I love to read. It’s a trait I share with my Mom. We enjoy some of the same authors, one of whom is Patricia Cornwell. Recently I was offered the opportunity to check out two DVDs based on books written by Patricia Cornwell – At Risk and The Front.
At Risk introduces Win Garano (Daniel Sunjata), the rising star of the Massachusetts State Police, when D.A. Monique “Money” Lamont (Andie MacDowell) sends him to Tennessee to investigate a cold case that took place more than 20 years before. The calculating Monique things she has found the perfect murder to showcase her new crime initiative and Win has no choice but to follow her lead. With the help of his colleague Sykes, Win follows the evidence as it leads him to a killer in Knoxville, and then all the way back to Boston and a crime that hits much closer to home.
You can purchase At Risk on Amazon.
In the fast-paced sequel to “At Risk,” Monique Lamont (Andie MacDowell) and Win Garano (Daniel Sunjata) reunite to investigate Boston’s most famous criminal. Attempting to generate much-needed publicity for her flagging political aspirations, Monique orders Win to reopen the investigation of the brutal, decades-old murder of a young blind woman named Janie Brolin. Janie’s boyfriend was the main suspect in the original investigation, but Monique has another suspect in mind–the Boston Strangler. Win must work closely with a no-nonsense and combative female detective named “Stump” (Ashley Williams) to unpeel layer upon layer of the 40-year-old crime. Win and Stump’s relationship evolves as they uncover the truth about Janie’s death and track down a psychopath who is leaving their witnesses and colleagues dead in his wake.

In At Risk, Boston DA Lamont (Andie MacDowell) is running for public office and the center of her campaign is a new crime initiative. She brings in State Police Officer Win Garano (Daniel Sunjata) to solve a very old, very cold murder case that happened more than two decades earlier, hoping to prove the need for the expensive forensices lab she’s planning as part of the initiative. Garano doesn’t want to take the case but decides he must after receiving a message that his superstitious grandmother (Diahann Carroll) will be in danger if he does. To solve the case Garano asks a friend, Tennessee Investigator Annabeth Sykes (Annabeth Gish), for help. To work the case thoroughly he must travel to Tennessee, where he investigates and determines who the murderer is. After returning home he realizes there’s a piece of the story that he hadn’t factored in that changes the whole outcome. He must race against time to solve the crime and protect his friend and his grandmother but one doesn’t make it.
In The Front DA Lamont once again brings in Win Garano to solve an old case. This time the old, cold case is a 40 year old murder that took place in Boston. The DA’s prime suspect? The infamous Boston Strangler. This time around Win works with female Detective Stump, who he dislikes. Mysterious things happen to Win that can’t be explained, such as his gun being stolen from his apartment and people associated with the case dying. Once again people that Win cares about are in danger while he rushes to solve the case.
As someone who’s read both of these books, I can tell you that the movies are recognizable as being based on the books but you could easily watch the movies without having read the books and they’d still make sense. Hubby, who is not a reader, watched with me. We enjoyed both of the movies. The movies moved quickly and the storyline flowed nicely. I recommend watching these two movies in order (At Risk and then The Front) so that you understand the characters and the story better.
TWO winners will each receive a copy of the At Risk and The Front DVDs.
