No More Cold Coffee

beverage warmer

I hate the way some hot beverages cool off so quickly. At work if I’m in the mood for a hot beverage I drink coffee or hot chocolate. I sip both. A cup of hot chocolate is usually getting cold at ten minutes, coffee a little longer at fifteen.

My Mom knew that I like my coffee warm so she got me something to help solve the problem for Christmas. She got me a beverage warmer. I think of it as thermal heating services for my desk. It’s working out great. The hardest part of using it was finding an empty plug under my desk. I love it. My cup and its contents stay warm and tasty now. Thanks Mom!

Bonefish Grill Restaurant Review

bonefish grill logo

Just before Christmas I was invited to visit our local Bonefish Grill for dinner. I’d never been to one of their restaurants, of which there are more than 150 nationwide. The Bonefish Grill is mainly a seafood restaurant but does offer a few chicken, beef and pork meals. The meals range from quick and casual handheld items to delicacies to enjoy sitting down in a relaxed atmosphere.

At the point of our visit they were in the midst of a really cool campaign - the Give, Get and Win Sweepstakes. During that sweepstakes Bonefish was offering a $20 bonus gift card when you purchased $100 in gift cards, along with a chance to win a grand prize of $5,000 in cash and $5,000 to give to a local charity of their choice from select charitable organizations. Bonefish Grill employees nationwide all volunteered a day of service to a local charity during the holiday season as well, in an effort to give back to their communities.

bonefish corn crab chowder

We had a very enjoyable dinner. Jerry our server was very nice. The warm, fresh bread was a big hit and our table went through three baskets of it. Salads were served. RB had corn chowder with lump crab and thought that it was one of the best soups he’d ever had.

bonefish bacon wrapped scallops

For appetizers, which are made fresh daily, we got Bang Bang Shrimp, which is a “tender, crispy shrimp tossed in a creamy, spicy sauce” and Bacon Wrapped Atlantic Sea Scallops, which are “tender & crispy and topped with chutney and served with mango salsa”.

bonefish filet mignon

bonefish sirloin steak

bonefish lobster thermidor

Next up were the entrees. I was impressed to see that Bonefish offers some gluten-free selections on the adult menu. I would have liked to see one or two gluten-free selection on the children’s menu, as CJ can’t have gluten but at 10 years old in no way requires an adult size meal. TJ had a filet mignon that was trimmed beautifully. Mom had lobster thermidor with maui maui and Dad has the sirloin steak. RB had the sea scallops and shrimp, which he said were outstanding. My favorite item was the garlic mashed potatoes, which were creamy and smooth and just melted in my mouth. My parents ordered creme brulee - chocolate for Mom and vanilla for Dad. I took a spoonful of both and really enjoyed the vanilla. Portions were quite reasonable. Service was good but not excellent, something I attributed to the holiday season. This was later confirmed by the manager Holly when she stopped by our table  to apologize for any delays we’d experienced. We enjoyed the food and company tremendously and will return in the future.

Currently Bonefish is having a contest on Facebook. To celebrate this season of healthy resolutions they’re giving ten winners a dinner for two at Bonefish Grill. To enter all you need to do is visit the Bonefish Grill Facebook page and check their status for the current question, then leave a comment on the wall with your answer. Winners will be announced throughout the month with the final winner being announced on 02/01/10.

You can also follow Bonefish Grill on Twitter.

The Bonefish Grill would make a great place to go on a date night or with family or friends. It’s also a great gift idea as they do offer gift cards.

A gift certificate (which covered a portion of the check) was provided to me for the sole purpose of product testing and review. Visual Voicemail, A Possible Answer To Mom’s Problem

visual voicemail

I’ve seen the term visual voicemail mentioned a few times lately and wondered what in the world it was. Smith Micro, a company specializing in computer security and technology, has come up with programming that allows you to get your voicemail messages without dialing your voicemail. From what I read they appear in a list on your phone, showing the number of the caller. That part doesn’t sound new, it sounds kind of like the received and missed calls list to me. What did sound neat is that you can see if you’ve replied or not, as well as forward messages from your contacts. Those mobile connection management features would be great for folks that use their cell phones exclusively or heavily. The feature it has that would be helpful to both customers and mobile phone companies is that is removes the need for voicemail passwords, omitting all of those calls to tech support for forgotten passwords.

