Today’s episode was the Summer Diet Show, a special edition focusing on weight and diets.

Joy -what’s with the all black, all of the time? Today’s outfit was not flattering at all, it reminded me of upholstery. Whoopi’s shirt was a bit more fitted but still loose. Elisabeth looked great in black and red shirt with jeans. Sherri was in another blue that looked like one she wore a few days ago.

Contestants from The Biggest Loser were on. Helen Philips was the oldest contestant to ever win The Biggest Loser, and Michael Ventrella was the heaviest contestant ever on. They looked great. Helen denied rumors that show contestants go to extremes to lose the weight, stating contestants are tested weekly and that every moment is under camera scrutiny.

Ashton and Demi doing the Master Cleanse Diet as a couple. Elisabeth didn’t think two parents should cleanse at the same time. I don’t know about that, maybe they were doing it for support. Whoopi and Elisabeth are currently doing a cleanse. Apparently cleansing diets are all the rage right now. I’ve never done a cleanse. In all of the diets I tried to lose weight I’d hoped to lose weight permanently. I can’t see going to all of the trouble of some of these diets if the weight won’t come off permanently. If you’ve done a cleansing diet I’d love to know why you did it and if the weight stayed off.

Keri Glassman from Women’s health magazine was on and discussed cleansing – what it is and what it’s supposed to be used for. She said that most people do a cleanse to lose weight fast, rather than the original intent of detoxing your body, and that the weight doesn’t typically stay off. She showed a number of the popular cleanses being done today including Iso Cleanse (900 calories, $150 per day), Blueprint Cleanse (1000-1200 calories, $65-$85 per day), Master Cleanse (Sherri did this one – about 600 calories, no price given), Organic Avenue (no calories or price stated). It was very interesting to see and hear about the different things people are drinking with the hopes of losing weight and/or cleansing their body.

Next up was the Liber family, three members of whom had Lap Band surgery together – the mother and two children. Their doctor, Dr Strain, did a nice job explaining it but my Dr Hottie does a much better job. The family didn’t really seem to say much to me. I think they could have had much better guests speak about Lap Band (like me, cough cough). I’m guessing they had them on because they chose to do it together.

FYI – For those of you that know I had Lap Band and are wondering how I’m dong, check in tomorrow.

Next up were some popular exercise videos. The first was The Wave. It was great watching Sherri get on the board and do the wave. After that it was Jillian Michaels Yoga. Sherri tried, I really think she did. It was hysterical watching her hand on Jessie Pavelka, the handsome trainer that was demonstrating the moves. The last was the Brazil Butt Lift. I was just about crying when she asked him to touch her butt to make sure she was doing it right. Here’s some video from this segment. Check it out, it’s so funny!

“Cleanses’ are a total misnomer. They do not “cleanse” anything, and never did. that is not how the body works. Calling these liquid diets is just a cover – it’s just another extreme way to diet. $150 /day for a liquid diet? Really? It’s a lot cheaper to just eat right.

What cleanses your body are: your liver, kidneys, spleen, and lungs. All you need to do to help your system clean itself are: stay hydrated and breathe. that’s it. And if you can throw some exercise in there, always good.

The average person who eats right will still put on 1 pound a year from age 30 on, since the body slows down at that rate. So to keep weight off, you either need to eat less, exercise more, or both.

There’s no way around it. Drastic measures like liquid fasting are just trying to avoid the facts.

I’m 51, and I’m in better shape than I was in high school. I don’t know what I weigh, since I refuse to own a scale – scale just feed the weight obsession. I lerned that in college, watchign all the weight-obsessed girls who ate salad and ice crem, and talked incessantly about their weight!

I just make small choices that add up (over a long time) to being in shape. It’s not genetics – it’s practice, perseverance, and patience.

    Peace.
