One Of The Things I Love About Mac - Screenshots

i love taking screen captures, or screenshots, on a Mac.

On my Windows computer to get a picture of something on a screen I had to go through several steps. First I’d have to do a screen capture, then I had to paste it into an app. Then I’d have to edit the screenshot to cut out everything but the image I wanted.

On a Mac I can get a screen capture or a screenshot with one step. If I press shift-command-3 the computer captures an image of my entire display and places it on my desktop. Here’s an example of my desktop with iTunes open.

itunes desktop screenshot

If I press shift-command-4 the computer gives me crosshairs, allowing me to select only the portion of the screen that I want a picture of, which in turn gets placed on the desktop. Here’s a picture of just a portion of the iTunes library contents, taken with one click.

Software Review - iolo Technologies System Mechanic

system mechanic box

My computer runs really slow, sometimes unbearably so. When I turned it on it would take between five and ten minutes to boot up and be ready to use. When I shut down it would take more than ten minutes to shut down, if it shut down at all. I’d get all kinds of messages when shutting down, about things quitting or not quitting. When I was offered the opportunity ti try iolo technologies System Mechanic I accepted, figuring I had nothing to lose. After all, I depend on my computer and need it working.

A recent report by the CMO Council’s Customer Experience Board found that 94% of consumers depend on their computer in their personal lives, and nearly two-thirds (62%) have a high level of dependency. Undoubtedly the computer is one of the most expensive and necessary product in our lives. However, 64% say their computer has caused them anguish or anxiety (the irony?). How can we keep the PC running the best condition without breaking the bank??

System Mechanic combines more than 40 robust tools enabling novices and experts alike to clean out their computers and keep them in peak condition. It’s four main functions are to:

  1. speed up your pc
  2. clean your pc
  3. fix your pc problems
  4. ensure your privacy

Speeding up your pc

iolo Labs researchers state that the top 5 causes of PC slowdowns and bottlenecks are:

  1. Hidden startup programs
  2. Registry errors and bloat
  3. Memory leaks and fragmentation

  • Accelerates PC startup 19 ways
  • Defrags & recovers orphaned RAM
  • Boosts internet speed
  • Complete low-level drive defrag
  • Turns off unused background programs

Cleaning your pc

iolo Labs researchers state that the top 3 ways clutter degrades performance are:

  1. Critical indexes Windows maintains to organize its files become bloated with meaningless junk, causing overall sluggishness during file and program access.
  2. Useless files are included when defragmenting your hard drives, adding to the time and processing power required.
  3. Hard drive space is unnecessarily reserved, leading to premature upgrade costs or replacements.

The steps System Mechanic takes to clean up Windows are:

  • Cleans over 50 different types of junk files
  • Removes invalid installers and programs
  • Wipes internet history, clutter and cache
  • Regains thousands of megabytes of hard disk space

  • Repairs and prevents corrupted drives
  • Fixes security vulnerabilities
  • Automatically maintains PC health with patent-pending ActiveCare®

Ensuring your privacy

iolo reminds us of the fact that virtually everything you do on a PC is stored in activity logs or leaves a trail, even long after it’s been “cleared.”

The steps System Mechanic takes to ensure your privacy include:

  • Employs multi-pass military-grade wiping to ensure complete removal of all deleted data
  • Defeats forensics recovery techniques
  • Permanently and completely removes internet history and cache
  • Integrates Incinerator® technology with Windows Recycle Bin for high security
  • Cleans up after all major web browsers, online chat, and web toolbars

System Mechanic is easy to install and easy to use. To install it you just place the cd into your computer and the installation should begin on its own. Once installed the first thing System Mechanic will do is scan your computer. This took about fifteen minutes on my computer.

system mechanic system scan

Once System Mechanic is finished analyzing your system it will tell you the health of your computer. Mine wasn’t great.

system mechanic quick scan results

Once your system status has been determined System Mechanic gets to work fixing the problems. What I liked about this is that I had the option of letting System Mechanic fix everything itself or letting me see each problem and choose to fix it myself.

system mechanic pc cleanup wizard

Once all of the problems were fixed I restarted the computer. I noticed that restart was much quicker - I was up and running in under two minutes. Shut downs have become faster as well, they take about two minutes and I don’t get the messages about programs quitting or not quitting anymore.

While my computer isn’t the fastest (it’s pretty old), it is running better than it has in some time. I have been running the computer for about two weeks now since installing and haven’t encountered any problems. I’d say this is a good software to pick up if you’re trying to speed up an old computer or if you want to clean up your system and don’t have the know how or time to do it manually.

