The original animated Alice In Wonderland is one of my most favorite Disney animated movies ever. I couldn’t wait for the new Alice In Wonderland to come to DVD, which happened last week.
For those of you expecting a remake, you won’t get one. Alice In Wonderland picks up thirteen years from where the original animated Alice In Wonderland left off. Point of interest, this one is not animated. Alice is now becoming an adult. Her father has died and she’s left to ponder if she’s going mad, as she’s had recurring dreams about characters from Wonderland since she was a child. At a party, where young Hamish intends to propose, Alice is sure she’s seeing a rabbit with a watch. As Hamish proposes and waits for his answer, Alice hesitates and rushes off to see if the rabbit is real. And down the rabbit hold she goes.
When she lands at the bottom of the rabbit hole she finds herself in Underland. Once again we watch Alice go through a search for a way out of a room, complete with shrinking and growing. When she gets out of the building we saw Underland looks nothing like Wonderland. Underland is full of unique characters but is darker and somehow lonelier. Apparently the Red Queen’s rule has not been kind to land or inhabitants.
It seems that some of the inhabitants of Underland have been searching for Alice so that she can slay the Jabberwocky, which will in turn remove the Red Queen from power. Did you know that the Red Queen has a sister, the White Queen? I don’t remember her from the first but she’s in this one. She’s got a smaller head than her sister and a different outlook on things. Johnny Depp is great as The Mad Hatter, he does such a great job with the role. The smoking caterpillar has a name this time, Absolem. As before my favorite Cheshire Cat pops in and out but he seems to have more purr-sonality this time around, even if he isn’t pink and purple. Will Alice kill the Jabberwocky? Will the Red Queen be overthrown? Who will dance the Futterwacken? Will Alice marry Hamish? You’ll have to watch the movie to find out the answers to these questions. I can tell you that towards the ends of the movie Alice promises “I’ll be back before you know it”. I’m very curious to see if a follow-up to this Alice is made.

I was freaked out with the first Tim Burton movie I experienced (Nightmare Before Christmas) and I still am freaked by his movies, this one is no exception. I’ve only seen part of it so maybe I have no room to talk but I can’t say I enjoy Johnny Depp or any other remade un-animated character.
However I am intrigued by the fact that they made this movie not an exact remake but instead a continuation of the story. Maybe I will try to sit down and watch it again now that I know it will be different than I remembered the first one to be.
I haven’t seen this one yet, but can’t wait! I love Johnny Depp and your review makes it sound just like what I expect!
We’ve been wondering if this was worth watching. Thank you for the review.
I thought this movie was horrible it was too dark & scary looking to me. I think they messed up a classic.
I had no idea it wasnt a remake. that’s why i didnt see it in the first place.
At our House we watch this movie at least once a week. The kids never get tired of it.
I loved this movie! Fully of great color! Love how it extended on the story.
This sounds like a unique and eye-catching film!
I love this movie, but then I am a huge Burton and Depp fan. Of course my step daughter wants to see it but I am afraid to let her since she got scared during Harry Potter.