We’re forbidden to leave my Mom voicemail messages on her cell phone - she can’t get them out. I don’t understand why not but anyway. It seems to me that a mobile connection manager might help her address that problem. Maybe I should see if I can buy her a year of it as a Christmas gift…

Elmo Tickle Hands

elmo tickle hands

Have you seen Elmo Tickle Hands? They are so cute! CJ is 10 but still loves Elmo and Sesame Street. I am seriously considering getting this for him for Christmas. What I like about it is that the toy is really interactive. Don’t get me wrong, other Elmo toys are adorable to watch. What makes the Tickle Hands fun is that they’re gloves that the child can wear. When the wearer touches something with their right hand the glove vibrates and you hear Elmo. (The left hand is for looking cute only and it does that well.) The other thing I like is that the toy comes with a DVD that will teach you how to do the Tickle Hand Groove dance, which is awesome because it encourages children to get up and dance.

Do you have or have you seen Elmo Tickle Hands? What do you think about it?

My Christmas ghosts

For about 15 years now I’ve started my holiday decorating on the day after Thanksgiving. While other people are shopping on Black Friday I go to the cemetery with my Mom to visit my Grandma and then start decorating the house when I get home. There have been many times that my husband would go outside and find me teetering on something I shouldn’t be on, hanging lights. Not this year. I skipped decorating the house, inside and out, completely this year. Yep, you could say I wasn’t in the mood.

For as long as I remember I’ve had a real Christmas tree. I love the scent of them. I love sitting in the dark with a cup of coffee looking at all of the softly glowing lights, especially on Christmas Eve after the kids had gone to bed and all of the presents were underneath. I’d never questioned spending $25-$60 on something that we’d use for two to three weeks and then throw away. By the end of 2008, money was so bad I’d decided there would be no tree.

TJ was appalled at the idea of not having a tree and it’s only because he asked that we got a Christmas tree at all. I felt we couldn’t spare the cash to buy a real tree as we’d always done in previous years. On the 17th I grudgingly handed my husband a Home Depot gift card that I’d won and was going to use on a new faucet and said he should “go to Home Depot and get an inexpensive fake tree”. I realized after the fact that Home Depot has sold real trees for many years and I could have told hubby to buy a real one using that gift card. He realized this at the store but wasn’t crazy enough to argue with me that day. But I think subconsciously I wanted the fake tree because it would be different. Everything else about the holiday season seemed different - the money, the mood, just everything. Why not the tree? On the 20th he put up the tree and the boys and I decorated while he was sleeping.

I wrapped the gifts we had on Christmas Eve and put them under the tree. I turned the lights in the room off and sat for a while. The tree was as dark as my mood had been for weeks. Christmas morning we behaved as is usual. I was still in a funk until I received an unexpected gift from my son. (Read about the gift in my 01/09/09 article on the New Jersey Moms blog. It’s short and won’t take more than a minute or two. Click RIGHT HERE and it’ll open in another tab so you can read it. Go ahead, I’ll wait. You need to read it for the rest of this to make sense.)

Oh, you’re back! Isn’t that the best Christmas gift! And so timely too! My spirits having raised a little, we enjoyed some quiet time relaxing and then went up to my parents. I was off for the rest of the year as usual. On New Years Day I said to hubby that the next day I needed him to bring in the box for the tree so that we could take it down. He left the room and came back with the box and said “let’s do it now”. Somehow it made sense. He and I “undecorated” the tree together in an odd almost ghostly silence and packed it away. It was just one box of ornaments this year, a big change from my usual mountain of boxes and storage bins. It took fifteen minutes, a far cry from the usual two days. In repacking the ornaments I decided it was a good time to throw away the ones that were broken or coming apart.

As I tied that bag shut to go out to the garbage I promised myself that next year I will try hard not to let the ugly Ghost of Christmas Past take over again. I’m hoping 2009 is a good year and I am hopeful that I will be joined by a nice, peaceful, grateful and happy Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. And if they do happen to pass in the hall, I hope the nice ghost kicks that ugly bitch’s ass back to where it came from and it stays there.

This post was written as part of the Parent Bloggers Network’s blog blast on getting ‘Back in the Swing of Things”, sponsored by SC Johnson. SC Johnson’s new website Right@Home is full of helpful homecare articles about cleaning, cooking, home design, and family fun. It’s a very nice, helpful site and you won’t find any ugly ghosts there either.

Stuffy Saturday and my Christmas gift

If anyone would like to know what I got for Christmas you can read my article, My Gift From Santa, that ran yesterday on New Jersey Moms Blog.

