Contemplating preserving family pictures

My parents love to take pictures. They have always taken a lot of them. My Mom has a hope chest filled with nothing but loose pictures. Of course as time goes by and pictures age the quality decreases and the color fades. I’ve always thought it would be neat if we could get all of those photos into digital form. But the idea of scanning a picture at a time on a flatbed scanner and then cropping and editing it is a giant pain in the butt. Not to mention the amout of time it would take. While checking out the Buy.com sale page I found something neat that might be a possible solution.

Hammacher Schlemmer makes this Digital Photograph Converter. The unit plugs into the USB port of your PC. It will convert pictures sized 3 1/2″ x 5″, 4″ x 6″, and 5″ x 7″. Users put the photo they want to convert into a tray and press a button. Using the same type of sensor found in digital cameras, the converter promises accurate images through the use of up to 1,800 dpi resolution, automatic exposure control and color balance. Regularly retailing for $199.99, Buy.com has this Photograph Converter on sale for $79.99. That’s a savings of 60%! It also qualifies for free shipping.

I’ve never seen a product like this before so I don’t know a lot about how well they work. I’m going to check out the review for this item. This looks like it would be an idea gift for anyone who enjoys digital photography and has got a lot of old pictures.

Both my brother and my father saw this post and asked me about it. How funny!
None of hers are organized so she’d have her work cut out for her.
    Thanks.

My husband has been going through all of his mom’s pictures. He has organized them and now she is putting names with them. She is having a ball doing it. It was too overwhelming before he organized them.
