Practice is when?

TJ’s basketball season started this week. We got a voicemail message last Tuesday that his first practice was a last Wednesday at 8:30 pm. Yes, 8:30 pm on a school night. I was not happy. We went to the school mentioned in the message to discover that was not where the team was practicing. I finally got a chance to speak with the coach over the weekend and he said that many of our practices and games are at 8:30. I asked why and he said it’s because the kids were older. These kids are in seventh grade. I asked him if he realized that this meant our kids wouldn’t go to bed until between 10-11 pm on school nights and he said he did. I don’t think that’s right and I am going to say something to the Recreation department. I’m glad TJ gets a chance to play but I’d say that hour was too late on a school night for any child under 15. I don’t think it should start any later than 7:30-8 pm. I wouldn’t mind if it was a once in a while thing but a couple of times a week for a three months is too much. So let’s hear it. Am I wrong? How late is too late to participate in a recurring activity like basketball on a school night?

I agree. Practice should start at 7pm at the very latest. An hour practice and then home.

Older than what? They’re still kids, they’re still in school, and they still need their sleep! My daughter plays softball on Wed. nights and it’s typically a double header, first game at 6:30, 2nd game at 8. We get home about 10. Thank goodness tonight is the last night. It’s only been once a week, but it affects homework, dinner and sleep.
