THE ABC’S OF BACK-TO-SCHOOL “BASICS” AT T.J. MAXX

FRAMINGHAM, MA (Fall 2009) – This year, value is on every parent’s mind as they think about back-to-school shopping. Parents can update their children’s wardrobes with trendy basics that will stretch throughout the year, and not break the bank! Hoodies, jeans, graphic tees and even backpacks that feature the trends are the must-have “basics” for students across the country. And this back to school season while customers are shopping for the basics for their children at T.J. Maxx, they can help children in need in the United States as well simply by purchasing a limited edition reusable shopping bag. The bags are designed with Save the Children original children’s artwork, and for each bag purchased, T.J. Maxx will donate one basic item such as; socks, underwear and backpacks to Save the Children’s U.S. Programs, up to 25,000 items.

“With a focus on updating the basics for their child at an off-price retailer like T.J. Maxx, parents are able to give their children the trends they crave in pieces that will last all year long,” said T.J. Maxx Style expert, Sonya Cosentini. “We are also excited that this year, we are able to provide those same back to school essentials to children in need right here in the U.S. through our partnership with Save the Children.”

Skip the mall and department stores for back-to-school shopping and head to T.J. Maxx first where budgets will stretch much further. You’ll find the same on-trend, in-season and first quality merchandise as department and specialty stores, but for much less. In fact, if you compare price tags, you’ll see that T.J.Maxx prices are up to 60% less for the same items!

The best thing about the “basics” or must-haves this season, is they can be combined to create multiple looks, or worn as separates to update a child’s current wardrobe. There are five must-have “basics” that every student should stock their closet with to be ready to walk the hallways in this year:

Denim
From elementary through high school, denim is a staple in every student’s wardrobe. This year, there are many different styles, colors and washes to choose from. Girls can look for colored skinny leg jeans with sparkly belts and crimping, while boys will request deconstructed worn styles with slight tearing and back pocket detail. The hottest trend this school year for girls – pairing denim with a belted, buffalo plaid tunic or graphic tee.

T-Shirts
Not-so-basic tees are customized this year. Little girls express themselves with peace signs, butterflies and hearts on sublimation and watercolor patterns. Boys will don a ‘rocker’ look with skulls and vintage rock band logos as they hit the books. Worn over jeans, leggings, or shorts, t-shirts are a great way to express their individual style, and are key layering pieces as the colder months approach. Girls will also spice up a tee with a tie-dye or printed scarf.

Athletic Wear
From the sports field to the classroom, athletic wear is on the rise. Athletic pants, zip up jackets and logo t-shirts are top requests from boys. Girls looks are feminine in colorful embellished fleece and French terry sets for the ultimate in comfort and style for back to school.

Hoodies
Hooded sweatshirts are not just for keeping warm anymore – they are a basic fashion statement. This year, hoodies come in various colors and styles – complete with logos, embellishments, and even athletic and beach-y looks. Girls can add a zip-up hoodie over a long graphic tee and leggings to complete the look.

Backpacks
A staple back-to-school accessory, backpacks are the must-have for every student. Styles range from the traditional backpack to the messenger style bag. For the little ones, popular styles will feature favorite characters from Cars and Dora the Explorer to princesses and super heroes. And, once the backpack has been picked out, T.J. Maxx has all of the necessary school supplies to fill it. Folders calendars, pencil sets and rulers, T.J. Maxx is your one-stop shop for a successful school year!

And More…
• Beyond the basics, little girls can look for a variety of dresses in buffalo plaids and floral patterns.
• Flannel legging sets with bows, patterns and sparkle will warm her up as the weather gets colder.
