DEAL ALERT - Wagner Wide Shot Power Painter

buycom wagner power painter

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while you might know that RB spent some time (about ten years) as a painter. You know what they say about the plunmber’s toilet, right? It’s the same with the painter’s house. It takes forever for me to get something painted. It’s not that I wouldn’t paint it myself, it’s that I’ve been told not to paint because I apparently don’t do it well. I’ve at times wondered if my painting skills would improve if I tried it using something like a Wagner Power Painter.

I found what looks like a great deal on a sale on a Wagner 5.4 GPH Wide Shot Power Painter. It regularly sells for $99.99 and is currently $39.99 and qualifies for free shipping. That’s some nice savings! It comes with angled suction tube, cleaning agent and brush, dual hose fitting , 6 foot remote suction hose, extra atomizer, paint cup, extra spray tip, container clip and carry case.

This looks like it would be great those of us that are no good with a paint roller. The wide shop tip allows spraying paint up to 12 inches wide. It can spray oil or latex paints. What’s neat is that it says it can draw it’s paint supply right from the can for larger jobs, as opposed to having to use the attached container which would be better for smaller jobs.

I’ve never used one of these but I’m told they’re easy to use. I’m curious if any of you have used one, how was it? Was it easy to use? leave a comment, I’d love to hear from you on this. I’d be happy to get one if it would do the job well, because it would beat waiting for the painter to show up.

DEAL ALERT - Logitech Computer Stereo Speakers

buycom logitech z520 speakers

I’ve mentioned it before and it bears mentioning again. We love music in our house. We have music in almost every room in our house, in one form or another - stereos, ipod speakers, portable radios. You just can’t have enough music. When I first got my computer I picked up a cheap pair of no name speakers for like $6. The sound isn’t great but it was what was in the budet at the time. I’ve wanted a better pair for a while but just didn’t have the money. I found a pair of Logitech Z520 Speakers at a great price today that folks looking for good speakers will want to look at.

These speakers sure do look impressive. They work on both Windows and Mac computers, have 26 watts of power and are powered by an ac adapter. Not only do they plug into your computer but they also have an input to plus in an iPod. They’re designed with omnidirectional 360-degree sound, so your music sounds good from all angles. Did you ever hear music from some of the really cheap speakers? You can’t hear it everywhere, you can’t get much volume and it just sounds bad. Wish I’d found this deal when I was shopping for computer speakers!

The Logitech Z520 Stereo Speakers regularly sell for $149.99 and are currently on sale for $109.99. That’s a deal but it gets better. There’s a $60 rebate, bringing the final price down to $49.99. That’s a huge savings! And they qualify for free shipping too.

I’m sure lots of you love music. Who’s your favorite band?

DEAL ALERT - 50 Pack Of Memorex Double Layer DVDs

buycom memorex dvd spindle

Computer media has come a long way. I remember when I started in computer sales over a dozen years ago the floppy disk was the only media available. From there the consumer industry moved to zip disks and then CDs. Today more and more people are choosing to store all of their files on DVD. As more people start playing with video larger storage is needed for the sometimes massive files. DVDs aren’t just for video. Many of our cameras temporarily store pictures on small memory cards including CompactFlash and Secure Digital, among others. If you take a lot of pictures like my family that could take up your entire hard drive in no time, which is why you would move them onto removable media also. Software and technology has come far enough that now we can play slideshows of our pictures on our televisions, and even make our own movies.

As widely used as they have become and much as their price has dropped, DVDs can still be a little pricey however. I found a nice deal for a Memorex 50 pack of Double-Layer DVDs. Each of these DVDs can store up to 8.5 GB and play approximately 240 minutes of video. This 50 pack of DVDs is currently on sale for $27.99. As it usually sells for $27.99 and is eligible for free shipping. That’s a nice savings!

DEAL ALERT - Black Wii Accessories

buycom black wii accessories

We’ve had our Wii for a while. It’s the original white one. Appearance wise I much prefer the newer black one. Wii availability has finally loosened up a lot. It doesn’t come with everything though, and buying Wii accessories can really add up.

Not long after getting our Wii we realized that we wanted to have more players, and needed an additional remote.  Sure, for many of the games you can share the remote. We shared the remote for a while. It’s just so much easier when there are two, so that each player has their own instead of rushing to pass one back and forth between turns. Plus, with more than one remote you can have players play at the same time against each other.

