Don’t talk to strangers

Why is it people don’t think? We went out to Philadelphia today for a hearing aid check. On the way home we made a quick stop in the Walmart. (It was quick, honest!) We’re going down the main aisle and I stop to look at sunglasses. I should have been prepared for what came next, but in some ways I’m never prepared.

“Wow, that’s some haircut!”

I think to my self “wow, that’s some lack of intelligence and tact you got there lady” but instead bite my tongue.

“It’s not a haircut. It’s alopecia, a form of pattern baldness. It doesn’t grow in certain areas of his scalp.”

“That’s some design. How’d you get it cut like that?”

“You must not have heard me. It’s not a haircut.”

I see her opening her mouth to say something in response. I decide to do a preemptive strike, because if I hear another ridiculous remark I will start making a scene. As I walk away I am marveling that anyone would actually think that a competent parent would let a child cut their own hair. We childproofed out house long ago. Little children shouldn’t play with scissors. And do I look like an incompetent parent? Do I look like I don’t pay any attention to what my child (or children) are doing?

I should have just ignored her when she started speaking. My Mom always told me not to talk to strangers.
