I recently read an article about commonly overlooked safety traps in the home that put children at risk. The article by Melissa Kay cited a statistic provided by Safe Kids USA, a non-profit organization, which stated that more than 2,000 children under the age of 14 die as a result of a home injury each year in the U.S. And here’s a scary fact you might not have been aware of. The number one overlooked risk in the home are cords from window treatments.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, one child a month between the ages of 7 months and 10 years dies from strangulation or is severely injured by near strangulation from the loose strings or cords on window blinds and shades. A window covering advertised as cord-less does not mean that it is truly cord-free.

Kenney Manufacturing has a new product on the market that addresses this problem – Truly CordFree Roman Shades.

ABOUT KENNEY TRULY CORDFREE ROMAN SHADES

The new Truly CordFree™ roman shades from Kenney are designed with several innovative features that make them attractive for parents, grandparents, allergy sufferers and those concerned with heating and cooling costs. The new Truly CordFree Roman Shades use a twist wand to raise and lower the shade and inner mechanisms to eliminate all strings and cords.

MY THOUGHTS

I received two pair of Kenney’s Truly CordFree Roman Shades. We installed the first pair (khaki) in my youngest son’s room and the second pair (chocolate) in my bedroom. The shades were easy to put up and can be installed in one of three ways – inside mount, outside mount or hybrid mount. We went with a hybrid mount in both rooms because it worked best for our situation.

The shades are super easy to use. To raise and lower the shades all you need to do is twist the wand slowly. In the past we’ve had binds with cords and the cords got tangled and knotted. We’ve also had blinds with wands and the wands always seemed to flop around a bit. I really like the way the wand is kept in place after installation.

In case you’re wondering how the shades work without a cord, here’s how.

Kenney Cord-Free Shades

The shades consist of removable panels attached with clips. The great thing about this is that they’re easy to adjust, and that they’re easily washable.

Kenney’s Truly CordFree Roman Shades may be purchased in select stores nationwide and are available in light filtering, insulated, and thermal blackout fabrics as well as light filtering bamboo.

Kenney Cord-Free Roman Shades Colors

The chocolate shades in our bedroom are terrific at blocking out sunlight, totally amazing! No light gets in there, it’s great! The khaki in my son’s room are lighter in color and block a bit less sunlight, which is why we selected that color as we didn’t want his room to be super dark. The only suggestion I have for improvement is to offer more colors – a few basics like a blue, a green and a pink would make it easier to incorporate these into existing decor.

I am looking at these shades but I have a weird dimenison 321/2 inch window measured inside. The only shade large enough would be 35 — would this work for a hybrid mount. Does anyone know?? Please help as I have a 2 year old that I need to put shades in her room. Thanks

The site mentions a hybrid mount. If you’re unsure I’d ask them through their site, I’m sure they could clarify for certain. Good luck!

Not sure if I like the little wand thing or not. It would be ideal though for parents who have small kids. The shades themselves are nice.
