The Story Behind the Book
“The idea for sending Madeline to the White House was my grandfather’s and grew out of his friendship with Jacqueline Kennedy. In a series of letters from late 1961 and early 1962, my grandfather sounded out the First Lady on ideas for the book, which he proposed calling “Madeline visits Caroline,” with text from Mrs. Kennedy herself. MY THOUGHTS
I really enjoyed this story. It began with a young girl nicknamed Candle that lives in the White House and seems lonely. Madeline and her friends come from Paris for a visit, just in time for the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. Madeline befriends Candle and they have a fun and memorable night, just as real girls do on a sleepover. I think it’s great that historical places are included in the book, because it encourages knowledge. I also like the bright watercolor pictures scattered throughout the book. This book would be a great addition to any young girl’s library.

Madeline was definitely one of my favorite childhood books! We’ve still got my old beat-up copy. I also love Madeline’s Rescue! Other favorites were Corduroy, Harry at the Beach, and Bread and Jam for Frances. I still love all thes books and so enjoy sharing them with our children and their little buddies.
