Reading Is Fundamental - Help Save The RIF Program

reading is fundamental banner

I’ve always loved reading. I think reading is one of the most important things that a child can learn to do. That saying “reading is fundamental”? It’s true. Without the ability to read everything is limited - education, career and even financial matters. Everyone should learn how to read.

I recently learned that President Obama’s 2011 proposed budget cuts  funding for Reading is Fundamental - RIF is a longtime kids’ program that provides free books to millions of kids. RIF receives 80% of its funding from the government. Without federal funding, more than 4.4 million children and families will not receive free books or reading encouragement from RIF programs.

Currently, the organization is rallying parents, educators and the community with a ‘write your politician campaign’ on the internet - already thousands have offered their support. If you’d like to support this effort just go to http://www.rif.org and sign your name - that’s it!

The following is a statement from Carol H. Rasco, president and CEO, of Reading Is Fundamental:

“On February 1, President Obama released his proposed FY2011 budget which eliminates the funding for Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and its nationwide services. Without this federal funding, over 4.4 million children and families will not receive free books or reading encouragement from RIF programs at nearly 17,000 locations throughout the U.S.

“Unless Congress reinstates $25 million in funding for this program, RIF will not be able to distribute 15 million books annually to the nation’s children at greatest risk for academic failure. RIF programs in schools, community centers, hospitals, military bases, and other locations serving children from low-income families, children with disabilities, homeless children, and children without adequate access to libraries. The Inexpensive Book Distribution program is authorized under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (SEC.5451 Inexpensive Book Distribution Program for Reading Motivation) and is not funded through earmarks. It has been funded by Congress and six Administrations without interruption since 1975.

“Since its founding in 1966, RIF has played a critical role in improving literacy in this country by providing new, free books for children to keep and build home libraries. Access to books and the power of choice ignite children’s hunger for knowledge and a passion for learning. In addition, research has shown that children who have more access to books not only perform better academically, but also become productive individuals whose contributions help create strong communities. On behalf of RIF and its network of over 400,000 volunteers nationwide, I urge all Americans to contact their congressional representatives and ask them to reinstate funding for this vital program.”

Reading Is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF), founded in 1966, motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life. RIF’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to age 8. Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provided 4.4 million children with 15 million new, free books and literacy resources last year. For more information and to access reading resources, visit RIF’s website at www.rif.org.

Box Tops For Education - Help Your Child’s School Just By Shopping - With B&N Giveaway

box tops for education logo

There may be some of you that are not quite finished giving Christmas gifts yet, for one reason or another. Maybe you’re waiting for payday to come so you can do some online shopping before you see that friend you don’t see very often. Maybe you’re waiting for a loved one to return home. Maybe you’re not holiday shopping, maybe you’re just shopping for yourself, or an upcoming anniversary or birthday. No matter what the reason you’re shopping, why not let your shopping benefit your child’s school by shopping in the Box Tops Marketplace.

The Box Tops Marketplace program earns money for your child’s school cash every time you shop online at a participating store. There are more than 100 popular, well known stores participating in the program at this time, including stores like Dell, Victoria’s Secret, Target and Best Buy. All you need to do to participate is sign up for the program and choose what school you want to support. Products sold through the marketplace cost the same through the program as they would if you weren’t buying through the program. Program members are still eligible for sale prices, promotions and deals and members are also eligible for special sales and promotions just for Box Tops supporters. For those of you with children in different schools, no worries! You can have more than one school in your profile. If you don’t have children of your own you can still participate in the program and support the child of a friend or relative. A school can earn up to $20,000 a year through this program so you can see why this is a valuable program.

If you’re shopping the Box Tops Marketplace you’ll definitely want to look at their newest addition - the My Class Essentials registry. This registry is a registry created by a teacher and works similarly to a baby registry. Teachers can choose from over 6,000 student and classroom materials in 13 product categories, including:

* Skill builders such as flash cards
* Free-time reading books
* Lesson workbooks
* Motivating bulletin board sets for the classroom
* And much more!

