Synopsis - For the first time ever, see the creative world of LEGO® come to life in the all-new feature-length DVD movie. Meet Clutch Powers, the best builder and explorer in the LEGO®universe as he heads off on his most dangerous mission yet. Join Clutch and his team of LEGO®experts as their adventure leads them from LEGO® City to the Space Police prison planet to the medieval world of Ashlar where they must help the rightful heir to the King’s throne find the courage to regain the kingdom from the evil wizard Mallock the Malign. Their brick-building skills will be put to the ultimate test as they face off against Mallock’s skeleton army. Get ready for an action-packed adventure like nothing you have ever seen before, The Adventures of Clutch Powers!

CJ liked the graphics a lot. I found the story to be part Indiana Jones and part Star Wars. I loved the bits of humor that were incorporated into the storyline. “Let me get your legs. I’m not half the man I used to be.” “She brings extra hair.” I loved when one character chastised another for not following the directions when a piece was left over after building a structure. Despite the fact that they were “bad guys” I really thought the skeleton Lego characters looked cool. It was really neat to see so many of the Lego pieces I’ve seen over many years used in the film, as everything in the film was made of Legos.

Disney Pixar UP DVD Review

disney pixar up cover

A few days ago Disney and Pixar released the movie UP! On DVD and Blu-ray. I love Disney movies. My whole family loves them. I didn’t see UP! in the theater but heard lots of buzz about it. I couldn’t imagine what the big deal was about it. I figured that I’d like it as much as other Disney animated movies but wouldn’t love it. I was mistaken about that, because UP! is not like other Disney movies.

At heart I think UP! is a love story. No, I don’t mean a mushy one, it’s not one the kids will say “yeck” and run from the room during. It’s the story of the promise made to the love of a lifetime mixed in with lots of adventure and happiness and even some sadness. The movie starts with short scenes introducing the main character Carl (Ed Asner) to his wife Ellie. They’re both adventurers at heart who marry and plan to find adventure someday by moving to Paradise Falls in South America. Why Paradise Falls? Because that’s where it’s rumored their favorite adventurer Muntz disappeared to years before. As happens in real life, each time they saved enough money something came up and they couldn’t go on their adventure. Ellie becomes pregnant and loses the baby. The couple remain childless but madly in love until Ellie dies. Carl remains in their house despite the efforts of developers to buy his house. When the time comes that he can no longer remain there he sets out to keep his promise to Ellie and go to Paradise Falls. Folks come to take him to the retirement home and he sets off on his journey - house and all! I couldn’t believe my eyes when the whole house lifted off of the ground, powered by hundreds and hundreds of bright balloons.

disney up house leaving

Early in his journey he discovers he has an unexpected travel partner - a very earnest young adventurer named Russell (Jordan Nagai) who’s just trying to help people to get a badge. Upon landing in South America they encounter Dug, a dog with a talking collar, and Kevin, a giant bird. As it turns out Kevin is the mysterious bird that Carl’s hero Muntz had set on to find. From there it’s every man (and dog and bird) for themself! Will Muntz catch the elusive Kevin? Will Carl and Muntz be friends? Will Dug rejoin the pack? You’ll just have to watch the video to find out. I recommend UP! highly, it’s become one of my favorite Disney movies.

Here’s a bonus clip called Talking Dogs.

Here’s some interesting UP! character facts.

* Up has 330 characters and variants.
* The aviator cap is worn eight times in the movie.

Carl

* In Up, Carl Fredricksen’s hometown is Bloomington, PD, which the sharp eye may be able to spot on Carl’s mail. The fictitious location is a nod to director Pete Docter (PD), whose own hometown is Bloomington, Minnesota. The distance from that part of Minnesota to Angel Falls is 3,268 miles.
* Carl Fredricksen’s last name came from relatives of director Pete Docter.
* Carl Fredricksen is so stylized that he’s only three heads high. Most people are about seven heads tall.
* Director Pete Docter animated Carl in the last scene of the film.

Ellie

* Ellie is named after and voiced by Pete Docter’s daughter, Elizabeth “Elie” Docter. She also drew some of the pictures in the adventure book.

Russell

* One of Russell’s merit badges is the Luxo Jr. ball. He also has a badge for 2D Animation, Toe Touching, Knot Tying, and many others.
* Jordan Nagai was 7-years-old when he was cast as Russell.

Muntz

* Muntz’s jacket is the first time in Pixar history where a cloth garment is made of fur. No CG animals were harmed.

Dug

* Dug’s Greek dog pack name was Lambda.
* Dug is voiced by Up’s co-director, Bob Peterson.

