Driscoll’s Blackberry Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Recipe And A Giveaway

Did you know that July was not only National Ice Cream month but also National Berry Month? I love strawberries but I thought it would be fun to share some facts that I got from Driscoll’s about another berry, the blackberry, along with a recipe for some homemade frozen yogurt.

Blackberries

Known as the “cabernet” of berries for their earthy, wine-like taste, Driscoll’s Blackberries are an easy and healthy addition to anyone’s diet. Aside from being tasty, Driscoll’s Blackberries are loaded with dietary fiber, heart-healthy polyunsaturated fats, Vitamin C and antioxidants, making them quite beneficial for staying healthy and even losing weight.

Besides the typical berry health benefits, Driscoll’s Blackberries also contain a high amount of tannin – a nutrient that studies have shown to tighten tissue, alleviate diarrhea and intestinal inflammation, and even treat sore throats and mouth irritations.

Feel like testing your culinary talent? Blackberry cobbler is always a hit. Or, for a slightly more healthy and simple treat, pair Driscoll’s Blackberries with pears and almonds and sprinkle over salad.

1 cup of blackberries = 6g of fiber, which is 1/3 of your daily recommended intake, much more than bananas, grapes or apples!

A one-cup serving of blackberries provides:
60 Calories with 2g Protein and only 1g Fat
50% of your day’s supply of Vitamin C
32% of your day’s supply of Fiber
9% of your day’s supply of Folic Acid
6% of your day’s supply of Iron
4% of your day’s supply of Calcium
4,654 ORAC Value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity measures antioxidant levels)

BLACKBERRY-CHOCOLATE FROZEN YOGURT
Makes 1 ½ Quarts

  • 2 (16-ounce) cartons vanilla low fat yogurt
  • 2 ½ cups Driscoll’s Blackberries
  • ½ cup light-colored corn syrup
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ cup coarsely chopped semisweet chocolate (3 ounces)

In a blender container or food processor bowl, combine half of the yogurt, ½ cup of the berries, half of the corn syrup and half of the sugar. Cover and blend or process until almost smooth. Pour mixture into ice cream freezer container. Repeat. Freeze mixture in an electric ice cream freezer according to manufacturer’s directions. Remove dasher from freezer. Add remaining 1½ cups berries and the chopped chocolate; stir to distribute. Ripen*.

*Note: To ripen frozen yogurt or ice cream, after stirring in berries and chocolate, cover top of freezer can with waxed paper or foil. Plug hole in lid and replace lid. Pack outer freezer bucket with enough ice and rock salt to cover top of freezer can, using about 4 cups ice and 1 cup salt. Ripen about 4 hours.

Nutritional Information Per ½ Cup Serving: 175 calories, 3g total fat (2g saturated fat), 5mg cholesterol, 70mg sodium, 32g carbohydrate, 3g dietary fiber, 4g protein.

Doesn’t that sound delicious?! Want to try making some? I’ll give you the blackberries, courtesy of Driscoll’s of course.

Free Ice Cream Day At Walmart

We love ice cream in my house. It’s considered one of the staples, something that’s always on the grocery list. As one of the Walmart More Than 11 Moms I found out that Walmart will be having a Free Ice Cream Day at 2,000 Supercenters on Saturday May 30, 2009 between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm. And it isn’t just one kind, it’s full servings of well known brand name treats like Dibs, Blue Bunny Aspen Frozen Yogurt Granola Bar and Ben & Jerry’s Flipped Out Cups. I don’t have a Supercenter within an hour of me (they probably won’t put one here because they’re afraid I’ll move in and sleep there) but you might be close to one. Just click the button to see how if there’s one near you. Have a happy free ice cream day!

Haagen Daz Five review and giveaway

Last week I received a delivery. That in itself is nothing unusual. What was unusual about this delivery is that the contents were packed on dry ice. What was in the box? Was it the greatest test of my willpower I’ve ever encountered? Was it a new product that Mom Central wanted my opinion on? Answer yes on both counts.

Häagen-Dazs is a well known brand of ice cream that I have always enjoyed and found to be rich and delicious. The latest edition to the Häagen-Dazs family, the Häagen-Dazs, is more of what you expect from Häagen-Dazs, and less. Häagen-Dazs Five is a new ice cream consisting of only five ingredients. Häagen-Dazs Five ice cream gives you more of the delicious premium taste you expect from Häagen-Dazs even though it has fewer ingredients. Each of the flavors in the Five line have four natural ingredients in common – milk, cream, sugar and eggs, as well as one all natural individual flavor as well as one natural distinct flavor. The line consists of seven flavors – mint, ginger, passion fruit, brown sugar, vanilla bean, coffee and milk chocolate. The Häagen-Dazs Five series is in stores now and retail for $4.29.

I received four of the new flavors to try – brown sugar, mint, ginger and passion fruit. I’m on a pre-surgical diet so I couldn’t eat ice cream like I normally would. Good thing for the RB, because that meant he got some too. I only allowed myself to try one flavor a day and only had two baby spoons of each flavor, definitely making this the hardest review I’ve ever done. A few things struck me about the Five line. First is the texture and flavor. There was no grit or funky texture, the ice cream was very smooth. I was able to taste each of the individual natural flavors clearly without them being overwhelming. And almost unbelievably, the ice creams are made with skim milk! That means they have less fat. RB liked the passion fruit best, followed by the mint. He really wants to try the coffee and the vanilla bean flavors. I couldn’t decide which was my favorite – the brown sugar or the mint. The brown sugar was warm and tasted just like the brown sugar you use when cooking. The mint was really cool and flavorful. I really want to try the milk chocolate and the vanilla bean flavors.

WIN IT!

Two winners will each be able to try a 14 ounce container of the Häagen-Dazs Five series in the flavor of your choice by using a coupon I will mail you.

HOW TO ENTER.

To enter visit the site and check out the Häagen-Dazs Five. Then, leave a comment here with the flavor you’d most like to try.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream

We LOVE ice cream in my house. I simply cannot keep it in the freezer. We all have different favorites. My oldest loves plain chocolate. My youngest seems to like everything he’s tried so far. Hubby likes butter pecan. My all time favorite is chocolate cookies and cream, which I can’t find anywhere, so I usually go with my second favorite which is cookies and cream. Today I found a contest, over on Mom’s In A Blog. The prize is ice cream. I gotta get me some of that. I think I deserve to win because it seems whenever I go for a bowl of ice cream in my house there isn’t any left, or there’s only a spoonful. nobody ever thinks to be sure there’s enough for a bowl for me, self preservation rules in my house when it comes to ice cream. What kind of ice cream do you like?