Items purchased are sent directly to the teacher so they can start using their new supplies right away. If you wish you can also donate money to a classroom registry, which can then be used by the teacher to purchase registry items. This is great for teachers and the school because the teachers get what they need and the school gets 2% cash back  with every registry purchase.

Be sure to check out the Deals and Discounts Page or follow them on Twitter to receive a daily update.

So who wants some help with their shopping?

Words Move Me - Sony Reader Giveaway

words move me

What moves you?

The two things that move me the most are my children and knowledge. Knowledge takes many forms and my favorite form, by far, is the English language. That’s right - words. I love words. To me, words are interesting. They form knowledge. And you know the old saying - knowledge is power.

I’ve always loved words. The daughter of a 7th grade English teacher, I learned to read before I was 4 and have loved it ever since. As a teenager, when I was supposed to be delivering my newspaper route I
could be found sitting on a corner reading a book instead. Seriously. It was tough for my Mom to yell at me because I wasn’t getting into trouble - I was reading. You can’t get mad at someone for reading, right. Reading was my escape from everything back then. I could fall into a book and disappear for hours, not putting it down until I’d finished (or sometimes until it was too dark outside). To this day one of my favorite activities is to curl on on the couch with a book with a cup of coffee and read.

Sony has created Words Move Me to foster interest and interaction in words between readers all around the world. Readers can share their feelings via widgets. Other readers can search by emotions to find people with like interests. It’s pretty cool. My widget is below.

Sony and I are wondering what moves you. So let’s talk about that.

12 Days and 12 Facts for This Holiday Season

By Caroline Taggart,
Author of I Used to Know That: Stuff You Forgot From School

Ever catch yourself saying I Used to Know That?

Each holiday season brings another round of cocktail parties, family get-togethers, and corporate gatherings — and invariably, lots of small talk. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when discussing politics, literature, and other intellectual “stuff,” especially when what is thought to be general knowledge is often long-forgotten. Enter I Used to Know That: Stuff You Forgot From School. From English and Literature to Math and Science, from History and Geography to Religion and Other-Worldly Topics, this book leaves you equipped to handle any topic of conversation.

Here we’ve cherry-picked twelve fun facts for the holiday season — one for every day of Christmas (or whatever holiday you prefer!) Quiz yourself to see how much “stuff” you need to brush up on before hobnobbing with the boss or office crush.

1. On building sentences: Just what is a “clause”? (Not to be confused with Santa Claus.)

Answer: A clause contains a subject and a verb and may stand alone as a sentence or as part of a sentence (when it is often called asubordinate clause): Santa Claus loves cookies but can’t eat them without milk.

2. How many bones is the spine made up of?

Answer: 26 small bones called vertebrae (Be careful lifting all those heavy holiday boxes.)

3. Acclaimed author Charles Dickens (1812-70) wrote which Christmas classic?

Answer: A Christmas Carol. The miserly Ebenezer Scrooge tries to ignore Christmas and is haunted by the ghost of his former partner, Marley, and by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, who show him the error of his ways.

4. The fist chapter of this famous book opens with “Call me Ishmael.” Name the book and author. (Hint: it makes a whale of a gift!)

Answer: Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Melville is also the author of Pierre and the unfinished Billy Budd.

5. There’s a name for the process of watering your Christmas tree? Who knew?

Answer: Grab the kids and give them this science factoid as they nurture the family tree: Osmosis is a form of diffusion that is specific to the movement of water. Water moves through a selectively permeable membrane (that is, one that lets some types of molecules through but not others) from a place where there is a higher concentration of water to one where it is lower.

6. Can you name all 6 wives of Henry VIII, father of the Church of England?

Answer: (Listed in order) Catherine, Anne, Jane, Anne, Catherine, Catherine. They are often remembered as divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived. Sure makes you think twice when complaining about bad relatives.

