What’s the reasoning behind this lie?

I have single friends. I have married friends. Then there’s the couple I know that has been together a number of years and has children that is not married. For the record, I do believe in living together, if it’s the beginning of a committed relationship and a prelude to marriage. This couple I know always tells people they’re married, even though they aren’t. I can’t understand why they would choose not to marry and then on the same hand lie to people and say they are. If they believe their decision is the correct one they should stand by it proudly, not hide behind a lie. Why would a couple lie about this?
