Why would a realtor do this?

The family that used to live next door to us sold their house and moved over a year ago. Today as I was driving down the street, I saw a sign on another house that made me think of my old neighbor Elle. She was a married mother of two that waitressed at night. A year or two before they moved she got her real estate license, and kept on waitressing at night. What I wondered today was, when they listed their house for sale why didn’t she sell it herself rather than using another realtor. Anyone in real estate out there have any thoughts?