7. Who was the 16th President of the United States?

Answer: Abraham Lincoln (R, 1861-65) and yes — he really was born in a log cabin on a winter’s day. Notably famous for many reasons including his Gettysburg Address: “Four Score and Seven Years ago our fathers brought fourth upon this continent a new nation conceived in Liberty . . . ”

8. ‘Tis the season to be jolly giving! Don’t forget to tip well this season — etiquette coaches will tell you that means no less than 18%. So just how much should you tip on a bill of $50?

Answer: Percent means by a hundred, so anything expressed as a percentage is a fraction (or part, if you prefer) of 100. So 18% is 18 parts of 100, or 18/100 or .18. If your bill is $50, multiply 50 by .18 to get your tip total of $9. If you’re feeling generous, a 20% tip would require you to multiply 50 by .20, for a total of $10.00

50.00 x .18 = 9.00

50.00 x .20 = 10.00

Percentages can also be holiday-relevant when it comes to figuring out in-store sales. In this case, you want to multiply by the inverse of the percentage listed. So if you have a $50 sweater that’s on sale for 25% off, multiply 50 by .75 for your total of $37.50. That same $50 sweater on sale for 40% off would equate to $30, or $50 multiplied by .60.

50.00 x .75 = 37.50

50.00 x .60 = 30.00

9. Brr, it’s cold outside. But just how cold does it have to be to get some snow around here?

Answer: Did you know that the freezing point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit? Keep an eye on the temperature and watch your footing for ice on the ground. (See previous fact about those treasured vertebrae!)

10. Everyone knows Santa and his elves live in the North Pole. But what about the South Pole (aka Antarctica)?

Answer: The South Pole was discovered by Roald Amundsen (1872-1928, Norwegian), who was also the first to sail though the Northwest passage, the sea route from Pacific to Atlantic along the north coast of North America. Antarctica is the only continent that contains no countries — instead, it is a stateless territory protected from exploitation by an international treaty. A good place for the elves to protest low wages?

11. Which Ocean is bigger: the Pacific or the Atlantic?

Answer: The Pacific Ocean is larger at 69,374 square miles — that’s almost double the Atlantic, which comes in at 35,665 square miles. Making it even more astonishing that St. Nick can cross the globe in just one night.

12. Remember the reason for the Season! Can you name a few things that both Judaism and Christianity have in common?

Answer: Both are monotheistic religions that share the first five books of the Christian Old Testament. Both religions view Jerusalem as a sacred site, the former for the Wailing Wall (contains the remains of the temple that was thought to be the place where God resides on earth) and the latter for Christ’s burial and resurrection site.

Happy Holidays to all!

Online Higher Education

RB’s still looking for work. As much as I love him I can’t help but wonder if things would be different if he had some higher education. It would be great if he could receive some specialized training or education when he finds a job so he could get into a career that there’s demand for. Take the IT field for example. I do see jobs in the field out there but he doesn’t have the know how. How can people get the know how if they’re busy working? One way is to go to school for it.

Lewis University offers an online MS in Information Security. The program offers a choice of two concentrations - managerial and technical. The managerial concentration gives the knowledge on why information security is important and the technical concentration gives the knowledge on how to make it happen. Lewis University is Regionally Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). I think with schools offering more online education options it will me more viable for people with busy schedules to further their education or get started.

What are your thoughts on online higher education?

My Dog Bites The English Teacher, Practical Grammar Made Quick and Easy - Book Review And Giveaway

my dog bites the english teacher book cover

My Dog Bites The English Teacher - Practical Grammar Made Quick and Easy
by Marian Anders
List $14.95
ISBN-10: 0979488419
ISBN-13: 9780979488412
Paperback, 224pp
Publisher: Aviary Publishers Incorporated

Does your writing need help? Do you use too many run ons? Are your sentences made up of just fragments? Do you overuse commas? My Mom, a retired English teacher) says I do. You don’t have to be in school to be concerned about good grammar. Grammar has the power to affect our professional success and personal relationships. My Dad once wrote my Mom a love letter. She corrected it in red ink and gave it back. He never wrote her a love letter again. There’s a no win situation. Marian Anders, a college English professor, felt that many people don’t understand correct grammar and that there needed to be an easier way to learn the basics. As a result, she authored My Dog Bites The English Teacher - Practical Grammar Made Quick and Easy.

