Free browser available for autistic children

I want to share some good stuff this week, especially with my pal Skeet. Usually when I find good news it’s from my area but this one is so good it has the potential to effect people almost anywhere. I found this article earlier this month on the USA Today website.

A software engineer named John LeSieur has created a custom internet browser for children. Why do I think that’s great news? Because the browser was created for his grandson Zackary who is autistic. Mr. LeSieur developed the browser because he saw his grandson unable to enjoy the computer and internet without getting frustrated.

The Zac browser is available as a free download on the Zac browser website. The browser simplifies using the computer and connecting to the internet. It will only load free, public, individually selected websites, and blocks out all sites with violence, sex and adult content. The browser allows sites with music, educational games and pictures, and also includes a virtual aquarium.  The site is simple, using large pictures as icons for available activities. All buttons that aren’t absolutely crucial have been disabled, which decreases the number of confusing choices and counterproductive actions a child might need to take. Even right clicking for the mouse has been disabled. The browser optimizes the screen so that no advertisements or distractions appear.

I think it’s terrific that this man wanted to improve his grandson’s daily life and bring more value and enjoyment to the use of the computer. I’ll bet there’s lots of people out there that have a use for this browser. It’s awesome that this man has made it available to anyone that needs it, for free. Kudos Mr. Lesieur!
