Knots Landing Season 2

KNOTS LANDING SEASON 2 DVD - OWN IT ON DVD - AVAILABLE MAY 5, 2009

Who remembers watching prime time drama in the 80s? You know what I’m talking about, night time soaps. I watched a couple of them, one of my favorites being Knots Landing. RB and I watched Knots together in the later years. I always enjoyed the series but had missed a good number of the early episodes. Earlier this week, while Verizon held the internet captive in my area for almost three days, I got comfy on the couch and checked out Knots Landing Season 2 on DVD.

The Season 2 synopsis: “Love thy neighbor. Words to live by for Sid’s sexy sister Abby Cunningham - especially with the male neighbors in her new hometown, Knots Landing. Maybe it’s Abby’s influence, but bed-hopping becomes the latest cul-de-sac sport. Who cheats? It’s simpler to list who doesn’t in this sizzling 4-Disc Season 2 Set of the long-running hit series. And there’s a lot more excitement: J.R. and Bobby Ewing swap Texas drilling for California dreaming and visit, crooks muscle in on Gary, a hitchhiker accuses Sid of rape, armed robbers hold the cul-de-sac women hostage… and the season ends with a genuine cliffhanger: Sid careening toward a seaside cliff after someone tampers with his car!

Doesn’t that sound interesting? Obviously I can’t summarize eighteen hours of television in one article. Let me tell you a little background info and some of the things I liked about the series. Knots Landing first aired in December 1979 and after fourteen seasons ended in 1993. The show typically revolved around couples that all lived on the same street. In Season 2 the main characters included Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford) and his wife Valene (Joan Van Ark), whose characters originated on the show Dallas - Gary was JR’s younger brother. Their neighbors consisted of couples including the Fairgates - Karen (Michele Lee) and Sid (Don Murray), the Averys - Richard (John Pleshette) and Laura (Constance McCashin), and the Wards - Kenny (James Houghton) and Ginger (Kim Lankford). Sid’s sister Abby Cunningham (Donna Mills) also moved onto the street. There were a number of times during the run of the show that Dallas characters appeared in Knots episodes. Yes, they include JR and Bobby Ewing!

Here’s a clip of Gary.

The characters were never written as upper class rich people and viewers saw them doing regular things that you and I do like housework, driving the kids and even (wait for it) working. The characters I liked best were Karen and Sid. The character I liked the least was Abby. (Can you say homewrecker?) Almost every episode featured behavior that became a soap staple - lying, cheating, stealing and breaking up. My favorite episodes are Squeezeplay (for the ending), Hitchhike (for the long storyline) and Step One (for the mother/daughter relationship problem storyline).

The episodes looked and sounded just as I remember seeing them on television when they first aired. If you’re looking for something new to watch and you’re not a big fan of reality shows you might find this series right up your alley. If you enjoyed this series twenty nine years ago then grab it and enjoy a trip down memory lane.

When I was first married, about 22 years ago, we had “Knots Landing” Parties. My sister, brothers and friends would all come over and pile into our little tv room to watch Knots Landing. What a great show!