From the publisher - This book is for people who want to improve their writing. Clear explanations and step-by-step directions show how to find and fix mistakes in writing such as fragments, commas, and others. Stick with the basics in the first five chapters, or read to the end and learn the intricacies of traditional grammar. This book shows writers how to identify and fix fragments, comma splices, run-ons, commas, apostrophes, and other common mistakes using a logical, step-by-step method that always works.

I found the book to be a fun and easy read. Her writing style is friendly. There’s no super technical jargon to confuse, it’s all explained in easy to understand wording with examples. There are exercises to practice scattered throughout the book to help you measure your progress. I particularly liked the chapter on case and agreement. It would make a terrific desk reference for anyone, especially students starting to write term papers. It would also be a great book for anyone rejoining the workplace or folks wanting to improve their writing skills. At under $15.00 this book is a great gift idea as well.

My Dog Bites The English Teacher - Practical Grammar Made Quick and Easy is available at bookstores nationwide and online.

Luvs Take A Stand Campaign And $5 Off Coupon Giveaway

luvs logo

Unless you’re new here you know that my son CJ is 10 and still has some potty issues. When we travel he usually wears a pull-up. Both of my boys grew up in Luvs diapers. CJ loved them because they had Blue’s Clues on them. I loved them because they were more affordable than the other diapers and worked great. Low price does not always mean low quality.

luvs take a stand coupon

Luvs is going to be offering a coupon for $5 off any Luvs product on September 15, 2009 as part of their Take A Stand campaign. The goal of this campaign is to empower folks to take a stand for things that are important to them, whether that be the price of diapers or something more personal. Marissa Jaret Winokur, Tony-Award-winning actress, Dancing With the Stars contestant, and host of Oxygen Network’s Dance Your Ass Off, is helping lead this campaign. If you visit the Luvs site you can watch videos of Marisa speaking about the things she takes a sand on. Plus you can join the community and share your own stories. There’s even a Baby Builder app that let’s you create your own avatar.

I don’t have a giveaway to offer you in this post. I put the word giveaway in the title to get your attention. It’s Luvs that’s giving something away (the $5 coupon). I can give you a piece of advice - you should take a stand for what you believe in, whether it be lower diaper prices or your child’s education.

My son CJ is ten and has been in our town’s school district for his whole life, beginning at the age of 3. Over the past two years we discovered that my son’s IEP had been broken several times. When we asked for things we were told that my son wouldn’t benefit. Here’s an example. CJ has severe speech delays. He’d gotten a minimal amount of signing in school and we asked for more many times. We were told he couldn’t manage learning sign and speech.

After much thought I decided that I wanted him taken out of the district. I wanted him to have the services he not only needed but also that he deserved. My Mom agreed immediately and RB wasn’t far behind. Of course the school didn’t want us to take him out of district - that costs more money. We stuck to our guns and looked at some other schools. The district even wanted us to look at schools where the people in charge consulted with the district. I turned those down and found the school I wanted him to go to. We fought for it and CJ started going to school there in July.

We have seen more progress in the last six weeks than we did in a very long time. We took a stand for what we believed our son needed and it is now paying off. He has been trying to talk more - we hear all sorts of words. He’s come home with a few new signs each week to accompany the words he’s trying so hard to say. I am so glad that he’s thriving there and that we took a stand. I have a special sign that I mentally give our school district every time CJ does things they said he couldn’t do. It involves giving the district a mental salute with one of my five fingers. Not ladylike I know but it’s how I feel.

