Increasing autism awareness worldwide

WorldAutismAwarenessDayLogo Are you aware of what yesterday was? If not, check out this great news. Yesterday was the first World Autism Awareness Day. This day was acknowledged locally and local activities even got some press coverage which I thought was great. The non-profit Autism Speaks estimates that 1 out of 94 children in New Jersey have a type of autism. The town I live in has been studied due to its higher than average prevalence of autism. The theme at the Primary Learning Center here in my town yesterday was to teach kids that everyone is an individual and different. I think it’s great that these young students are receiving education not only about their fellow students, but also themselves. I am a great believer in education and awareness when it comes to disabilities for many reasons, so I couldn’t be happier that people all over the world are trying to work together for the same cause. If you’d like to learn a little more about autism an excellent resource is Autism Speaks. You can also visit the World Autism Awareness Day website for more info.

I’m going to send this to my blogging pal Skeet in Hawaii, just in case she’s in the mood for people to Share Some Good Stuff this week.
