I’ll tell you a secret if you promise not to tell my son

I got the most awesome message when I got home this afternoon. RB took a phone call earlier in the day asking us if we could be present at a basketball awards ceremony in two weeks after the season is over because TJ is going to be presented with an award. He’ll be receiving the Rudy Award. I wasn’t home to ask specifically why TJ was chosen or what the qualifications are but I have heard of the award before and if I recall correctly it’s awarded for children making an effort to do their best to improve and succeed, more specifically for showing qualities including character, courage, commitment and contribution to the team. I’ve asked RB not to tell him because I’d like him to be surprised at the ceremony. I am so proud of him!

Practice is when?

TJ’s basketball season started this week. We got a voicemail message last Tuesday that his first practice was a last Wednesday at 8:30 pm. Yes, 8:30 pm on a school night. I was not happy. We went to the school mentioned in the message to discover that was not where the team was practicing. I finally got a chance to speak with the coach over the weekend and he said that many of our practices and games are at 8:30. I asked why and he said it’s because the kids were older. These kids are in seventh grade. I asked him if he realized that this meant our kids wouldn’t go to bed until between 10-11 pm on school nights and he said he did. I don’t think that’s right and I am going to say something to the Recreation department. I’m glad TJ gets a chance to play but I’d say that hour was too late on a school night for any child under 15. I don’t think it should start any later than 7:30-8 pm. I wouldn’t mind if it was a once in a while thing but a couple of times a week for a three months is too much. So let’s hear it. Am I wrong? How late is too late to participate in a recurring activity like basketball on a school night?
