Looks like we are on the same page here, as I am also thinking about changing to a 3-column theme and get a new header plus 'me' image for that. I've been searching around for a pulldown format of archives (like the blogspot), but couldn't find one at all. Wonder if you have any good recommendation of theme with this pulldown archives that I could study the codes? (I'm not a programmer, have to learn a bit from other existing codes) :) I haven't thought about the horizontal menu - very good suggestion! Point noted on the 'more' tag.