If you happen to be looking for an additional black controller and/or Nunchuck I found a deal you’ll want to check out. The bundle I found is a Remote And Nunchuk Combo. It contains one black Wii Remote (batteries sold separately) and one black Wii Nunchuck. These are Bluetooth enabled and compatible with all Wii games. The items added together would usually cost $44.99, but the bundle is currently on sale for $26.99. There is also currently a $2.00 off online coupon and the bundle ships for free.

Liberty Science Center Facing Mars Exhibition

Facing Mars
If you could leave your family, friends, and familiar surroundings behind to risk your life on a three-year, round-trip voyage to Mars, would you go? In the new Facing Mars exhibition on view at Liberty Science Center from June 5 - September 6, you’ll have the chance to answer this question twice: once as you enter the exhibition and again as you exit with all the facts.

Facing Mars isn’t just about visiting another planet – it’s about determining whether we have the ingenuity to solve the challenges of deep space travel. Guests can experiment with 28 outstanding hands-on and full-body experiences.

Guests will:

* fly over the Martian surface and see real hi-def satellite images of the Red Planet
* examine psychological profiles to build a flight team that won’t quarrel or mutiny
* see how to grow food in space (hope you love veggies!)
* try out a special harness and walking surface to experience Martian “low gravity,” where everyone can “take a giant leap” with each step
* see a rare Mars meteorite
* check out before and after photos of your face in microgravity
* learn that in space, there’s no 911. Could you handle any emergency that came up, from electrical problems to emergency surgery?
* take a whirl in the spinning chair then try to solve a simple puzzle
* try to perform simple manual tasks in a low air pressure environment

After enjoying this challenging and thought-provoking exhibition, guests have the chance to answer the question again would they fly to Mars? Why or why not? They may find themselves considering the question more carefully!

Facing Mars was created by the Ontario Science Centre in consultation with leading experts in the field of space exploration.

Give Your Toddler a Job by Wendy Toone

iStock_000000663880XSmall.jpg

What can often be a parents’ worst nightmare?? A long wait in a waiting room or lobby with an active toddler or two. Does the thought of sitting in a small, stifling lobby or waiting with youngsters in tow make you cringe? If you’re like me, one giant question races through the mind: How am I going to occupy my children so they aren’t consumed with boredom which results in their running around or squabbling with each other? In my previous article I reviewed a few gross motor exercises you can do to make waiting time go by. In this article, I’ll share with you some fine motor exercises that work for me.

1. Fingers. Finger songs are great waiting games. “Itsy Bitsy Spider”, “10 Little Indians”, “Where is Thumbkin?” are all fun songs for kids. If it’s a quiet room you’re waiting in, whisper singing brings a new twist to the songs. Don’t worry - Paula and Simon won’t be judging you. You’re a parent; you can get away with it. Don’t forget about “Twinkle Little Star”, which is a natural progression to practicing one’s “ABC’s”……weird how they’re the same tune, huh? If you’re really on a roll and there are others waiting with you, earn a gold star by getting everyone to do a rousing chorus of “The Wheels On the Bus”. Party on!!

2. Toes. Yep, wiggling fingers counts as fine motor, but so does the wiggling of toes. Harkening back to the ballet lessons of my childhood, I remember learning “flex” and “point”. Of course, all ballerinas are supposed to point their toes. But it takes muscle control to make little feet point down and flex up to the sky. Have your child sit down and extend their legs in front of them. Using imagery such as lighting a candle (flex their feet), blowing out the candle (point their toes), can sometimes teach the concept to very young children.

3. Carry a scarf with you. Not only can you accessorize at a moment’s notice (fabulous, dahling!), but you’ll be amazed how you can occupy yourself and your child. Smooth it out and teach shapes…. it’s a square…. take one corner and fold it into a triangle…. can you make a rectangle? You can be silly, too. Be a ghost by putting it over your child’s head. Turn him/her into Little Red Riding Hood. Tell the story if they’ve never heard it. (Don’t forget to use funny voices to really hold their attention.) Use your imagination, and your child’s imagination. And encourage them to manipulate the scarf to really get those fine muscle groups working.

So the next time you and your child are waiting, don’t let boredom get the best of you. Don’t worry about your child getting out of control. Use the time to develop your child’s fine motor skills, and watch how the time quickly goes by. I am often asked a question that sounds like this, “Other than fine motor and gross motor exercises, is there anything else I can do to pass the time with my child while waiting anywhere?” Do you know the answer? Hint - I Spy, children’s digital picture books. See you in “Give Your Toddler A Job” - Part 3!

