Mardi Gras Magic - a special prom

If you read this blog regularly you may recall I try to find a feel good news story each week, so that I can Share Some Good Stuff. This week I want to share a story of something good that happened right here in my own town. It’s a story of something so good it made the newspaper. It’s the story of a prom.

The prom I’m referring to is a special prom, or more specifically, a prom for special education students. I’m proud to say it takes place here in New Jersey, right in the town I live in.  This year marked the third anniversary of the event and had the theme Mardi Gras Magic. The 2008 prom, a join effort between the Pals Club and Rotary Interact, had about 60 special education students in attendance along with students from the two sponsoring groups. Parents view the event as a chance for their children to create memories and share in some of the high school experiences that so many others have and cherish. Many parents go all out for this prom, just as many parents do for other children. The occasion helps the special needs students because it helps them interact with their peers. I am so glad these students were able to have this opportunity, and I hope they all had fun and made some new memories.

Rotary Interact is a community service group affiliated with The Rotary Club. The Pals Club pairs average students with special ed students in order to promote friendship, relationships, understanding and acceptance. I think it’s awesome that there’s a club of average young people that are interested in forming relationships with the special ed students. What a great way to build character and set a great example for others. I can’t think of anything more that I’d hope or want to see from a club of young people. Kudos to the students from both of the sponsoring groups.
