Open your heart and your home 4 the holidays

The holiday season is approaching quickly with Christmas just over two months away. If you’ve been thinking about getting a pet, there’s no better time than this holiday season. Even when times aren’t tough financially, I’m a great believer in pet adoption. Right now there are more than 8 million homeless pets in the US and as many as half of them face being put to death because shelters are just too crowded.
At ten years old, Iams Home 4 The Holidays is one of the world’s most successful pet adoption programs. Since the program started in 1999 it has placed more than 2 million pets into happy homes. The program has helped place many different kinds of animals including more than 1,047,000 dogs, 962,000 cats, and 66,000 other animals including rabbirs, reptiles, birds and more. Last year alone almost 500,000 families chose to adopt through the program. The program was founded by the Helen Woodward Animal Center and started out with 14 participating shelters in San Diego county. The program has grown tremendously, with almost 3,000 shelters in 15 countries participating.
This holiday season the Iams Home 4 The Holidays program has a goal to place 1 million animals between 10/01/08 and 01/05/09. It’s a big number that’s sure to be a challenge but you can help. Before you go buy that pedigreed puppy or dog, check the shelters. More than a quarter of the dogs in shelters are purebreds. Open your heart and home to a homeless pet this holiday season. Every home that adopts a kitten, cat, puppy or dog will receive an Iams Adoption Starter Kit containing food, samples, coupons, tips and information on pet care, behavior, training and nutrition.
If you’re unable to adopt there are still other ways that you can provide much needed help. One important way is by increasing awareness about the homeless pets in North America. Actress Felicity Huffman has teamed up with Iams Home 4 The Holidays for this purpose. Along with adopting an animal and/or spreading the word, other ways you can help are by donating good and monies, as well as by volunteering your time.
