Brett represents
I have a message that I simply have to share, by way of sharing a story. I’m submitting the story to Skeet’s feel good news series, Share Some Good Stuff, because I was so impressed I want lots of people to know about it. Actually, I want the world to do more than know about it, I’d like the world to truly hear it, understand it and teach it to others.
The tv show So You Think You Can Dance began it’s fourth season last month. It’s a dance reality sort of show, and the contestants are selected from auditions held in different parts of the US. Last week at the auditions held in Salt Lake City, Utah there was one special young man went to the auditions with a goal. What was it? As he simply stated, “to represent”. Who or what did he want to represent? Everyone out there with a disability.
The young man of which I speak is Brett Banford. Brett loves to dance and wanted the world to know that those that have disabilities can be capable and talented and can have a full life. Why did this make news this week? Because Brett has Down Syndrome. Brett is a global messenger for the Special Olympics. Brett danced really well, hip hop style. He didn’t make it to the next round but he has every right to be very proud. Brett’s message to everyone after he completed his audition dance was “I’m here to prove to people that people with disabilities can actually have a normal life and live it.” The judges were gracious and honest without being patronizing.
Of course I was in tears before the video ended. I loved Brett’s attitude more than his dancing, which I thought was pretty good. I totally agree with the judge’s statement that Brett is an inspiration for everyone. I think it is terrific that he is so comfortable with himself that he advocates for others.
Way to go Brett! You did a terrific job! And I think you can dance! You all can judge for yourself. Enjoy!