I wasn’t feeling great today so I took it easy today. Just wondering. Why is it that saline spray helps open a stuffy nose for a few minutes but then it’s like you didn’t use it at all?

I caught up on the soaps that had recorded on my Tivo in the past week. Hubby was awake for most of the day. My Mom stopped by for a little visit.

Lump it Leapfrog!

I ordered a Thomas computer game directly from Leapfrog for CJ. The game was $14.99. I ordered it on Monday and paid almost $16 more to ship it second day. I asked if it would definitely be delivered before Christmas and I was promised that I’d made the cutoff and it would. It wasn’t. I was disappointed, and angry, that my brother got CJ the Clicksmart computer for Christmas and had no games to play with it. The game finally arrived the day after Christmas. How anti climactic.

I called Leapfrog on Monday morning. I explained what had happened to the young man with the heavy accent and he asked me what I wanted. I asked him if they would please credit me the difference between the ground shipping and the rush second day shipping I had paid for. Having worked in a call center for more then ten years I do consider this a reasonable request. It’s also my experience that any company that values that customer and wants to keep them as a customer would agree to the offer or try to find a mutually agreeable one. He had me hold for a few minutes. When he came back onto the phone he told me he was willing to offer me 10% off of my next purchase. I actually laughed out loud. I explained to him that I felt his offer of what would amount to about $1.00-$1.49 was unacceptable. He said that was all he could do. I told him I didn’t plan on placing a second order with them since my first order didn’t get to me on time. I asked if there was a supervisor and he said no. At that point my husband’s head turned halfway around, something like the Exorcist, because I was starting to yell. So, I told the Leapfrog rep that I would be putting my complaint in writing and hung up after he said good bye.

I have written my letter and will be mailing it tomorrow.  I have also unsubscribed myself from the two newsletters I was receiving, not that they’ll notice. It won’t change the fact my son didn’t have his game but it’s something I feel I need to do.

Sears Heroes At Home

I believe in supporting our military. If you’re a regular reader then you know my brother is in the Navy and was deployed for seven months last year. I have always felt that our servicemen and women deserve to make more money, and that we should do everything within our capabilities to support them. In many cases these people make less then you and I and yet have the same bills and financial responsibilities.

I became aware of the Sears Heroes At Home Wish Registry in December. When I first heard about it I thought it was a charity but when I took the time to read about it I learned it’s not. It’s a support program.

Sears created Heroes At Home as a way for us to help our military families get the items they want or need the most. The program begins with servicepeople registering at the site and listing the items they need the most or would most like to receive. Then, when people like you or I donate money to the Heroes At Home program, Sears gift cards are given to those servicepeople so that they can buy those items.

Heroes At Home isn’t a charity. It isn’t tax deductible. It’s not a handout. What it is is a gift. In the same way you give gifts to friends, colleagues and acquaintances, you can give a gift to someone who serves our country. I think it’s a great way for us to say thanks to the people that fight so hard for our country.

These servicemen and women have included all sorts of things in their lists. In many cases the items are for their families and children. I know what it’s like to want something for my children for Christmas (Wii Fit and PS3) and not be able to get it. It’s at times like this that I realize even when things aren’t going great for me that they’re even worse for others. I don’t ever wish to know what it’s like to need clothes for my children.

Please consider donating to the Heroes At Home Wish Registry.

Bargain hunting? Check TJ Maxx and Marshall’s

I finished my Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve, with the exception of two gifts. Money, and the lack thereof, is a huge issue in my house this year as it is in many others. I think it’s going to be a long uphill road that we all travel before it gets better. I’ve been trying hard every day to spend less and spend smarter, and that especially applied to Christmas shopping. I had received $25 gift cards for both TJ Maxx and Marshalls and was hoping to be able to put them both to good use. Apprehensive about finding gifts for everyone in time for Christmas, I made my way out to the stores.

I went to Marshalls first. Even though the store is located only a couple of miles away and is in my town, I haven’t been there in about five years. On a couple of occasions in the past hubby had bought some jeans and/or sneakers for himself and told me the prices were decent. I was surprised by how many different kinds of things Marshalls carried. There was a lot of clothing - mens, womens, childrens and babies. I’d say the store was more than half clothing, although it also carried toys, perfumes and colognes, housewares, bedding and linens, shoes and bags. They even had a seasonal department containing Christmas and Hannukah decorations and gifts! I’d been thinking about getting a baby carrier (the kind you wear) for my sister in law. I’d seen them sold in other stores for almost $40 and Marshalls had them for $15.99. I saw nice Cross pens on sale for $9.99. My Dad loves a nice, quality pen so I knew I couldn’t go wrong there. I was surprised at how many brand names I saw in Marshalls. I was even more surprised at how much you could save on some of the items. The only part of my trip that I wasn’t thrilled about was that the store I went to was laid out in a giant square and I had to go around it a couple of times in order to find everything.