System Mechanic is designed to work on Microsoft Windows Vista, XP, and 2003 Server operating systems and has been tested to work on the latest releases of Windows 7. System Mechanic is both 64-bit and 32-bit compatible. iolo System Mechanic may be installed on up to three pcs. It can be purchased online. It’s regular price is $49.95 and it is currently on sale for $39.95.

Get A Year OF Free Hosting From DotEasy

doteasy logo

When I started blogging years ago I tried a number of free blogging platforms including blogger, blogspot and wordpress. It didn’t take me long to realize that I wanted to make my blog truly my own, not somethingsomething.com. So I bought my first domain. Not long after that I heard horror stories from bloggers whose blogs were hosted on other people’s subdomains. One or two lost their entire blog because their “host” didn’t like something the blogger had written. Now you may be thinking that couldn’t happen to you. It might not. The friend or relative that hosts your blog may not have a nefarious plan. It’s possible that, like everything else in life, stuff could just happen. They could have a tech problem, making your blog unavailable. Yep, when theirs is down, so is yours. They could have a financial issue and be shut off. No matter why you blog or what you blog about, one of the biggest pieces of advice I can give you is to take control - buy your own domain and get your own hosting.

DotEasy is a company that I have not personally done business with but one have heard of many times. If you’ve been thinking about setting up your own little space in the blogosphere you may want to check this out. Right now DotEasy is offering a special – purchase any .COM/.NET/.ORG domain registration for only $7.95 and can get one year $0 free web hosting service. To take advantage of this offer just use coupon code 1003BPM.

This Basic package is a great deal for those of you wanting to get your feet wet with your own hosted blog, or perhaps you have a small business that you want to put a site up for.  The package offers 1000mb of storage and 1 gb transfer. It offers up the ability to host up to 10 domains, as well as the ability to have up to 10 email addresses. Should you find the need to upgrade, there’s no worry about the next package up costing an arm and a leg, it’s quite affordable.

Deal Alert For iPod And iPhone Users - iConnect Media Keyboard

buycom lifeworks iconnect media keyboard

How many things do you have on your desk, connecting to your computer? We all have an iPod in our house so at any given time there is an iPod charging, sitting next to my desk chair. Today I saw a really neat keyboard, made especially for iPod and iPhone users - the LifeWorks iConnect Media Keyboard.

The LifeWorks iConnect Media Keyboard works on computers operating with Mac OS X 10.6 or later, Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 operating systems. It has a built in dock that accommodates many models of the iPod and iPhone. When your iPod is in the dock you can control it using the keyboard. When it’s not in the dock the dock has a cover that slides shut. The keyboard has a numeric keypad and two built in USB ports on the right side. What I like best physically about this keyboard is that it has a built in rubberized wrist rest. As far as features go the ones I like the best are that your iPod syncs when placed in the dock and that the keyboard media keys allow for quick and easy navigation of your iPod music and files.

The LifeWorks IH-K230MB iConnect Media Keyboard is on sale for $49.99, a big discount from it’s retail price of $169.99. It also qualifies for free shipping.

Deal Alert - Dragon Naturally Speaking

dragon naturally speaking software

Something I have seen a lot about and always wanted to try was dictation and voice recognition software. Today I found a great deal on Dragon Naturally Speaking Standard 10.0 over at Buy.com. In case you don’t know about Dragon Naturally Speaking, here it is in a nutsell. Let’s say you have a lot of information you need to type. You’d speak into the microphone and what you said would be converted into text on your computer in front of you. It’s about three times faster than typing the information in yourself. You can use it in most popular applications as well as to move around in your computer and when browsing the internet. It will even format some of the data for you!

I was fully prepared to purchase this until I checked the system requirements. Unfortunately for me, my computer won’t run it because it has an old non-Intel processor. Boy do I need a new computer! Anyway. To run this software you need a computer with an Intel Pentium 1 GHz or AMD processor running Windows Server 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (32 bit), Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (32-bit). The computer needs to have 512mb of memory (1gb for Vista), 1gb (2gb for localized non-English versions) free on the hard drive, a DVD-rom drive and a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 or equivalent sound card supporting 16-bit recording . The package comes with the Dragon NaturallySpeaking v.10.0 Standard software and a Noise-canceling headset microphone.