Kevin

* Kevin is 13-feet tall.
* Director Pete Docter voices some of the bird noises for Kevin.
* Pixar created new feather technology just for Kevin, but it’s used three other places as well: Ellie’s parrot, a feather duster, and the feathers on Muntz’s wall.
* Kevin’s design is based on many birds, including an ostrich (legs), cassowary (feather shapes), Monal pheasant (feather iridescence), heron and other large birds (behavior), toucan, quail, and peacock (beak and “dongles” on its head).

From classic Old Yeller to classy Beverly Hills Chihuahua to animated Bolt, one of Hollywood’s surest ways to delight audiences of all ages lies firmly at the feet of our four-legged friends. Since the 1997 big-screen debut of the sports-minded Golden Retriever star “Buddy,” audiences have thrilled to the high-stakes antics in the AIR BUD movie series with its fantastic sports-themed adventures including basketball, football, soccer, volleyball and even America’s national pastime – baseball!

A quintet of adorable talking puppies followed the “Bud” movies in 2006, with the highly-anticipated launch of the BUDDIES series – and a puppy craze began as AIR BUDDIES became the biggest liveaction Direct-To-DVD movie of the year!

Following in those triumphant paw prints, the wise-cracking pups went North to Alaska to compete in a daring dogsled adventure, barking up yet another #1 for 2008, as SNOW BUDDIES crossed the finish line as the best-selling live-action Direct-to-DVD of all time*! Released to Disney DVD in February 2009, SPACE BUDDIES sent the puppies where no dog has gone before, and rocketed another hit into the homes of millions. Studios Home Entertainment. “SANTA BUDDIES: THE LEGEND OF SANTA PAWS is destined to become a new holiday classic, securing the Buddies’ place in the long lineage of Disney Dogs.”

Here’s a look at the trailer.

In SANTA BUDDIES: THE LEGEND OF SANTA PAWS, the lovable “Buddies,” B-Dawg, Budderball, Buddha, Mudbud, and Rosebud embark on a thrilling journey to the magical world of Santa’s Workshop. When Puppy Paws, the fun-loving son of Santa Paws, gets tired of the North Pole, he checks out Santa’s “naughty” list and finds Budderball’s name right on top. Puppy Paws heads south to meet the Buddies and find out how “ordinary” pups spend their days. But when the world begins to forget the true meaning of the holidays and the magic of the season begins to literally melt away, it’s up to Puppy Paws and his newfound Buddies to save the day in another epic adventure. Their extraordinary exploits highlight the importance of collaboration, courage and tradition in a joyous celebration of life and
friendship. Sure to be a family favorite for years to come, SANTA BUDDIES: THE LEGEND OF SANTA PAWS delivers enough holiday cheer to last a whole year! It’s Buddy-loving fun the whole family will enjoy again and again.

Ice Age 3 Dawn Of The Dinosaurs DVD Review

ice age 3 dawn of the dinosaurs double pack

I’ve been spending more time with the family doing things together. Recently we had a mini family movie party and watched the movie Ice Age 3 Dawn of the Dinosaurs. I’d seen the first Ice Age and enjoyed it very much. I somehow missed the second Ice Age. I was at a small disadvantage when we watched Ice Age 3 because I didn’t know a couple of things but enjoyed the movie very much anyway. We all enjoyed 3 and thought it was funny.

Ice Age 3 Dawn Of The Dinosaurs opens with Scrat chasing an acorn, as did the first. Manny (Ray Romano) and his wife Ellie are expecting their first baby. They’re traveling with Diego (Denis Leary), who’s feeling old and not the greatest hunter, as well as Sid (John Leguizamo), who’s caring for three dinosaur eggs that they found. The dino eggs hatch and the group is joined by three mischievous dino babies. (The dino babies are really adorable.) The mama dinosaur comes looking for her young and takes them and Sid. The others follow in the hopes of finding and rescuing their friend. The group discovers a secret area inhabited by all sorts of dinosaurs. It’s here that they meet Buck (Simon Pegg) the one -eyed weasel searching for the dinosaur that cost him his eye. There’s lots of chasing through the jungle, on land, on water and in the air. Ellie gives birth in the middle of an attack. I don’t want to give away all of the details but I will tell you that Buck (and the rest of the group) does meet up with Rudy, the dinosaur that took his eye.