Next I went to TJ Maxx, a couple of miles in the other direction in the next town over. I thought the TJ Maxx appeared quite a bit more organized. TJ Maxx contained a similar mix of products to Marshalls but seemed to have more in the way of housewares and bath and body products. I could have easily spent my money in the housewares department but it wasn’t me I needed to shop for. I found a really nice selection of small gift items that were just right for those non-family member gifts that many people buy as gifts for people like teachers, bus drivers, professionals, etc.  I’d been debating getting a nice bag for my brother’s girlfriend.  I found a Liz Claiborne bag for $17.99 that I’d seen selling in an online store for almost $50.

According to a recent Roper Survey, nearly half (45 percent) of the shoppers surveyed plan to spend less on gifts this year. The Debt Diva, Clarky Davis, suggests the biggest way to make your money go further is to shop at offprice retailers such as TJ Maxx and Marshalls. I have three tips to offer. The most important is to know your budget and stick to it. Also, know your prices before buying. If you do your price comparisons and research before buying you’ll know if a sale price is a good price. Lastly, shop as early as possible. It means less stress because you’re buying at a leisurely pace and it will save you money. An excellent time to start shopping for next year is right now, as in today.

I’d actually thought that TJ Maxx and Marshalls were just stores that bought leftovers from other stores. I found out that their merchandise is all first quality merchandise that can be found in other stores. Their prices are low because the buyers can buy as needed or ahead and aren’t locked in to a specific purchasing volume. Their stock constantly changes, with most stores receiving multiple shipments each week.  If you’re looking to find a bargain for yourself or as a gift for someone else, take a look in TJ Maxx or Marshalls. You might be surprised at what you find.

How soon is too soon?

The day after Christmas means more than new things. It also means cleaning up and finding places to put the new things. Growing up my Dad always liked us to keep our Christmas gifts under the tree for a good week or so. We were never allowed to put our new things right away. I’m not sure why, I don’t remember if I ever asked or if I did and have forgotten the answer.

Here in my house we prefer to put things away as soon as possible. Our house isn’t that big and since the kids are going to play with the things anyway there’s no point in not putting them away. We try to find room for the new things. It’s gotten a bit harder as the years go by but we still manage. RB said this year before we put CJ’s things away he wants to go through all of the toys he’s already got and see what we can get rid of to Good Will or another charity. We’d rather keep toys that are being used rather then just keep storing stuff under the boys bed frames.

I was wondering today if more people preferred to put their gifts away or leave them by the tree for a while. How soon is too soon to put gifts away? How do you do it in your house?

Managing Christmas Day visits

Who visits multiple houses on Christmas? My Mom stops over both my house and LB1’s house on Christmas morning to watch her grandchildren open some gifts. Nana and Grandpa are good but they can’t be in two places at once. (Good thing all four children don’t live here and have kids or Nana and Grandpa would be running around so much they’d be skinny and looking like they used Fenterdren.)

So. Each year my brother and I have the opportunity to take turns picking if they want the early or the late morning shift (about 8-9:30 and 10-11:30). I gave up picking years ago and just go with whatever makes it easier for my Mom. If she gets enjoyment out of watching them open then we’ll wait if we can. TJ knows to wait patiently. CJ has always listened and not presented a problem. Until this year.

This is the year that CJ finally decided he didn’t want to be patient. He saw the presents and went crazy. He wanted so badly to open them that he sat cross legged in front of the tree and became very obstinate. I felt a little bad for finally having to scold him, at which point he went to his room feeling pretty bummed. All worked out and nothing was opened before their arrival. I was wondering how those of you that visit multiple family members on Christmas manage your schedule?

Cats and Christmas trees

Well, the treadmills been moved to the back porch and RB put the Christmas tree up. Both of the cats can be found under it regularly now, trying to see what they can get into. What is it about cats and Christmas trees? Every cat that I’ve ever had has tried to play with the low hanging ornaments and the bottom branches of the Christmas tree. One year we had a cat pull the tree over, which resulted in my husband tying every tree we’ve had since to a bracket on the wall.