I’d love to hear what you’ve taken a stand for. Please pretend this is a giveaway and leave me a comment telling me.

luvs thanks for taking a stand

Clorox College Survival Guide For 2009

clorox college survival guide 2009

I watched my neighbor pack up her oldest and send him off to college not long ago. I remember as a young student in college the uncertainty over everything. What about laundry? What about meals? Mom put me on a meal plan and laundry would be done at home on the weekends. I arrived at school on freshmen move in day only to develop a whole new list of worries. How should I decorate my room without looking childish to others? What would be the best way to organize my room? Did I have everything I needed in my room? What if I got sick? How would I ever manage with only a pay phone in the hall to use? My Mom assured me everything would be ok and that she was only a phone call away. That helped. For about an hour. I don’t really know how she fared once she left the campus.

The Clorox College Survival Guide 2009 is a free guide that contains tips, hints, information and advice provided by college students and their parents.

The guide is full of tips such as:

  • A “heads up” on the popular regional trends in clothing and accessories as well as activities that come along with going to school in the Midwest, the Northeast, the South, and the West Coast
  • Instructions for a “5-Minute Dorm Room Clean-Up”
  • Seasonal influenza and novel H1N1 2009 flu virus prevention tips
  • Dorm room “must-haves” for living away from home
  • Lifestyle tips from experienced Moms

Learn a little bit more about the guide in this brief video.

With flu season almost upon us and a growing concern for H1N1 I find the germ control tips most helpful. After all, germs are everywhere and college students will be sharing their space with strangers, which means they’ll be sharing space with their germs. I think it’s great that there is even a polite reminder on something that not everyone knows - the correct way to cover your cough. Hint, it’s not using your hand. I also think it’s neat that the guide offers information about regional trends, so students might feel more at ease in a new place away from home.

You can download the Clorox College Survival Guide 2009 national edition at www.momcentral.com/collegesurvivalguide2009.
There are also regional editions that you can find by visiting the College Survival Guide Facebook fan page, which you can find when you search “College Survival Guide 2009″ on Facebook. You can also become a fan of the College Survival Guide Facebook fan page.

“I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of The Clorox Company and received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.”

Do you spend more on groceries during the school year or during the summer? Many people spend more during the school year. It’s easy to see how. I’m talking about items like cereal, granola bars, waffles, yogurt, fruit snacks and such. And then there’s the dinner items and the gas. If you’re anything like me you do more running around during the school year, to things like sports, dances, playgroups, CCD and PTA meetings to name but a few. Those things require gas in your tank. Leap Frog Let’s Go To School DVD Review

Leap Frog Let’s Go To School

Own it on August 18

Run time - 35 minutes

Because he is developmentally delayed I’m always on the lookout for anything that will help CJ learn. I took the opportunity to review Leap Frog  Let’s Go To School hoping it would be something appropriate to use to hold his interest and help him with the basics.

Leap Frog Let’s Go To School is a DVD about the anticipation that many children feel concerning their first day of school. In the movie the twins Tad and Lily get worried about their upcoming first day after their older brother overwhelms them with a conversation about the big Day. They begin to think that they’re not prepared because after all, they don’t know their numbers and letters. Edison the firefly gives them a tour of a classroom, where they review counting, letters and sounds, the days of the week and animals.

I love that the DVD is close-captioned. The recommended age range on this DVD is 3-6 and I’d say that’s about right considering the age of children entering school could be about that wide. As far as CJ goes, I found the content was useful but rather than pausing to go over the letters I would have liked to see a slower pace in the classroom to keep things interactive.

Leap Frog Let’s Go To School is a DVD is available to purchase from LeapFrog.com for $14.98 as well as from other online stores.