AVERY DENNISON CELEBRATES TEACHERS With A NATIONAL SWEEPSTAKES

Teacher Appreciation Sweepstakes is One of Several Ways Avery Dennison Office Products Supports U.S. Schools and Their Teachers

BREA, Calif., (July 21, 2010) – Avery Dennison Office Products Company (“Avery Dennison”), a business unit of Avery Dennison Corporation, is launching a national sweepstakes to reward deserving teachers nationwide. The sweepstakes, which runs through September 15, 2010, was created to celebrate teachers and all they do for our nations’ children on a daily basis.

Due to budget cuts and the current economic climate, many teachers and students across the country go without even the most basic school supplies. Studies by the non-profit organization, World Vision, show that teachers spend on average at least $500 of their own money each school year on supplies for their students. This sweepstakes aims to alleviate some of this financial burden, as well as pamper a few lucky teachers.

Avery Dennison will be giving away a grand prize package valued at $1,000 to one teacher through the sweepstakes hosted at: www.avery.com/teachersweeps. Teachers are encouraged to submit as many entries as they would like (up to one a day) between now and September 15, 2010, and also will be eligible to win additional second and third place prizes. Prize packages include an array of Avery-brand school supply products, Spa Finder gift cards and/or Starbucks gift cards.

“Avery Dennison wants to show our appreciation for all the hard work that teachers do every single day, and what better way to say thank you than awarding prizes that can help organize, pamper and yes, even caffeinate them,” said Jeff Deleon, director of marketing, Education, for Avery Dennison Office Products. “One of our core beliefs is that education is the cornerstone of a strong community, so we support the teachers who nurture students and enable their success.”

Avery Dennison has a long-history of supporting education. This announcement comes on the heels of its parent, Avery Dennison Corporation, launching the Give Back to Schools program in late June. Created as a way to give back to the communities that have made the company’s success possible in its 75th anniversary year, Give Back to Schools will provide 10 deserving U.S. schools with a truck-load of Avery-brand school supplies, valued at approximately $10,000 each. For Official Rules and to enter to win, students, families and supporters (ages 18 and older) can vote for their local K-8 school now through August 31 at http://www.AveryDennisonGiveBacktoSchools.com.

In 2009, Avery Dennison joined the Box Tops for Education® program, which helps parents and communities earn much-needed cash for schools. Avery Dennison is the only school and office supply manufacturer participating in the program, and currently offers Box Tops coupons on more than 1,000 school and office supply products, such as Avery® Durable and Heavy Duty binders, Index Maker® dividers, Avery® NoteTabs™, Label Pads, sheet protectors, address and shipping labels, Hi-Liter® highlighters, Marks-A-Lot® dry erase and permanent markers, Avery® glue sticks, name badges, and T-shirt transfers.

The cash earned by schools through Box Tops for Education can be used in many ways, such as helping to rebuild playgrounds, funding under-budgeted programs, or purchasing classroom equipment, library books, computers and other much-needed supplies. For more information on Avery Dennison’s participation in the program, visit www.avery.com/btfe and www.btfe.com.

Avery Dennison Offers Even More Chances to For Teachers to Win

In addition to the web-based sweepstakes for teachers and schools, Avery Dennison also is partnering with Box Tops for Education to help teachers earn up to 25 Bonus Box Tops for their participating schools. Now through September 15, teachers can submit a copy of their official school supply list to General Mills, listing one of more than 1,000 specially marked Avery brand school and office supply products, for a chance to win 10,000 Bonus Box Tops for their school. Schools are limited to 10 classroom supply list entries. Please visit www.avery.com/btfe and www.btfe.com for rules and regulations, and to view a school supply list example from Avery Dennison.

About Box Tops for Education

America’s schools have earned more than $300 million through Box Tops for Education since the program started in 1996. Thousands of schools have used that cash to purchase items such as computers, library books, art supplies and playground equipment. Schools can earn up to $80,000 per year to spend on anything they choose, by clipping Box Tops coupons from hundreds of products, shopping online through the Box Tops Marketplace® and Reading Room, and purchasing items from My Class Essentials™ registries. We love video games. My son’s favorite games are the music games. He has just about every music game out there. If a new version of Guitar Hero comes out he’s got to have it. He’s really quite amazing at it. He only plays on expert and generally scores 98% or better. If we go to a retailer like Walmart and he plays he actually draws a crowd. We have all played with him and it’s a lot of fun. The fun thing about music games is that you get to enjoy music you love as well as some that you’re not familiar with. Plus it’s just a lot of fun!

I found a great sale on Band Hero, a music game that I don’t think he has. (I don’t want him to know that I want to know so I’ll have to sneak into his room later and check.)  Band Hero is very much like the Guitar Hero games except it has a little wider variety in songs, they aren’t all rock.
