that come with being confident and comfortable with those skills from an early age. The “Your Baby Can Read!” Deluxe Edition offers a comprehensive system of easy-to-use, interactive DVD’s, double-sided interactive sliding word and picture cards, lift-the-flap books, a helpful parents’ guide, a music CD and more. This multi-sensory approach, aimed at children from birth to 5 years, allows parents to get the most out of the “Your Baby Can Read!” program.

Used together or individually, each component of the Deluxe Edition offers a fresh and enjoyable activity. Children using the program eagerly learn new words and begin to associate reading with the warmth and excitement of playing with a loving parent or caregiver. Babies and toddlers also find comfort and stimulation in seeing child-friendly, colorful photographs and words that draw from familiar objects around the home—a hallmark of the “Your Baby Can Read!” program.

“Your Baby Can Read!” was developed by Dr. Robert Titzer, a prominent professor and infant researcher, after noticing the positive impact of early reading in his own infant children. A professor and teacher for over 15 years, Dr. Titzer has extensively researched early childhood learning and development, and his findings have been published in such prestigious journals as Psychological Review. His efforts to promote reading from birth to toddler years, at the same time children are learning the spoken word, has captured the interest of educators, researchers, parents, government agencies and the media worldwide.

One Fifth Avenue review

I love to read. I always have. I haven’t made as much time for reading as I could in the past couple of months and I promised myself I would try and change that. Uninterrupted I can finish most books within two days or less, but I wasn’t able to read uninterrupted this time around. About two weeks ago I started reading the 448 page hardcover book One Fifth Avenue by Candace Bushnell, the author of the Sex And the City book.

One Fifth Avenue is set in New York. When it comes to the descriptions of the city, buildings and apartments the book is filled with terrific descriptions that allow the reader to almost see what the author is writing about. The characters are all diverse and interesting, and written very vividly. At first it wasn’t really clear to me how certain characters would tie in with one another but it all made sense in the end. Two things tie everything together for the most part, money and an apartment/coop building. One Fifth is a historic building is full of expensive apartments, one of which becomes available for sale when it’s owner dies.

Many of the characters have money. In this book the reader learns that even wealthy people don’t always have enough money for everything they want, and that money can’t buy happiness. I was pleasantly surprised to find there was some mystery in this book. I also thought it was really neat to see blogging and the internet featured so prevalently in a book. One other thing that stood out to me is that in this book Ms. Bushnell gave her characters some unique names, such as Annalisa, Schiffer, Thayer, Cem and Beetelle. I’m not sure how easy it would be to turn this book into a weekly series, but I can totally see it being made into a movie or mini series.

I don’t want to give away any more details in case you’re not finished reading it. If you don’t have this book yet, pick it up next time you’re out. I recommend it as a very enjoyable light read. It’s a great book to bring on vacation or curl up with at home on a rainy day. The book can be purchased in book stores and online from stores such as Amazon. It’s ISBN # 1401301614.

Thanks to Parent Reviewers for this fun opportunity!

The Secret Mountain review and giveaway

I was an early reader. I have always enjoyed reading and have tried to teach my son that reading can be a lot of fun. I believe that reading by and with a parent is a big part of the formation of a person’s appreciation for reading and there’s no age to young to be exposed to books. It’s also a great way for parents and children to spend quality time together. Thanks to Team Mom I received samples of some new books published by The Secret Mountain.

From the website - “The Secret Mountain is dedicated to the creation of children’s books, videos and audio recordings of the highest quality. Our main focus is to produce and publish stories and music that encompass the talents of songwriters, storytellers, singers, illustrators and animation artists alike.”

The Secret Mountain books that we received were hardcover books filled with beautifully drawn and brightly colored illustrations. The books are all written by different authors, illustrated by different artists and have different music stylings and talent on the soundtracks. Books come with a music CD to compliment the story. We got to check out the titles “Down at the Sea Hotel”, “Dream Songs Night Songs From Belgium to Brazil” and “A Duck in New York City”.

“Down The Sea Hotel” is one of the newest releases. It songs are full of well known names like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Neil Young, Billy Joel, Carole King and Don Henley. A portion of the profits from the sale of this book are donated to the Breast Cancer Fund. I really enjoyed the illustrations in this book the most out of the three books.

“A Duck In Net York City” tells the tale of a small duck following his heart and making his way to New York City. I loved the songs for this one the most out of the three books. All of the songs are great but we really liked the Belly Button song and the Nose song. “A Duck In New York City” won the Parents’ Choice Gold Award, the Juno Award for Childrens Album of the Year and the National Parenting Publications Association Honors Award.

“Dream Songs Night Songs” is actually a series of three books, each containing a bedtime story and lullabies from around the world. The one we received was From Belgium To Brazil and contained 13 lullabies. I thought it was really neat that the words for the story I love how the words to the story and the words to the songs are shown in three languages – English, Spanish and French, making the book enjoyable for children from different backgrounds.

The Secret Mountain books are available in a set containing a hard cover book and CD or a Digipak containing the CD and a pdf which has the illustrations and lyrics. The Secret Mountain books are available for purchase online through the website as well as through select online retailers. The Digipak set retails for about $12.98 and the hard cover set retails for about $16.95.

I’ve got a copy of “Dream Songs Night Songs From Belgium To Brazil” to give to the winner of this giveaway. To enter visit The Secret Mountain website and take a look around. Then come back here and leave a comment on this post stating who you’d give this book to if you won and the name of one other book you think looks interesting. Contest ends Monday 12/01/08 at 11:59 pm est. US addresses only please. Only comments containing the requested information will be eligible. The winners will be selected using random.org and they must contact me to confirm they wish to receive the prize within 72 hours of my email notifying them they’ve won. Good luck everyone!
