Predating

My son has decided he is considering dating and would like to go to the movies with a girl after school is out. He calls it a pre-date. What exactly is a pre-date?
Anyway he called her house and said he’d like to go to the movies with her after school’s out, especially because she didn’t get to go to the movies for his birthday party.
