Exergen TemporalScanner Infrared Thermometer

ABOUT THE EXERGEN TEMPORALSCANNER

The Evergen TemporalScanner infrared thermometer uses the same technology that has become the method of choice for premier hospitals around the country. Gentle as a healing hand against a child’s face, the Exergen TemporalScanner gauges body temperature in two seconds by capturing the naturally emitted heat from skin over the temporal artery. Research proves this method amongst the most accurate ways to test for fever in all ages. This thermometer is also tested 6 times for accuracy during manufacturing and comes with a one year warranty.

MY THOUGHTS

The idea of this thermometer sounds wonderful, especially when I think of my sick, cranky baby who is nearly impossible to get a good armpit temperature read from because he’s too squirmy. I have tested this thermometer several times on him, when he was both healthy and feverish. Though the directions are quite simple – press the button, center the thermometer on the forehead, and gently glide it over into the hairline with the button still pressed – it is much easier said than done on a baby. My baby, at least. As soon as he sees the thermometer, he wants to grab it and play with it, so his head moves consistently, making it nearly impossible to get anything close to an accurate reading. Even when he’s healthy, I get all-over-the-place readings because he won’t stay still enough for the thermometer to accurately scan his forehead.

With that being said, the thermometer works wonders on my 8-year-old daughter. She sits still during the reading, of course. I have also tested the thermometer on her when she was both sick and healthy, and have gotten accurate readings both times. Apparently, the all-age appropriateness the Exergen TemporalScanner claims does not hold true for my children, though maybe other less-squirmy babies would have more luck?

Overall, the Exergen TemporalScanner wasn’t any more or less helpful for taking the temperature of my 10-month-old. We stick to the hand-to-forehead method with him. However, for my daughter and the adults of the house, it’s much more convenient to use this thermometer than contaminating oral thermometers with each other’s germs. Who likes to have thermometers in their mouths when they’re nauseous or have a sore throat? I will definitely be sticking to the Exergen TemporalScanner for my household.