Back To School - Organizational Tips From Avery With Giveaway

Earlier this month Avery Dennison Office Products announced its relationship with organizational expert Jodie Watson, founder and president of Supreme Organization and the organization expert from TLC’s “Real Simple. Real Life” television show. Watson shares her expertise in an effort to help kids prepare for back-to-school and stay organized for a more successful and productive year. Recently, Avery Dennison became the first and only school and office supply manufacturer to join Box Tops for Education® which helps parents and communities earn much-needed cash for schools.

“Organizing schoolwork and materials allows kids to organize their minds so they are better able to focus on their studies,” says Watson. “It also helps children to be less stressed. When they know where their work is and are able to find what they need when they need it, they don’t waste time and energy looking for lost or misplaced papers, and have more time to get their assignments done well and in a timely fashion.”

Jodie Watson’s Back to School Organizing Tips, by Grade

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

  • Create a binder to house the best of your child’s school work as they go through the school year. Use a template to create the front cover and spine of the binder with your child’s name, school, year, etc. Use dividers to make sections for homework, artwork, certificates of recognition, awards, projects, etc. Keep papers inside sheet protectors so the work will stay in good condition. Take pictures of any larger artwork or projects they make and place the photo in the binder. Photos can be printed as large as 10’x8” for best viewing. At the end of the school year, you will have a completed binder with all their best work.
  • Use permanent markers to write your child’s name and a contact number on their backpack & lunchbox in case they get lost or left at school.

3rd – 5th Grade

  • Place a dry erase calendar where you and your child can see and reach it. With a marker write down all the upcoming school dates for the year – school breaks, events, field trips. As you go through the year, use the calendar to track project due dates and help your child to schedule in the days they will be working on long term homework assignments in order to complete them on time. Calendar can also include play-dates, parties, doctor’s appointments, and sports or dance lessons. This is a great way to introduce your child to project management at an easy to understand level. If you have more than one child, use a different color marker for each one to easily differentiate between their schedules.

6th – 8th Grade

  • Help your child create a fully personalized, unique binder with Avery Signature Binders to organize their work for the upcoming school year. They could use one binder to hold all of their class work or individual binders for each class they will be taking. Use dividers to create separate sections for each course or class, such as: history, math, science, and/or create separate sections within each class, such as: notes, assignments, handouts, etc. Label each divider with a permanent marker or print labels on your computer so you can clearly see which section is which. Insert a copy of your child’s class schedule into a sheet protector and place at the front of the binder. For each class make a cover sheet with the class name, teacher, room number, location, days/times of classes. Place the class info cover sheets into sheet protectors and insert into the binder at the front of the section for that particular class.
  • Encourage your child to use a highlighter to empathize important content while taking class notes or on handouts. This will help them to find relevant content later on when they are studying.

Here are some of Watson’s helpful hints to prepare for back-to-school and get organized for a successful year with Avery Dennison school and office supplies.

  • Color-code and label prominently. Use different color binders for each subject and label the front cover and spine. Include a name and contact number in case the binder gets lost or left at school.
  • Place a dry erase monthly calendar in the study area at home. Use dry erase markers to note days/times of classes, and when assignments or papers are due. Use different color markers for each class to easily differentiate them.
  • Create a desktop file system in your study area at home. Color-code file folders for each subject to match the color-coding system in the binders. Make file folder labels on the computer or using a permanent marker so each folder can be easily identified.

“More than 600 Avery brand products will carry Box Tops coupons, including labels, binders, dividers, highlighters, glue sticks and more,” said Jeff deLeon, group product manager, Avery Dennison Office Products. “Students can get organized and ready for back-to-school while also earning cash for their schools by clipping and submitting the coupons.” In the 2008-2009 school year alone, US schools earned a record-breaking $50.6 million through Box Tops for Education. The cash will be used to fund valuable programs, and purchase supplies, equipment, uniforms and more.

