My 11 year old has Alopecia Areata – male pattern baldness. His hair doesn’t grow at all in some spots and falls out in others. We stopped taking him to get his hair done years ago. We were having to take him often enough that we felt like we were just throwing money away, since he needs only a buzz cut. We started doing it ourselves at home with an old clipper we had. He adjusted fine to us buzzing his hair, something that we do about once a month now. My husband started buzzing his hair years ago, when he started painting for a living. It was easier to keep his hair clean by keeping his hair short. Now that he’s looking for work he wants to look clean cut but doesn’t really want to appear extreme. The clipper we’ve been using didn’t have any blades that allowed for a longer cut. We try to be careful with money, as we’re a one income family, which means we can’t afford trips to a salon for him. When I learned of the Wahl Color Pro Haircutting Kit I felt this might be the ideal solution for a family like ours.

We received a Wahl Color Pro Color Coded Haircutting Kit for this review. The first thing that we liked about it is that everything comes in a case that you can use for storage.
The haircutter itself is very easy to use. Once you decide what length you want the hair to be, attach the color comb. We like the molded and soft rubbery grip a lot, it makes it a lot more comfortable to hold than our previous cutter. The Color Pro is surprisingly quiet and light. It’s also surprisingly powerful. For something so small and relatively quiet we didn’t expect it to be as quiet as it is. The cutter has an electromagnetic motor that can generate up to 7,200 blade strokes per minute – the highest of any motor of its type.
One of my favorite features is the adjustable taper lever, which allows you to “fine tune” the height of the cut you’re making. My other favorite feature is the ear combs. We’d not had those before and we like them a lot. They make cutting around the ears so much easier.
Changing combs is super easy. We have a hair cutting routine now. RB does his hair and CJ watches. Then we switch the comb and do CJ’s hair. This works out well because CJ is reminded that cutting is quick and easy and doesn’t hurt.
The Wahl Color Pro would make a great gift for anyone, as well as a great item to pick up for your own family. After all, a family of four could save an estimated $500 annually when three or more family members cut their hair at home.
The Wahl Color Pro is available for purchase at Walmart and other stores, as well as online. It retails for approximately $34.95.
The product featured was provided free of cost to me for the sole purpose of product testing, review or inclusion in the gift guide.
