I forgot I didn’t like you

I took my son to see an ENT again today. The audiologist had told me to take my son to the ENT again so he could look into what might be causing the mixed hearing loss in one of his ears, and she told me they’d probably want to do a CT. I brought the results from his ABR with me, so he could see them for himself and understand why the audiologist wanted us to see an ENT again. Wouldn’t you know when the doctor entered the room I remembered we’d seen him once before and I wasn’t crazy about him? It figures. Anyway.

We discussed my son’s medical history and conditions and I explained why we were there and told him he was free to copy the report and he performed his examination. After looking in my son’s ears he said he didn’t see any problems with the middle ear and maybe I should see an audiologist and get a hearing aid evaluation. I looked at him and my mouth might have hit the floor for a moment. I took a moment to choose my words and then reminded him that if he looked at the report he’d see that my son had already had a hearing aid eval and the ear molds were being made as we spoke, and that we were sent there to  see if my son needed a CT. He looked surprised that I’d said anything and gave me the prescription for the CT and told us to come back in six months. This time I’ll remember which doctor it is we don’t want to see when I’m scheduling.

Unfortunately, this is how things are with doctors way too often. We have to be advocates for ourselves and especially for our children. I’m sorry to read about your son’s hearing loss. I hope that you can learn some answers through testing.

You may even want to contact a support group or find some info online about hearing loss in children. If you need anything, feel free to contact me.

We have doctors in the ER here that I ask for someone else when they are on duty. They are arrogant, and talk to the ER patients as if they are stupid. I encountered one of them again the other night when I took oldest dd in about her foot. Needless to say I asked for another doctor.

    and off topic….