Just In Time For School, Locks That Let You Lock It Up Your Way - Master Lock Sweepstakes Info Too

I stopped in the store yesterday and found that school supplies are for sale on the floor. There were some good prices but I can’t shop yet because I don’t have the list of supplies that TJ will need this year. It really aggravates me the school thinks it’s acceptable to not give us a list of supplies until a couple of days before school. By then the aisles are full of nothing but empty boxes and I can’t find what I’m looking for if they have it at all. Then I have to go to one of the office supply stores and pay twice as much.

TJ’s school has lockers with built in locks. Every year most of the kids have a hard time with the locks. I personally think it would make more sense and maybe even be a bit safer if they removed the locks and let the students bring in their own locks. The kids would probably feel better and have less problems opening their own lock and setting their own combination. Master Lock has introduced two new families of combination locks just in time for back to school - the 1500iD Speed Dial™ Set-Your-Own Combination Lock and the 1590D Set-Your-Own Combination Lock.

The Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock opens on up-down-left-right directional movements, instead of the traditional rotary dial, and can be customized with letters, shapes or numbers, depending on how students most easily remember their combination
The Set-Your-Own Combination Lock is a traditional rotary dial for students more comfortable with that method, but with a new reset feature that allows them to choose their own combination using, letters, numbers or both

I wish I’d been able to set my own combination when I was in school. Heck, even when I was in a bowling league I couldn’t remember the combination to my locker. Adults could use these locks too. Anyway. I got a heads up on a contest that Master Lock is holding, here’s the details.

Master Lock is also offering a solution for locking up secrets online with the introduction of the “Master Lock Secret Vault” Facebook application, featuring the new 1500iD Speed Dial Set-Your-Own Combination Lock. For Facebook users who have a juicy tidbit or fun photo they want to share with a select group of friends but not broadcast to their entire friends list, they can now install the application at www.facebook.masterlock.com and lock up their secrets in their own Secret Vault by creating a custom combination to share with only the friends they desire.

In addition, now through October 15, “Master Lock Secret Vault” users have a chance to win a $5,000 cash prize to help them secure their future in the “Master Lock $5,000 Secure Your Future Sweepstakes.” Whether users aspire to attend college, embark on a new business venture or simply pay their rent, Master Lock will help one lucky winner accomplish his or her future goals. To enter, entrants must meet the eligibility requirements.(1)

Your Baby Can Read Giveaway

I’m a great believer in the importance of learning to read. I was fortunate in that my Mom taught me how to read at a very early age. She was a teacher who knew it’s better to teach children to read as young as possible, rather then to let it wait until the child goes to school. She made reading fun, which made me enjoy it. As a teenager when I was supposed to be collecting money from customers on my newspaper route I could be found in quiet areas of the street, sitting on my bike and reading a book. I still love reading to this day.

The folks at Your Baby Can Read also feel the earlier you teach a child to read the better. Read a little about their product and the explanation on why it works. They’re so confident in their product that they’re willing to prove it to one of my readers. Stick around!

From “Your Baby Can Read! ®”

Learn What the Experts Already Know: Teaching Reading When Children Are Most Receptive Enriches Them In School And Life For Years To Come

San Diego, CA—June 16, 2009 – Guiding infants through early literacy skills is a natural, stimulating activity that strengthens the parent-child bond and encourages a life-long love of reading. Now parents can develop this exciting time in a child’s life to the fullest with the Deluxe Edition of the “Your Baby Can Read!” Program, offering a multi-sensory approach to early reading skills with a complete set of interrelated books, cards, activities and music, all of which work together to open up a new world of communication for even the youngest children.

The remarkable “Your Baby Can Read!” infant literacy program has been used by hundreds of thousands of babies around the world and changed the way many people view the needs and abilities of even the youngest children. This scientifically-based program builds on the fundamental principle that reading is a natural extension of a young child’s acquisition of spoken language, and that waiting until the age of five or six to learn to read misses a key developmental window in a baby’s life. The complex language-learning process happens at a specific time in a baby’s brain development, when even the youngest baby can easily absorb the visual aspects of language. Introducing basic reading at this critical time makes the whole process easier, more exciting and more interesting for the child. The amazing success of the “Your Baby Can Read!” program has literacy experts and early childhood educators worldwide changing the way they think about reading in young children.

