Axelrod Low Fat No Salt Cottage Cheese review

I was allowed to start introducing certain foods into the post surgical diet this week. Cottage cheese is one of them. Cottage cheese is an excellent source of protein and a good source of calcium. Plus it’s pretty soft. I’ve always liked cottage cheese so buying it is nothing new for me. Until now. Since the surgery I’ve been trying to be sure what little foods I have are on my nutritionist’s diet and are as low in fat, sugar and salt as possible. It’s an entirely new shopping experience for me, exposing me to different brands, different foods and different tastes.

Axelrod is a popular brand name of dairy products in our area (New Jersey – New York). I decided to try the Axelrod Lowfat No Salt Cottage Cheese. Now I don’t add salt to my cottage cheese, so when I first tasted this I was surprised to find it more bitter than I expected. I know it’s the salt that made the taste different rather than the fat because I tried a spoonful with a tiny bit of salt and the taste was something mouch closer to what I’m used to.  I can’t say that it tastes bad, it just tastes different than I’m used to and takes some getting used to. I can eat it plain but I’m thinking about mixing it with some applesauce to see what that does for it. The curds are small and soft and the cottage cheese itself is creamy. It’s hard to describe the level of moisture, that part is just right – it’s not too dry or too wet.

A single 16 ounce container of Axelrod Lowfat No Salt Cottage Cheese contains 4 half cup servings. Each serving has 100 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 15 grams of protein. The first ingredient is cultured pasteurized skim milk. It does contain modified food starch so I’m fairly sure it isn’t gluten free.

Axelrod Cottage Cheese products are usually about $2.99 in the grocery stores in my area. I myself only buy them when they’re on sale for about $1.49, which is approximately once a month.

I am a big fan of cottage cheese to begin with, but once I have tried Axelrod brand, I have found no better! The pineapple has got to be my favorite, it has just the right amount of fruit and the flavor is something you don’t forget, I actually crave this stuff. So if you like cottage cheese and have not tried this brand, I recommend you do!!!