Ice Age 3 Dawn Of The Dinosaurs is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. It was released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment on October 27, 2009 in several different formats - standard DVD, Scrat Pack Double DVD and Three Disc Combo Pack. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Also Announces The Fifth Film in the Immensely Popular Fairies Franchise

BURBANK, Calif. June 4, 2009 – In 2008 audiences around the globe re-discovered and fell in love with one of the world’s most iconic characters, as Walt Disney Pictures launched the breathtaking origin story of a beloved character in the fantastic all-new animated adventure — Tinker Bell, the debut film in the exciting new “Disney Fairies” movie series. The delightful tale thrilled audiences of all ages, soaring to reach the year’s number one spot as the biggest Direct- To-DVD release of 2008.* Releasing on October 27, 2009, the enchanting pixie-dusted tale continues in an even more action-packed adventure, as Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure delightfully expands the world of fairies and takes Tink far beyond Pixie Hollow in an original full-length CG animated film that flies to Blu-ray (“Combo Pack” Blu-ray +DVD) and standard def DVD.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment (WDSHE) also announced today that the wondrous adventures will continue in a fifth installment beyond the previously announced four films with Tinker Bell: Race Through the Seasons (working title), which is currently in development by DisneyToons Studios and is directed by Bobs Gannaway.

In the original Tinker Bell, for the first time ever, fans heard Tink’s voice, met her fabulous fairy friends, got a glimpse into the world of Pixie Hollow and learned about her true origins and the unexplainable, mystical wonders of nature. Produced by DisneyToon Studios, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is the highly anticipated second film in the continuing Disney Fairies Franchise and a captivating story that continues the overwhelmingly popular adventures through breathtaking animation, spectacular music and an all-star cast of voice talents.

In Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure Tinker Bell’s greatest adventure yet takes place in Autumn, as the fairies are on the mainland changing the colors of the leaves, tending to pumpkin patches, and helping geese fly south for the winter. The rare Blue Moon will rise, and when its light passes through the magical Fall Scepter that Tinker Bell has been summoned to create, Pixie Hollow’s supply of pixie dust will be restored. But when Tinker Bell accidentally puts all of Pixie Hollow in jeopardy, she must venture out across the sea on a secret quest to set things right.

Along her journey Tink meets new friends, including Blaze, a cute and courageous firefly that helps Tinker Bell complete her mission. It’s a long and dangerous journey, full of astonishing encounters, a few narrow escapes and a daring rescue by Tink’s friend Terence. Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is an exciting adventure and a once-in-a-blue-moon experience for the entire family.

Here’s a clip from the movie called Leaving Pixie Hollow.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts has created an interactive meet and greet at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort with walkaround characters of Tinker Bell, Fawn, Iridessa, Rosetta, and Silvermist, producing a popular environment for park visitors to meet their favorite fairies.

The story of Tinker Bell comes to life in the spectacular production of Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy. Currently in the second year of its US tour, this Disney On Ice show reveals the mystical world of Pixie Hollow and the arrival of Tinker Bell, as well as three other classic Disney stories: Disney/Pixar’s Cars, The Lion King and The Little Mermaid.

Disney Online recently introduced Disney Fairies Pixie Hollow (www.PixieHollow.com), an online destination where fans can experience the wonder and magic of Tinker Bell’s world. In Pixie Hollow, guests can create their very own personalized Fairy and help bring about the change of seasons by making friends, playing games and embarking on quests. To date, more than 16 million Fairies have been created.

Slated for release the same day as Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure, Disney Fairies: Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure for Nintendo DS™ from Disney Interactive Studios follows last year’s release of Disney Fairies: Tinker Bell for Nintendo DS. According to NPD data, Disney Fairies: Tinker Bell continuously ranked in the top five adventure genre DS games from October– December of 2008. The new video game mirrors the upcoming movie’s storyline and also lets players create and customize up to five of their own Fairies. The game also allows players to experience new levels of integration with the PixieHollow.com virtual world from Disney Online, including the ability to upload a Fairy avatar and various gatherables from the DS game to the virtual world.

Both the Blu-ray and DVD have magical bonus features including animated “scenes you never saw,” a guide to Pixie Hollow, and much more, offering viewers an extraordinary trip deep inside the enchanted world of Pixie Hollow.

Rated: ‘G’
Run time: 139 minutes

Story: Experience the extraordinary animation, enchanting music and Academy Award(R)-winning special effects (1971: Best Effects, Special Visual Effects) of Disney’s beloved classic BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS — now fully restored and remastered in the Enchanted Musical Edition with dazzling new bonus features. Viewers will need to hold on tight for a magical, musical, fun-filled journey! When young Charlie, Carrie and Paul move to a small village during World War II, they discover their host, Miss Price (Angela Lansbury), is an apprentice witch! Although her early attempts at magic create hilarious results, she successfully casts a traveling spell on an ordinary bedknob, and they fly to the fantastic, animated Isle of Naboombu to find a powerful spell that will save England! All-new fun is brewing in this Enchanted Musical Edition, including “The Wizards of Special Effects” feature. Also starring David Tomlinson (MARY POPPINS) and Roddy McDowall, BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS is a heartwarming adventure viewers will love to revisit!