There could be no better gift than the gift of reading, and the lifelong advantages that come with being confident and comfortable with those skills from an early age. The “Your Baby Can Read!” Deluxe Edition offers a comprehensive system of easy-to-use, interactive DVD’s, double-sided interactive sliding word and picture cards, lift-the-flap books, a helpful parents’ guide, a music CD and more. This multi-sensory approach, aimed at children from birth to 5 years, allows parents to get the most out of the “Your Baby Can Read!” program.

Used together or individually, each component of the Deluxe Edition offers a fresh and enjoyable activity. Children using the program eagerly learn new words and begin to associate reading with the warmth and excitement of playing with a loving parent or caregiver. Babies and toddlers also find comfort and stimulation in seeing child-friendly, colorful photographs and words that draw from familiar objects around the home—a hallmark of the “Your Baby Can Read!” program.

“Your Baby Can Read!” was developed by Dr. Robert Titzer, a prominent professor and infant researcher, after noticing the positive impact of early reading in his own infant children. A professor and teacher for over 15 years, Dr. Titzer has extensively researched early childhood learning and development, and his findings have been published in such prestigious journals as Psychological Review. His efforts to promote reading from birth to toddler years, at the same time children are learning the spoken word, has captured the interest of educators, researchers, parents, government agencies and the media worldwide.

For more information on “Your Baby Can Read!” please call 888-READ-888 or go to www.YourBabyCan.com.

Toddler Interpreter, A Parent’s Guide to Baby Sign Language for Hearing Babies and Toddlers - Book Review And Giveaway

At ten CJ’s vocabulary is still limited. He tries really hard and he really wants to talk but sometimes it isn’t easy to understand him. CJ has done some simple signing since he was about a year old. It’s at times like this that I wish we, and the school, had begun sign language much earlier. It is now my opinion that basic signing should be taught to all children when school begins. If everyone had some knowledge of basic sign language it would be easier for people with different abilities to communicate.

It’s become known that babies are receptive to learning sign language long before they can speak. I think it’s terrific that there are parents teaching their children signing early on. It’s not hard to get started, there are even books that will help you. One of these books is Toddler Interpreter, A Parent’s Guide to Baby Sign Language for Hearing Babies and Toddlers by Ian Creaser and Lisa Baade BSc, which I was invited to review.

Toddler Interpreter (ISBN: 978-0-646-50882-5) is a 120 page book that serves as an introduction to signing with your child. There are sections of the book explaining why signing is beneficial for you and your child, when and how to teach signing, and the stages of teaching from this book. The signs within the book are classified in five stages, with twelve signs in each stage.

I think the book is well suited for any parent wanting to introduce signs to their child. When I first glanced at the book I didn’t understand how or why the signs were classified in the stages that they’re in. It turns out that they’re listed this way because it fits well with the way psychologists feel children of this age learn. I really like that the book offers a simple, clear color picture of a sign being made as well as a brief written description of how to make it. I also appreciated the picture index of all signs at the back of the book, listed in alphabetical order for quick reference.

The book offers a number of reasons why you should use sign language with your child including facilitation of communication at a young age, bonding, improved social skills, stimulation of the mind and use of body language. Those are all valid reasons but I’d like to offer two more. One - If you wait for your child to develop and speak according to a typical timeline and they don’t then you’ve wasted a lot of precious time that you could have spent teaching and learning alternate communication skills. Two. The comprehension and use of simple signs is more than just a way for children to make themselves understood. It’s also a way for children to understand others who cannot communicate. Know what I’m saying?

For More Information on the book visit ToddlerInterpreter.com

One winner will receive a copy of The Toddler Interpreter.