Dragon Naturally Speaking is on sale for $39.99! That’s a 62% discount from its usual $99.99 price, plus it’s eligible for free shipping. At that price you can’t go wrong!

Not Happy With Your Ear Buds?

buycom qelectronics earbuds

Every member of our family has an iPod. Something we all agree upon is that the ear buds that come with the iPhone stink. You know, those little roundish white ones? They are not comfortable to wear and the sound quality is not what I would call exceptional. TJ recently told me he wanted to get a pair of in ear ear buds for when he’s on the bus or exercising, partially for sound quality and partially because the originals don’t stay in his ears. I started for looking for something reasonable.

I didn’t have to look far before I found a good prospect on sale at Buy.com. These ear buds come with three different sized ear tips, so you can get a fit you’re happy with. If you’ve ever tried in ear ear buds then you know the better the fit the better the sound. That’s part of what keeps background noise out. These come on a one meter long PVC cord. The only thing they don’t come with that would be helpful is a small case but for this price I could do without a case.

The Q:Electronics Noise-isolating Ear Buds regularly sell for $14.99. They are currently selling for $5.99, and are eligible for free shipping. They’re available in black and silver.

Deal Alert On 8GB Micro SDHC Card With Adapters And USB Reader

buy micro sdhc card reader

Tech and media items are getting smaller and smaller every day, while their capabilities are getting larger. Take removable media, for example. In the beginning there were only one or two types, including compact flash. As the technology and need evolved, more types of cards were introduced including SD, microSD and microSDHC. Are we supposed to have a different reader for each? Are we supposed to buy new media each time we upgrade our camera? Not necessarily.

Thanks to items like this Kingston 8GB Micro SDHC Card with Adapters and USB Reader, one card can now work with many different devices. This package combines a single card with dual adapters and a USB card reader, making it the perfect accessory. It’s versatility makes it ideal to share between devices including digital cameras, laptops, mobile phones and more. It even comes with a keychain, so you can always have it ready to use.

Buy.com has the Kingston 8GB Micro SDHC Card with Adapters and USB Reader on sale for $19.83, a 50% discount from it’s usual $40 sell price. It’s also eligible for free shipping.

AntiVirus Deal Alert

trend micro antivirus box

Recently the anti-virus trial on TJ’s computer expired. At the same time my anti-virus started behaving strangely. He is 14 and I am all over the internet, so we cannot risk the chance of going without anti-virus protection. I ran ean errand in a local store for baby wipes and vitamins. While dashing through the  store I noticed Trend Micro AntiVirus Plus AntiSpyware 2010 for $29.99, what I thought was a good price at the time. I made a mental note to return and pick it up over the weekend, when I had more time and more money on me.

That evening, I happened to be on the Buy.com sale page. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the exact same software for much less - only $11.99! It usually sells for up to $39.99, and it also comes with free shipping so that makes it a great deal.

Trend Micro AntiVirus Plus AntiSpyware is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7. It can help protect you from viruses, worms, Trojan horse programs and spyware in your email, webmail, instant messages and files. It will also help manage and clean cookies and temporary file. Your computer can be scanned on demand or you can schedule a scan. Automatic updates are available for the software.

This is a great option for anyone on a tight budget who needs to protect their computer.

HP Virtual Focus Group - Document Scanning

If you recall. I’m a member of a virtual focus group for HP. As such I am doing side by side comparisons of both an HP Photosmart C6380 and the Kodak ESP 7.

Scanning. Lots of people may not have a scanner or an all in one and may think they have no need for a scanner. I promise you, there are lots of things you can scan. We suffer from document overload, both in this house and as a society. One of the ways I thought I could help get organized is to get rid of the paper. Now some paper you just can’t get rid of. So why not scan it? That way you still have it but you don’t have the paper. Plus side? Scanned documents don’t rip or fade, and they take up a lot less room then paper does.

Here’s the HP Photosmart C6380.

hp scanner lid open

Now here’s a look at the Kodak ESP 7.

kodak scanner lid open

Much like the printers, the scanner lid on the Kodak is larger and heavier than the HP. The scanning area is the same - 8.5 x 11.7 inches.

Quality wise I found both sets of scans to be very comparable, no clear winner there. The winner came with the actual scanning process itself.

Scanning through the Kodak takes place from the front of the scanner or using the Kodak AiO Home Center software. If you’re scanning five pages you will wind up with five files. Each scan you will have to choose where to save to and what to call it. Now get this. The prompt on the screen gave me the impression that one folder would be created and each paper would get a different number. That didn’t happen. I scanned all pages into the same folder, on my desktop. When I looked into the folder, only one scan was there. Why? Because instead of the pages getting names with the numbers they apparently all got named the same thing, overwriting each other.