I knew that I watched this movie as a small child but didn’t remember it. I was surprised to learn that RB had never seen it or heard of it, But he made for a nice viewing partner.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks is set in England during WWII in the 1940s. Children are being evacuated for their safety. Three siblings are placed with Miss Prince, a serious woman with a secret. The children learn her secret in short order - Miss Prince is an apprentice witch. She’s learned everything she knows from a correspondence course and only has one lesson left to complete her training. She learns that the school has closed after taking charge of the children. She casts a spell on a brass bedknob and sets forth on a journey to find the instructor, Professor Browne. When they find Professor Browne she is surprised to discover that he’s a scam artist. Professor Browne is shocked to learn that the spells actually worked. The two set out together to find the last remaining spell, one that will complete her training and possibly save England.

RB liked the football game on the island the best. My favorite part of the movie was the battle between the Nazis and the museum soldiers. We were both amazed at the great work they did with the graphics and animation, considering the age of the movie. Which brings me to the bonus materials. I really enjoyed the Wizards of Special Effects bonus materials, which explain a little bit about the difference between how they were done then and how they’re done now. What used to require many hours of work and a building sized machine can now be done on computers. It’s pretty neat!

Here’s a clip from the film called Traveling Spell.

Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie (Limited Edition with Plush)

Total feature run time: 66 minutes

Canadian Rating -  G

The spectacular Halloween classic, Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie, is now a limited edition gift set with an exclusive Pooh dressed as Tigger beanz plush –available in limited quantities on September 1, 2009 on Disney DVD. The hilariously haunting movie features Pooh and his friends as they weave unconditional friendship with spooky adventures and warm-hearted moments …  Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie features all of the Halloween-themed original bonus features including numerous, fun-filled Halloween party activities and games, printable party invitations and Halloween-themed recipes. Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie DVD was originally released in 2005 and is the sequel to the theatrical movie, Pooh’s Heffalump Movie.

We love Disney in our house. Pooh and all of his friends are my very favorite characters. CJ and I cou;d sit and watch the Pooh movies for hours. This week the Pooh Heffalump Halloween movie is being released as part of a limited edition gift set. I collect Disney beanies, particularly the Pooh characters, so this gift set is a big hit in my house.

poohs heffalump halloween movie picture

In the Pooh Heffalump Halloween Movie it is Halloween in the Hundred Acre Wood. Little Roo is excited that he’s going to accompany Lumpy (a young Heffalump) trick or treating and celebrating his first Halloween. Pooh is wanting a snack (isn’t he always?) and eats all of the Halloween candy in the Hundred Acre Wood. Rabbit offers his vegetables as treats but they’re just not the same.  Tigger tells the story of the Gobloon, a mysterious character that lives in the Tree of Terror that will grant one wish to the person that catches him. Roo decides he and Lumpy need to catch the Gobloon so they can wish for more candy. On their quest to find the Gobloon Roo and Lumpy face their fears and discover the meaning of friendship. The trek would not be the same if it didn’t include typical Hundred Acre Wood confusion.

We enjoyed the bonus features quite a bit. The Trick Or Retreat game was cute, you have to find the missing candy by deciding which trail to follow on the screen. CJ preferred the Pass The Pumpkin game and won almost every time.  We love the gift set. It’s a great edition to anyone that loves Pooh and Disney, or anyone that wants a totally adorable beanbag.

The DVD Gift set Includes:

*Original Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie DVD
*Pooh Dressed as Tigger beanz plush

ORIGINAL DVD BONUS FEATURES

Fun Games including:

*Trick or Re-Treat
*Pooh’s Boo Bingo!
*Pass the Pumpkin

Plus, Heffalump Halloween Party Planner
*Printable Party Invitations
*Halloween-themed Recipes
*Decorate Your Own Jaggedy Lantern

How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days DVD Review

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Available to own on DVD and Blu-Ray on August 18, 2009
Runtime: 115 minutes
U.S. Rating: PG-13
Canadian Rating: PG

The premise of How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days is simple. Andie Anderson (Kate Hudson), a writer, sets out to write a story (based upon a history of actions taken by one of her closes friends) about the things women do to drive men they date away. She sets out to meet and date a man that she can send running in the other direction within 10 days. At the same time Ben Barry (Matthew McConaughey),  a womanizing advertising exec, is promised the opportunity to pitch a big campaign if he can make a woman fall in love with him within 10 days. Two female execs from his firm push him into dating the writer.

