I find cookbooks interesting. Where else can you find such a wealth of knowledge and ideas all on one topic – food? I received a copy of The Good Home Cookbook by Richard Perry for this review.
From the publisher – “Riding a wave of nostalgia for simpler days, more and more Americans are returning to dinnertime rituals as a way to reconnect with their families, and comfort foods as a satisfying alternative to haute cuisine. These made-from-scratch dishes come back to life when you open the pages of The Good Home Cookbook.
In this highly ambitious effort, Richard Perry led his team to identify recipes that formed the foundation of American cuisine, then recruited hundreds of home cooks from all 50 states to test and retest the recipes before they were accepted for inclusion. The result is a timeless compendium of more than 1,000 familiar favorites and beloved classics, a collection that no home should be without.
Simple and user-friendly, the cookbook features easy-to-follow instructions, vintage-style illustrations, menu planning ideas, and more. The Good Home Cookbook is an instant classic and a collector’s item for culinary enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels.”
The Good Home Cookbook is 512 pages and splits recipes up into fifteen chapters including
- Breakfast
- Lunch
- Appetizers
- Salads
- Soups
- Fish and Shellfish
- Poultry
- Meat
- Grilling
- Pasta and Rice
- Vegetables
- Breads and Toppings
- Pies Cakes and Cookies
- Other Desserts and Sweets
- Drinks
With the economy in the toilet more and more people are eating at home. I liked this book as soon as I opened it. There’s actually a section entitled “How To Use This Book”, ideal for those who are inexperienced with cooking. This cookbook contains not only recipes but also instructions and tips, explanations of cooking terms, utensils and appliances every kitchen should have, descriptions of things like types of drink glasses and pots and pans, menu planning ideas and ideas for holiday menus. There’s even a measurement conversion chart on the last page. A word of warning, this cookbook does not contain pictures. No worries, the wording is very clear and easy to understand.
I’m sure you’ve seen cookbooks that I have, the ones with 25-50 recipes that sell for $10-$20. I won’t buy them. For me to actually buy a cookbook I need for it to contain lots of easy to follow real food recipes and not cost an arm and a leg. Which is why I love that this cookbook has more than 1,000 recipes and sells for under $30. I love the wide variety of recipes in this cookbook, but what I like more is that they’re all regular dishes. I hate when I want to try making a dish and it’s got things I’ve never heard of in it. The recipes all call for ordinary ingredients, you know the stuff in your cabinet, in your neighbor’s cabinet or on your average grocery store shelf. No fancy schmancy stuff here – just down to earth real food, or good eats as my Grandma would have said.
I think this cookbook would be a great addition to any kitchen. It would also make a terrific housewarming, engagement or going out on your own gift. I’m thrilled to have been able to add it to my kitchen bookshelf.