Scanning through the HP takes place from the front of the scanner or using the HP Solution Center software. Here the HP blew the Kodak out of the water. I had the same five pages. The HP allows you to scan one page and then gives you the ability to add more pages to that same file. What a time saver over the Kodak! Plus the other feature I really liked is that I could chose what format file I scanned into - document to pdf, email or tif image.

Stay tuned. The next installment will be on copying.

HP Virtual Focus Group - Printing From Memory Cards

Talking about the HP Virtual Focus Group again. The two models of printers are the HP Photosmart C6380 and the Kodak ESP 7. This time I’m talking about printing photos from removable media such as SD and CF cards.

I have printed photos for a long time, even before printers were meant to print photos. I used to print photos just on regular printer paper. Did you ever try that? They look good for like a week, then they start looking faded and old. Anyway. There have been many times I took a picture using my digital camera and didn’t have the computer on but wanted a photo. It was a real time suck to have to turn on the computer, upload the photos and then print. One of the things that interested me the most about both of these printers is that both allowed printing direct from a  memory card, bypassing the need to turn on the computer and upload pictures before printing.

hp photosmart front ports

The HP Photosmart 6380 has four ports on the front:

  1. MS
  2. SD, XD
  3. CF
  4. USB

kodak front ports

The Kodak ESP 7 has three ports:

  1. MS, SD, XD
  2. CF
  3. USB

The ports are all easily accessible on both printers. I printed pictures from an SD card.

On the HP after inserting the SD card you choose navigate the pictures using the arrow keys. Thumbnail sized images are shown four at a time on the screen. The colors of the thumbnails are very good and the images look clear. Once you choose what you want to print you choose the layout and size of the paper and if you want the date stamp on and then print.

On the Kodak after inserting the SD card you navigate the pictures using the arrow keys as well. One picture at a time is visible on the screen. The thumbnails on the screen are very blurry and pixelated and the colors look really dark. Once you choose what you want to print you can choose the layout, balance, color, quality and if you want the date stamp on and then print. It’s hard to tell what you’re looking at when you look at the thumbnails on the Kodak. In the end I had to upload the pictures to the computer just to see what I had before printing.

For ease of use I have to choose the HP over the Kodak, simply because of the poor thumbnail image quality. As far as the print quality between the two printers, the pictures were similar but always seemed a little brighter on the HP.

Check back soon,  next time I’ll be looking at document scanning.

HP Virtual Focus Group - Printing Documents

Talking about the HP Virtual Focus Group again. The two models of printers are the HP Photosmart C6380 and the Kodak ESP 7. This time I’m comparing printing documents from both of the printers.

The HP prints up to 34 pages per minute in black and up to 30 pages per minute in color. The Kodak prints up to 32 pages per minute in black and up to 30 pages per minute in color.

It looks like both printers can print on numerous types of paper including:

  • Plain paper
  • Legal paper
  • Cards
  • Envelopes
  • Transparency film
  • Labels
  • 5 x 7 inch Photo paper
  • 4 x 6 inch Photo paper
  • 8.5 x 11 inch Photo paper

Both printers were fast, the HP very marginally faster. Print after print I found two HUGE differences between the printers. The Kodak prints lighter than the HP. In side by side document comparisons the same document when printed on the Kodak was lighter than the same printed on the HP. This became especially obvious when printing papers with watermarks. The watermark was almost invisible when printed on the Kodak.

The other thing I found is that the Kodak is very noisy, to the point of annoyance. Here’s video of the sound when printing from each.

First the HP.

Then the Kodak.

Stay tuned. Next time I’ll be covering photo printing.

HP Virtual Focus Group - Installing The Printers

The first thing I had to do as a member of the HP Virtual Focus Group was get the printers installed.  The two models of printers being compared in this six week side by side test are the HP Photosmart C6380 and the Kodak ESP 7.

Here’s the HP Photosmart C6380.

hp test print

Now here’s a look at the Kodak ESP 7.

kodak test print

Both of the printers were easy to set up. Neither required any more documentation or reading then the included quick start cards. I chose to connect both printers using the WiFi feature, something I didn’t have with my previous printer. In setting up the wireless network there was a step where information needed to be input. It was easier and more convenient on the Kodak, because the Kodak offered the entire keyboard on one screen (numbers and letters), as opposed to offering letters on one screen and numbers on another like the HP.

