Why I dislike big box salespeople

When I got into computer sales it was to sell Apple products. We spent weeks in training. One of the fun things we used to do was go to big box stores and ask the computer salespeople questions, because we quickly found out they frequently didn’t know the answers and would often make them up or just try and sell you something else.

I do not like high pressure sales. I want to be left alone when I walk into a store. The most I will accept is a polite “may I help you” sort of question, and if I say no I want it to end there. I don’t need someone who may know even less than me assuming that I don’t know enough to know what I want. I don’t want a salesperson bugging me to buy something. I do not want to be oversold, which it seems many salespeople are taught is acceptable. I want to be left alone until I don’t want to be left alone or until I pay.

Today I took my older son out for a couple of hours and we found ourselves in Circuit City. I was looking at laptop cases and wireless mice for the new Macbook Pro I recently got and my son was looking at everything video game related. The salesperson (a young kid) in Circuit City asked if he could help me, I politely said no thanks. He kept following us trying to get us to have a conversation so he could do his thing. Unfortunately I paused at the wrong moment and opened the door. I was talking to my son about what I needed for the laptop and the kid jumped in and said I surely must need more computer memory. I assured him that the 2gb I had was more than enough for my needs and grabbed my son and headed for the door before he made another run at us. Thankfully I looked at what I wanted to and will now price and buy it online.