Once the pair starts dating hilarity ensues. I watched this comedy with RB and we both enjoyed it very much. I was young, single and silly once but never left 19 messages on a person’s answering machine in one day! Andie’s antics are funny and at times, extreme. There were a couple of points where I actually felt badly for Ben, even though I knew he wasn’t being honest about the relationship either.

Other cast members include Kathryn Hahn, Annie Parisse, Adam Goldberg, Thomas Lennon, Michael Michele, Shalom Harlow, Robert Klein and Bebe Neuwirth.

The disc also contains special features including:

  • Commentary by director Donald Petrie
  • How to Make a Movie in 2 Years (HD)
  • Why the Sexes Battle (HD)
  • Girls Night Out (HD)
  • Music Video: “Somebody Like You” by Keith Urban
  • Deleted Scenes with optional commentary by director Donald Petrie

The Tiger’s Tail DVD Review

The Tiger’s Tail

Own it on DVD on August 11, 2009

Total Run Time: 97 Minutes
MPAA Rating: R

The Tiger’s Tail was written and directed by five-time Academy Award nominee John Boorman. The cast includes Golden Globe nominee Brendan Gleeson (Best Supporting Actor, In Bruges), Golden Globe winner Kim Cattrall (Best Supporting Actress, “Sex and the City”), Ciaran Hinds (There Will Be Blood), Sinéad Cusack (Eastern Promises) and Seán McGinley (Gangs Of New York).

Synopsis - “In a society divided by “haves” and “have nots,” wealthy Irish capitalist Liam O’Leary (Brendan Gleeson) has it all. But now, Liam is being stalked by a menacing look-alike, intent on stealing away everything he has: his job, his wife (Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall), and his sanity. As his perfect world comes crashing down, Liam must fight to stay alive and uncover the shocking secret of his shadowy past before it destroys him.”

In the suspense movie The Tiger’s Tail Liam O’Leary (Brendan Gleeson) is a fortunate man. As a successful Irish businessman with a beautiful wife (Kim Cattrall) he has it all. He begins to question his own sanity when he begins seeing his double everywhere. He’s convinced that the stress and pressure of his career have driven him over the edge but it has not. His very real double resents Liam’s success and wants to take everything away from him. How well will Liam fare in this battle for his life?

At times I thought The Tiger’s Tail was a bit dark and eerie. His road to questionable sanity is not direct. I thought the movie moved a little slow at one or two points but if it had been cut much more the backstory might not have worked so well. Can you imagine finding out that your whole life is not what you thought and that it was based on a lie? Can you imagine someone having so much anger and resentment that they want to take over your life?

The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary DVD Review

The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary DVD

Available on DVD on August 4, 2009

Rated: U.S. G, Canada G

Total feature run time: 77 minutes

Winnie the Pooh and all of his friends are my favorite animated characters in the world. They always have been. My son CJ now shares that love. We have all of the Pooh movies on either VHS or DVD and some of them have been played so much they’re worn out. I was thrilled to be able to replace a worn out VHS when I recently reviewed Disney’s The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary DVD.

The Tigger Movie is the story of Tigger’s search for his family. When Tigger (Jim Cummings) is asked about his family he realizes he’s never seen any so he decides to try and find them. He begins by writing a letter. When the letter goes unanswered Tigger’s friends decide to collaborate to create a fake letter so Tigger isn’t disappointed. Tigger discovers the ruse and sets out to find his family right in the middle of a big snowstorm. Worried, Tigger’s friends set out to find him. When they finally do, Tigger realizes that what he’s been looking for has been right before his eyes.

I loved this film just as much now as I did when I first saw it. I love the moral of the story. The colors are bright and vivid. Anybody that enjoys Disney movies, Pooh movies or animated movies will certainly want to add this to their collection. For those people like me that already owned it on VHS, get the DVD. Seeing all of the bright colors will make it like you’re seeing it all over again for the first time when compared to your worn out video tape. I’m so glad we have the DVD now, so CJ can continue to enjoy it for years to come.

The Tigger Movie 10th Anniversary DVD is a 2 disc set that contains the feature film, a digital copy of the movie to watch in Windows or iTunes formats, two new Tigger adventures (”King of the Beasties” and “Tigger’s House Guest”), games and music. It’s available for purchase both online and in retail stores nationwide.

Take a look at this clip of Lifting The Rock for a movie preview.