Once installed I printed the test pages as recommended. At this point I discovered I had a bad color ink cartridge for the Kodak, which I had to replace immediately as it wasn’t printing 2 entire colors. Once I got another cartridge into the Kodak I found the the test pages were comparable but the ones from the Kodak seemed lighter.

Stay tuned. The next installment will be on printing documents.

HP Virtual Focus Group - Unpacking

hp virtual focus group binder cover

I was given the awesome opportunity to take place in a virtual focus group for HP. The members of the group were asked to use two comparable all-in-one inkjet printers identically for six weeks and at the end decide which we liked best. The two models of printers are the HP Photosmart C6380 and the Kodak ESP 7.

Three huge boxes were delivered. Why three you ask? One was for the HP printer, one was for the Kodak printer and one was full of printing supplies and paper. After completing my dance of joy it was time to open them up.

Here’s the HP Photosmart C6380.

The Kodak is larger and heavier than the HP. Both arrived well packed. Both came with a clear and concise quick start sheet of instructions as well as a big book. I chose to use the quick start directions. Both of the printers were easy to put together. The HP was easy to get out of the box and I was easily able to find and unfasten all of the pieces of tape that hold it still in the box. The Kodak did have a few pieces of tape that were challenging to get at and one that I completely missed on my first pass. Appearance wise the family was divided. TJ liked the look of the Kodak because it’s black. I like the Kodak’s black color as well because it may hide wear better. On the other hand it will show fingerprints much more than the HP.  I liked the design of the HP because it’s buttons are easily visible from the chair at the desk.

Stay tuned. The next installment will be on set up and installation.

Deal Alert - USB Graphics Tablet

buycom penpower tooya usb graphics tablet

TJ’s been getting into drawing again lately. He used to draw all the time as a young child and stopped for a while. He’s given me several beautifully done freehand drawings. In order to keep them I told him I was going to scan them into the computer. He seemed pleased and left the room with about another twenty sheets of plain paper. That got me to wondering if he continued to draw if he might enjoy a graphics tablet. I haven’t priced those in a while so did a little looking around and found one on sale on Buy.com today.

The Penpower Tooya Pro USB Graphics Tablet has some terrific features that make it a really great value. It is cross platform (works on Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Mac 10.4 above). It’s generously sized, with an active area of 10″ x 6.25″.  While having a large active area, it’s also thin enough at 5mm high that it would fit into a laptop bag very well. The tablet can be used for drawing, tracing and writing, as well as as a mousepad. The tablet comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements photo editing software.

A tablet like this might allow him to take his drawing to another level if he chooses. I think it’d even let him have some more fun and get even more creative, as well as enable the drawings to easily be kept in electronic format.

The Penpower Tooya Pro USB Graphics Tablet regularly retails for $149.95. It’s currently on sale for $89.99 and has a $30.00 rebate offer through the end of this year. It also qualifies for free shipping.

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE - MUST HAVES - Belkin Flythru Laptop Case

GIFT IDEA -BELKIN FLYTHRU LAPTOP CASE

Anyone that hasn’t traveled with my Mom doesn’t know the exquisite pleasure of almost missing a flight because everyone’s bags were being painstakingly gone through looking for drugs. A baggie of laundry detergent can look a lot like drugs I guess. Any luggage or bags that would end the humiliation inspection more quickly is a must have in my opinion, which is why the Belkin Flythru Laptop Case is a must have.

About the Belkin Flythru Laptop Case

Things are getting easier at the airport-with Belkin’s FlyThru, you no longer need to take your laptop out of the bag in the security line. This revolutionary new bag isolates your laptop on one side, and the clear window makes it easy for TSA agents to identify it. Just unzip the bag and lay it flat. Keep your other personal belongings away from the laptop and you should get the all clear. Enjoy your flight!

Mom was flying out to the West Coast this morning with my brother.  She was bringing her laptop. Mom travels with a scooter and can’t juggle things well. It somehow comforted me knowing that she’d have less to juggle and take apart because she was traveling with her laptop in this case. The bag unzips in half to reveal a clear window over the laptop so that compartment can easily go through the xray scanner. The case has a lifetime warranty and will accommodate most standard and widescreen laptops up to 15.6″. I would like to see the case available in a size that could accommodate a 17″ laptop.

The Belkin FlyThru Laptop Case retails for $59.99 and can be purchased online and in select retail locations nationwide.
